    Friendly owner :)”

We stayed here for 1 night before leaving Gili Trawangan. The owner is really nice. When we just arrived at this place, he asked us what time we want to have our breakfast the next day. He always tried to help us when we needed his help. One problem was that we could hear the noise from outside. Other than this, everything was okay! Breakfast was very nice :) There are everything you need in the room.

    Staff, free bikes and location

This was an amazing stay. We had so much fun staying here with Opa Mek. He really has a good heart and wants to be there for his guests. He offers free bikes to get around Trawangan and he makes lovely breakfast for you. Oh dear, this was just something you have to experience

Left Early, Wouldn't Stay Again. ”

We left Gili T for a few reasons which had nothing to do with the homestay so I'll address these first for anyone thinking about visiting. If you're after the beautiful beaches you see in the photos, don't bother. They're all incredibly photoshopped, very corally and rough sand and barely anywhere to perch for the day when you do want to go to the beach. Nothing like what you see online. Another is the extortionate price of food (and not worth it in our opinion). We always eat from the cheap eats suggestions on TripAdvisor and trust me, it was far from cheap anywhere. Onto the homestay. We booked this based on the incredible reviews it got. Honestly, I was so disappointed! The owner, who was supposed to be the most helpful guy barely said two words during our stay. We were greeted with 'Amy, Number 4' and that is all that was said until we left (two days early). The room was ridden with frogs, mosquitoes and i even found a cockroch one night. The air conditioning was terrible and the shower lacked any type of power, even by South East Asia standards. Overall, really disappointed and definitely wouldn't stay again.

Very nice Homestay. Family very friendly. Nice relaxing environment. Easy walking distance to bars and restaurants but far away enough you can’t hear it. Breakfast was different everyday and served on your own terrace. Would stay again!

    Lovely stay”

The homestay is a short walk from the main strip and harbour of Gili T. As a result it doesn't have the sounds of the tourists / late night party goers. However it is surrounded by locals and the noises of animals and the call to prayer. We enjoyed it's location. The family are friendly and make tasty breakfast. The room is clean and basic. But with nice touches such as the motion sensor bathroom light. The WiFi is fast and the TV has a larger than average selection of western TV channels. All in all, a lovely stay

Clean, very friendly owners with fast wifi and good aircon. Breakfast was filling and different every day. Good location a 5-10 min walk from the port. You will get woken up by the chickens each morning but we thoroughly recommended this homestay.

    Amazing ”

The room and washroom was very clean and organized. Everything was thought out well. My friend and I both had two outlets on each side of the bed. The bathroom light was automated. Mek had bikes ready for us at our arrival, just as we requested. There are many bike renting shops nearby, but it saved us a couple minutes. He also booked our snorkelling trip for us (100,000 IDR) and was very helpful. Breakfast was ready exactly at the time we requested, and there was a different meal every day! It was also only a 10-minute walk to the beach. Highly recommended :)

    Brilliant stay”

We had a wonderful time here. Our room was cleaned every other day which was plenty. Breakfast was always prompt and something delicious and different each day. They were friendly and helpful throughout our stay (we extended by another three days). The location was out the way enough not to be noisy but close to shops, beach, restaurants and bars, perfect for us. 5/10min walk to the beach.

    Great Family, Great Place”

Really cool homestay with VERY clean facilities. The breakfast every morning is very good and different everyday. 10 minute walk from the main strip so I think it'll be a good idea to rent a bike during your stay or simply walk. If I come back to Gili I will definitely stay here!

Excellent budget accommodation. Owner and staff very friendly. Very clean. Lovely breakfast on our balcony. Hot water in a flask and coffee on request all day. Hot and cold fresh water shower. Very good AC. 8 to 10 minute walk from harbour, found it easy with maps.me app. TV with satellite channels.

Perfect stay for the buget traveller”

Really clean room with comfortable bed and shower. Owner/staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Location is just a small walk from the main road. Not for the traveller who has high resort like expectations, but perfect if you just want a nice place to sleep, shower and eat breakfast. Would recommend to everyone. Mbah Mek is furthermore a really friendly man who wants nothing but to help his guest. His wife makes the best breakfasts everyday of your stay. You are staying in an Indonesian neighbourhood though and not some secluded resort, if you want the latter and think loose running chickens, dirt roads et cetera are filthy this is not the place for you.

    exceeded expectations”

On our arrival to Mbah Mek we were greeted by the super friendly "grandpa Mek" which made us feel right at home. Our room was beautiful and had a good level of privacy. Breakfast was delicious and was delivered to our outdoor patio each morning, which we enjoyed in a serene environment serenaded by roosters. The location was great for us, a short walk from the beach and nightlife, something you definitly want if staying on Gili T. We felt very safe walking around and found a nice bike rental just up the road. The bathroom was clean though the water was cold, however this is quite normal for an affordable homestay. Overall it is exceptional value for money and we highly reccommend staying here. Angela & Joe

We stayed 1 night and it was nice!”

