Beautiful spot for relaxing and swimming on the beach”

This is one of my favorite spots on Koh Tao. The resort is beautifully located just off the beach with a nice pool and restaurant overlooking the beach. We stayed in the air-con rooms: clean, comfortable, well maintained. The staff are friendly and helpful. The restaurant has a good mix of Thai seafood and western favorites. The beach is great for swimming and one of the best on the island for snorkeling. Nice coral, lots of fish, a small rocky island in the middle of the bay you can climb onto and jump off. There are 2 or 3 other small resorts on this beach, a couple of massage places, a couple of dive shops. So it's quiet but not totally isolated. The resort provides free taxis at certain times to get to some of the more populated beaches if you need more entertainment or eating options. Or you can order a taxi yourself from reception at any time. All in all, a lovely place to spend some time. Thanks to Montalay for a great holiday! We'll be back.

Perfect for relaxing or families!”

Beautiful location, beautiful hotel, lovely staff.

we moved over to this hotel in tanote bay after realizing that sairee beach was loud, crowded, and not great for what we wanted from the ocean. the pool here is clean and beautiful, with a great view of tanote bay, with rocks and mountains. we have a 9 month old baby, and the hotel is perfect, other than the fact that it's at the bottom of a bumpy, dirt, road... so getting to and from the town on a motor bike was a bit complicated... but do-able. we got way more than what we bargained for here, and ended up changing our flight back to bangkok to stay 3 extra nights in the hotel. the location is very remote, so you're actually able to relax, snorkle, fish, and have some drinks without watching fire dancers and body painters. the staff is incredible. there was a free shuttle to get to and from where you're going/coming from (by shuttle, i of course mean pick-up-truck). also, my husband got incredibly ill while we were here (not caused by the resort) and they sent their driver to the town to pick up antibiotics for him. no charge... so i tipped him. great area for snorkeling, rent fins/mask/snorkel for 100 baht per 24 hours and swim 20 feet off shore. see amazing sea life, and jump off a really big rock! the cons? limited stuff around the resort, so if you're traveling with a baby or children, stock up on what you need near the pier before you get here... it will save you a day or so of going back or forth.

Remote hotel with all features”

beautiful rooms, great pool, and magnificent view

Montalay is a great hotel. The biggest minor is its reachability: the road is not easy (and if you're not experienced on a scooter I wouldn't advise it at all.) All the rest are plusses: nice rooms at decent prices (if you book on agoda ;) ) superb swimming pool, silent but friendly staff, near a beach. I prolonged 2 times. The restaurant is great. Really good food with good presentation. Bit steep prices compared to other places indeed, and there could be more Thai variation. Other reviews tell Montalay is noisy due to construction: this is true but greatly overrated in the reviews. Everywhere on this island they are building, so there is noise everywhere... And it didn't bother me at all while I was there, because you're not sitting in your room all day. The crickets make more noise :) (I almost didn't come to this hotel due to some negative comments that were posted lately, but I'm very happy I checked it out after all. Checked the whole island for decent hotels, and this price/quality was not found else where.) The thing I missed most were daybeds near the pool. Don't come here if you want night life. THen opt for something on Mae Nam or Sairee beach.

Peace, quiet and nature”

Montalay is on tanote bay, Koh Tao. It has the best snorkeling off the beach on the island. I stayed for 3 days. The restaurant is basic but the menu offers more than other resorts in the bay. (Other two restaurants with good review in the bay were closed) this spot can feel quite isolating as it is away from any main tourist areas but that is what I loved about it. Small tropical huts nestled in the trees, surrounded by nature, just me and the beach. It has a small pool, diving center and basic beach bar. Also a pick up truck serves as you taxi and pier transfers service 3 times a day. The sand is rough and like most Asian tropics the surrounding waters are still battling the build up of plastic pollution. If you go for a snorkel, do your part and take some out of the water, for the fish’s sake.

Spacious rooms at a quiet beach”

Friendly staff, spacious rooms

The Montalay resort is situated at the east side of Koh Tao. The beach is really quiet. Unfortunately there were no sun beds on the beach. For some excitement you have to go to the west side of the island, as there is not much to do arohnd the resort. The rooms are clean and spacious. The restaurant is good but a little bit pricey.

