Malate is located immediately south of Ermita, near the center of Manila. This is a highly commercialized area, hotels in Malate some of the most comprehensive in the Philippines. Visitors based in this area are within close reach of the historic sites of Intramuros, but they also enjoy a modern commercial scene with a great selection of restaurants and bars.
There are not as many outright sightseeing attractions here as in Ermita / Intramuros. The Manila Zoo is one of the biggest attractions in the neighborhood, and it appeals mostly to visiting Filipinos. Another major site is Malate Church on Remedios Street. It was originally built in the 16th century and houses Our Lady of Remedies, an image of the Virgin Mary that is said to help women through difficult pregnancies.
Malate has an exciting selection of bars and late-night establishments. These include dance clubs and sports bars near Manila Bay and more bohemian hangouts toward the interior. Accommodation in Malate includes some of the newest hotels in Manila, built in the last decade to cater for growing international interest. The finest five-star hotels are close to the northern boundary with Ermita and play host to one of the most upmarket nightlife districts in Manila.