Mr Mbah Mek and his wife are a wonderful couple. very accommodating and friendly. Our room was lovely, a little dark which is nice when you want to sleep in, but not so helpful when the electricity goes out, which I hear is not often. Breakfast was okay, the coffee was great! And overall the hotel was great value if you are only looking for a place to sleep. There is not much of a common area to hang out in if you are planning on just lounging around all day. Other than that, Mr Mhab Mek has a very nice place :)

Great breakfast, great service, great room.

Our stay here was great. It's a little far from then beach but you get the real feel of gili local life here. The room was great, AC worked well great English TV channels different tasty breakfast every morning with new water bottles and coffee and fruit. The owners are ahh a nice couple and very kind and helpful. For the price it is fantastic! Can't complain. The power went out once while we were here but that is normal for the island and the owners gave us lights and were very nice making sure we were ok. Highly reccomend this place.

Lovely little home stay, rooms are clean and great value for money for Gili considering they are modern, with air con and a TV. The owner wasn't sure what to cook for breakfast when I advised I followed a vegan diet (strict vegetarian) he obviously went away and thought about it and served me two delicious vegan friendly meals both mornings. I would return here great place to stay.

    Best homestay”

    Cable TV, Hot Shower, AC

I booked this room with a really cheap price from agoda, so I'm really satisfied with the room I got with that price. Comfortable bed, hot shower, cable tv (indovision), air conditioner, yummy breakfast + 2 water bottles everyday, dedicated owner. Towels were not provided in room at first but then i asked to Mbah Mek and he gave it right away. The only cons was the distance to the beach, a bit far, but overall I had a pleasant stay in Mbah Mek. Should be more than one star hotel!

Stay here!! We didn't want to leave....”

Mbah Mek (Grandpa Mek) is an absolute legend. The guy is educated, knowledgable sweet and funny and we adored him. The breakfasts are wonderful and the AC is powerful.

We cannot recommend this place enough. Having stayed at 4 various homestays on the island, we have a fairly good grasp of what is on offer and Mbah Mek outshone them all by quite a way. Breakfast is served at whatever time you like on your terrace and was always amazing - Different every day (from fluffy, airy home cooked waffles to a tasty omelette with vegetables and toast) and prepared to a high standard, along with fruit and tea and coffee. The room itself was spacious and cool (the AC was the strongest we had ever felt.) with a big bed and it was a lovely surprise to find that our sheets/towels were changed and room cleaned every other day (rare in a homestay). We stayed here for a week in the end and only left because we weren't clever enough to book up while he was still available and he had another booking. The room also had a TV with loads of English speaking channels (again very rare). But the best thing by far is the man himself.....the guy is humble and loves nothing more than to tend to his beautiful garden all day but if you need or want to know anything then he is there. He has a background in 5 star hospitality and it more than shows in the standards of service that you receive from what is essentially a beautiful if modest homestay. Stay here and you will not be disappointed! Mbah Mek, if you'e reading this ....'Hello and thanks again. I hope the kittens are doing OK' :)

Mbah Mek was the main reason we liked Gili T”

Mbah Mek is a legend. Nicest dude ever and super interesting once you get talking to him. Location was great. No frills hotel for the budget traveller.

We weren't that impressed with Gili T as it was just too busy and people weren't as friendly as other parts of Indonesia. The main reason we both enjoyed Gili T at all was staying with Mbah Mek. The rooms are basic and a bit beaten up but for the price, you can't complain. The man himself is super nice and the more we talked to him, the more we realised he had quite the story to tell. Mbah Mek was the main reason we left Gili T with a smile on our face. Come here with an open mind and engage Mbah Mek in some conversation, he is a bloody legend!!!

    More than just a homestay”

    1) The owner 2) The hospitality 3) The extra mile

The reason I score everything 5 for Mbah Mek is because the stay exceeds my expectation. It is silly to compare a homestay to a hotel. The disappointment sinks in when the reality does not live up to the expectation. If you are looking for an experiential holiday, it is not hard to understand why the majority raves about how great the place is. I am not going to write a long story about my 3 night stay nor 'the best 3 things about this hotel' etc. Many reviews have already mentioned that. I really look forward to a longer stay in Mbah Mek next time.
