Beautiful, beautiful”
Momijiya Bekkan Kawa No Iori Ryokan was one of the highlights of our trip. It is set away from the city so you really get a feel for what it may have been like to stay in a ryokan in the old days. The kaiseki dinner and breakfast were excellent and the service superb. We had our own private hot tub outside in a private garden. Price may seem expensive, however considering the two meals and all you are getting, it is well worth it.
It was a great first ryokan experience”
It was a great time to visit Kyoto in late November, and definitely the best time to appreciate the settings which Momijiya Bekkan Kwan No Iori Ryokan nestle ... a gentle stream runs through it... beautiful and natural landscape all around, quiet, tranquil, away from it all. Then again, it means that it takes some travelling there, but it is truely worth it. However, for anyone who is look to be able to do MORE than just enjoying the hot baths and in-room kaiseki cuisine, then this would not be the place. Hence, for us who would looking for our initial ryokan experience, 1 night was enough and very enjoyable. If possible, we would suggest hiring a car to drive from Kyoto city to Takao where the ryokan is, around 30-40mins ... especially if you have a lot of luggage. It is a lot easier then catching the bus.
Blissful haven in the mountains”
Nestled within the valley of Mt Takaoyama, some 20 minutes from Kyoto central lies the sleepy town of Umegahata. The town has 3 other hotels / ryokans but we were glad to have picked Momijiya (Iori) as it was nothing short of a blissful experience. Despite the bone freezing tempretatues, it was calming - nay, soul enriching, to be able to soak in our private outdoor bath whilst taking in the zen like garden which was walled off by nature, the trees and the misty mountain of Mt Takao, especially after a long hike about the area. The Ryokan Annex (not to be confused with the Main building/ Honkan) is within walking distance of several temples and it also straddles a lovely river which you could hike along a man made path. To round up our pleasant stay here, this Ryokan had served up a really scrumptious dinner and breakfast. Though the bath was a bit too small for 2 at a time, I would still recommend a stay over at Momijiya simply for a true Japanese Ryokan experience!
great staff and really nice place ”
we drove there and the place is very hard to find since there are not many signs showing how to drive there. also, no much lights along the road so it is kinda dangerous to drive there at night. the ryokan is located at a very isolated area so it is very quiet and with fresh air. no convenience store nearby so if you feel hungry in the middle of the night, you cant get any food nearby. its better to get some snacks before going back to the ryokan. they provide high quality breakfast and dinner every day. their menu is also different every day and the food is good value for money. I would definitely recommend this place to my friends if they want to experience some authentic japanese traditional ryokan stay in kyoto.
Simply Lovely 😊 ”
Momijiya is absolutely wonderful. I visited in February. It’s definitely more for couples than a couple of friends traveling in Japan, but I had an awesome experience regardless. The location is beautiful and remote, up a windy mountain road and the hotel is nestled into a river with a really cool suspension bridge. The Kaiseki dinner and breakfast was an incredible experience (first time for me). The staff was so Warm and friendly, they took care of every detail; shuttle to and from Kyoto, adding foot warmers to the beds at night. I would love to come back here in the late spring when everything’s is in bloom or in the fall with the leaf colors.
Excellent ryokan, great experience!”
Probably one of my favorite experiences out of my two week trip to Tokyo and Kyoto. The staff are super friendly and speak good English. There is a convenient shuttle bus from hanazono station to the ryokan. Just make sure you call ahead and let them know you will need the bus. Take the JR line from Kyoto station to hanazono station once you arrive. I booked a room with a private outdoor bath and it was just awesome. My wife loved the atmosphere of the ryokan and surroundings. There are 3 interesting shrines to visit within 15-30 minute walking distance. Overall highly recommend this place! The food is just awesome!
Amazing first experience at a ryokan!”
Our stay was amazing. The ryokan is located in a forest in Kyoto. We took a free shuttle to the ryokan. To access the ryokan, you have to walk over a suspension bridge above a crystal clear creek. The service was amazing and the staff was able to give us clear instructions on how our stay will work. They spoke mostly Japanese but know some English words and phrases. Luckily I am able to understand a bit of Japanese. Dinner was over an hour long and afterwards there was. Geisha dance demonstration. The room is clean and the maids will setup the futons during dinner. Private bath is very nice and I was able to soak outside peacefully. I would love to come back to this ryokan.
It was a really good experience.”
It was a trip with my parents, they were really satisfied. Ryokan's scenery was great and it had a private outdoor bath of batkan. Japanish dinner and maico's performance were excellent, especially breakfast was very good. The Ryokan staff were very kind to every little thing. When we wanted to go to private bathroom in honkan, they offered a pick up service from bakkan to honkan. Ryokan was so quiet and clean that it was enough place to finish the good vacation. Our family will not forget good memories in Momijiya Ryokan.
I can't recommend this place enough”
We spent hours researching different Ryokans in Kyoto and chose this one because of the beautiful remote location and private outdoor bath. I am so glad that we went with this one. There are no words for how beautiful the location of this Ryokan is. It's remote, but getting there was super easy with the shuttle they provide. The service was also amazing, they made us feel so special and it was truly a unique experience staying here. I'd love to go back.
