Wonderful night!”

We had a lovely night at the Mekong Riverside Lodge as the overnight accommodations of our Shompoo Slow Boat Cruise to Luang Prabang. The setting was perfect with beautiful views of the river. The staff was excellent and check-in and check-out super easy. The only downside was that it was a great shower, but, hey, we were in the jungle so I was pretty pleased to have a shower at all. I highly recommend this hotel!

Great but not sure about security ”

The hotel was very good and comes with mosquito nets which was excellent. The only downside is the lack of security. The Windows are just shutters with no glass and the locks on these shutters are just a small bolt type lock (similarly to a small toilet door lock) but I just didn't like leaving my stuff in there. I'm not sure if this was because we were paranoid as it seemed like local children we're stealing stuff off the boat whilst it was unloaded in Pakbeng. On the upside, there is a nice Indian right near to the hotel which means you can stay close by and not stay away from the room long!

nice cheer-up after a long boat trip”

the room, the view, the restaurant

After the long cold day riding a boat from Thai border, Mekhong Riverside Lodge is giving you something to look forward to. The room is very nice with spacious balcony where you can just sit and relax while enjoy the river view.. It is just 2-minute walk from the pier. Its restaurant serves the best indian food ever (it also has Thai and Lao food) I am not so crazy about the breakfast but I would highly recommend this place. The staffs are very nice. And after 7-hour boat trip, this is exactly what you need.

Exceptional”

The lodge was up the hill from the boat dock where we came in which made the location excellent. The room was clean and nicely presented with a lovely balcony and a great view of the Mekong River. Unfortunately, the bed was very hard and we did not sleep well. Breakfast was included which made it convenient for the second day of our boat tour. Check in took awhile because the staff had to find someonesomeone who spoke English.

Nice but too expensive for what it is”

Clean, riverview, hot shower.

Booked in advance because I wasn't sure what to expect in Laos or Pak Bang. Having hindsight I would have just checked out a few guesthouses and made a decision upon arrival. Loas and Pak Bang are safe so there is no need to feel rushed to secure lodging. Overall the Mekong Riverside Lodge is nice. It's clean, has hot showers and a lovely view of the river. The walls are VERY thin, so don't expect any sound privacy. The staff was friendly and English speaking. Breakfast is included and lunch for the slow boat can be arranged for a small premium. If your budget supports it, this might be a good option. It is not a good value for the cost, (my guess is other guesthouses are just as comfortable, but perhaps not as aesthetically nice). There are other options for backpackers and flashpackers.

We paid £24 for a bungalow on Agoda. If you have to stay in Pakbeng this is probably the best of an awful bunch. Pakbeng has nothing going for it. Over priced food, greedy shop and restaurant owners and scruffy surroundings. Only stay if necessary.

loved this place”

magnificent views

what a wonderful suprise, we caught the slow boat from the thai-lao border and were really glad that we had prebooked our accommodation, as there were lots of touts vying for trade when we got there, we were also pretty tired, so didnt have to go thru that hassle. the huts sit right on the edge of the mekong, they were really nice, rustic, with fantastic views, picture watching the elephants coming down for their morning drink, upon waking and walking out to the balcony. breakfast exellent for that part of the world. great value for money and worth every cent

Really nice river view”

As written in other reviews, it was quite noisy in the morning because the lodge is just in front of the pier. If you have an earplug, it doesn't really bother you. In addition, the shower wasn't so good, poor wifi in my room, staff was not very friendly, the wall was thin so you could hear your neighbors...etc We got disappointed several times, but the river view from the balcony was just spectacular especially in the morning, so we have no regrets staying here.

our stay”

1. location 2.the front porch overlooking the Mekong 3.easy walk up a slight hill to the hotel

We feel this hotel is over-rated and over priced, but given that with the location and Mekong River boats stopping here over night, they have a monopoly. The food in town was expensive compared to what we had been spending also. Again, where else are you going eat? None of the rooms have A/C, only a ceiling fan. but it did cool off at night it was pleasant. The view from the porch is absolutely wonderful. Our room was clean, plenty of hot water. The walls are made of split , thin bamboo, but had a very cozy feel. As for breakfast, we asked to have it at 7am as we needed to be on the boat at 7:45am. We showed up at at 7 and the girls in the restaurant area couldn't even give us a cup a coffee....even with pointing and motioning to the cups....nothing until the hotel owner appeared and then we were able to be served coffee and tea. We gulped down our breakfast and had no time for that 2nd cup of coffee.

Great views of the Mekong”

Views, Bedding, location

Overnight Stop-over for boats going up the Mekong. You can see this hotel overlooking the dock where the boats stop. Has the best views in town. Rooms are traditional bamboo hut style ( expect to hear noise) but with all the mod cons - AC, WIFI, Hot water etc) Really comfortable and large modern bathrooms with good hot showers. It was cold the night we were there but had the best night sleep under thick duvet and lovely white sheets. I love the decor of dark wood floors and shutters which open up to bring in the amazing views of the river and mountains. Great for sundowners and woke up early to watch the elephants on the other side of the river. Very convenient to the boats and the rest of town ( it is pretty small place). Only downside was the breakfast was just so-so.