One of the highlights of my trip”
Fantastic Ryokan about 50 minutes north of Kyoto nestled in the mountains right off of a river. My girlfriend and I arrived in the rain and were greeted by three employees with umbrellas who guided us into their beautiful establishment. The room we stayed in was amazing - we had a balcony with luscious green views and could hear the relaxing sounds of the river ambling past us. The dinner was decadent with some of the best Tuna I had in my life with a delicous breakfast as well. I highly recommend you spend a night here, it was one of the highlights of my 10-day trip to Japan. The nearby temples are a short hike away and incredibly gorgeous as well.
Peace of mind”
If you want to relax and to be connected to Nature this is definitely the place for you to stay, especially if you have spent some time in downtown Kyoto already. As soon you arrive the Ryokan the time has a different rhythm. Strongly advise for people that are looking for being within themselves and close to one of the best natural locations in just a few minutes from Kyoto.
great onsen not too far from Kyoto”
I definitely recommend this if you're looking for a traditional onsen ryokan near Kyoto. We loved having the chance to experience all the traditional things - the amazing meals, wearing the yukata, sleeping on futon/tatami. All the other visitors were Japanese, which is a good sign. The staff spoke enough English. The public & private baths were slightly less luxurious than I had hoped, but still very nice. It's a great place to get away & relax & experience some real Japanese culture!
I wish I could have stayed longer!! Want to go back!”
I went there for 1 day as part of our Honeymoon. It was totally worth it and me and hubby wished to stay longer. Pickup We took shuttle from the station and even though I forgot to inform them the pickup time, I had no issue of taking the shuttle bus. The bus arrived on time and it has “Momijiya” sign on the side the bus. Room We stayed at western style room because we just wanted to have a bigger room with nice terrace area, even though we actualky didn’t use the bed. The staff nicely prepared putton after dinner as we requested. Bath area It was perfect for us! The water was warm and we could easily warm up. The small garden area next to bath was amazing. It really help release all our fatigue after all the wedding prep. Haha! Food Dinner was served to our room. Food is served nicely one by one and at the end, you will be pretty full! They have beer/drink options to add. Breakfast was also good and athentic japanese style. Overall, I would love to revisit them!
Wonderful couple of days”
It's never cheap to stay at quailty ryokan but it was worth it to stay at Momijiya. The communal bath is small but no one else was in it on the two occasions I used it. The private outdoor bath was wonderful and I would very much recommend this option. The food was beautiful and varied. We went for a very enjoyable walk along the river and could have easily stayed for longer. It was very peaceful and relaxing. I accidentally left my phone charger and international adapter but the staff were extremely helpful via email and put the items on the shuttle bus the next day so I could collect them at the station. I have very happy memories of our stay. It was a very romantic place to spend a few days.
just relax ”
Had a peaceful and good rest at the Momijiya Ryokan. Me and my wife appreciated Sakee ( hope i get his name correct) and all staffs for being very patient, attentive and helpful during our stay. i booked a room with no bathtub. Meaning i can not shower within the room, i need to go to the public bathtub ( share ) . Both time i am there, no one else is there. i guessed everyone else must have both room with bathtub. [ do take note, we can book a private bathtub for 45 mins for a minimum fee] The Great thing is that there is toilet within the room. The dinner and breakfast was beautifully arrange and it taste amazing. There is no shop within the vicinity, i would suggest to bring your own wine or liquor and some crackers. Do take note there will be no other activities after Dinner.
Amazing”
This is an amazing ryokan located a little ways outside of kyoto. The scenery is fabulous, located on the side of a mountain with a river right below you. There is also a large temple accross the road that you can hike up to (about 20 minutes up hill) or there is a trail that follows the river. The staff is all excellent with great service.
Impressive ”
We have had an pleasant night in this hot-spring hotel. The staff are considerate and always cheerful. Even if it was a rainy day, they even helped to brush your shoes and luggage tires . The food was delicately presented and good in flavour. Momijiya is located next to a river with a breathtaking view. All the things here are just impressively wonderful.
Amazing experience”
Staying at the Momijiya Ryokan was an incredible experience! The location is breathtaking and the service was awesome. Our private Onsen in our room was just the cherry on top. Highly recommended!
Exceptional”
Pros: - exceptional service by all the staffs. Everyone was so welcoming and polite. - summertime riverbed dinner experience was awesome and food was delicious. - maiko (geisha apprentice) performance after dinner was an unique experience. - nice private outdoor hot spring bath. - hotel provided shuttle service to and from JR station. - location is secluded in the mountain; hotel is quiet and away from the hustle and bustle. Cons: - room seemed a bit dated, small, and was not the cleanest. Overall speaking, the location and ambiance, customer service, dinner & breakfast service was all exceptional. I would recommend this hotel to guests that enjoy a quiet stay away in Kyoto.
Exceptional stay, had a great time!”
From start to finish, all the staff was very helpful and kind, very patient and attentive. The kaiseki dinner was exceptionally good, the traditional multiple course dinner was so beautiful and elegant and highlighted the ingredients so wonderfully. We got a room in the Annex with a private bath and I wanted to stay in the bath FOREVER. It's not big but it fit me and my husband comfortably. The view from the bath was lovely and so relaxing. There is a shower in the suite as well as a toilet (I was worried about that, reading the other reviews). The futons were so warm and so comfortable. The maid also put a heater at the foot of the futon so my feet were toasty warm all night! Haven't slept so well in a long time. It is a beautiful get away, and when I come back to Japan, would definitely book this ryokan again! Wish I could stay forever!