Great Place in Tanote Bay!”

I like Tanote Bay as it is less crowded and a great place to snorkel and relax. This is NOT the party side of Koh Tao! I stayed in one of the 'treehouses' (fan bungalow across the road and up in the trees, but with a view of the sea) and really loved it. The fan was all I needed as there was a sea breeze that kept it from getting too hot and it felt very private. If you have any problem with stairs, however, the bungalows are not for you and I would suggest the hotel itself. The pool was small but nice and the food was really good! I would stay here again.

The Montalay Resort is the former Black Tip Resort and has completely renewed after 2008. Modern and clean accommodations, friendly personel. The only Resort at the Tanote bay with a swimmingpool. No problem to upgrade the room with airco. Good taxi services. Very good snorkle options.

An incredible stay”

Although the overall staff performance was just a bit above average, there were two staff who stood head and shoulders above the rest and really made the service level quite high. The location on Tanote Bay is secluded, so if you want to spend time elsewhere or in town, keep that in mind - you'll need a motorbike. We, however, spent most of our time at the resort because the snorkeling directly off shore is phenomenal. We booked a snorkel tour with O2 - the hotel was going to charge 850 to do that, but the tour only charged 650 over the phone - I think they are a bit greedy about that. The views are spectacular throughout. We stayed in one of the cottages, quite a few stairs to get there, but worth it for the seclusion and view. Food in the restaurant was reasonably priced (commensurate with the high quality) Definitely going back!

Moderate Resort on an Excellent Beach Outside the Main City”

Montalay Beach Resort is well away from the main Koh Tao destinations of Sairee Beach and Mae Haad. You already know that if you’re looking for accommodations out here, and this is a great location if you want to be away from the parties, bars, restaurants, and beaches of Koh Tao’s west coast. That being said, there isn’t a lot around Montalay. Tanote Bay is one of the best beaches on the island (apart from Sairee, which is always packed) and has some of the best snorkeling (we scootered to multiple other beaches, bays, and scuba dove at a few sites only to realize we had this excellent one already at our doorstep). The beach is rarely as full as those on the west coast, but there are also not many great restaurant or bar options. Similarly, you’ll have to pay for a ride or rent a scooter if you want to get to the walkable area of Koh Tao in Sairee and Mae Haad. The hotel is a bit worn, but still well kept. The staff are constantly working to clean up fallen leaves, bus tables, and tidy up rooms. Staff are helpful, but not the friendliest. There are a few dive outfit options nearby including the resort’s very own (we used Calypso next door due to it’s high reviews). The breakfast buffet is adequate and enables you to fill up to your heart’s desire. After breakfast, the kitchen serves good to-order food. The bungalow style cabins are in need of the most updating, but are comfortable, and protected from the rain and bugs. The cabins would have epic views if the hotel trimmed up some of the trees, but there are pros and cons to that as well. Overall, a reasonable place to stay if you don’t mind (or in fact want to) be away from the main tourist area.

Very good”

Snorkelling, staff friendliness, beautiful surroundings

We were picked up by Montalay staff at the pier, which was very nice. It is a bit of a drive to the hotel as it is located on the north end of the island (10 minutes maybe). The resort grounds are very nice, and very close to the ocean. The one downside I would say about staying here is that the sand is not as nice as the other beaches on the island. On the plus side it is not as crowded, and the snorkelling is very good right out front of the hotel. The staff are very nice and will go the extra mile for their guests. It is on the sunrise side of the island, so if you want to watch the sunset you'll have to go to another beach (near the pier is good). Overall we really liked staying here, the rooms are big, the food is good, and the grounds are beautiful.

A great hotel hotel on a lovely beach!”

Great option of hotel for this beach. This is our 3rd visit to this hotel. The rooms are clean (we have stayed in both styles for families (the hotel style room at the back of the hotel and the individual bungalow style). The staff are very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is good and the food at lunch and dinner is also really quality. The beach is ideal for snorkelling off although you need to be careful of the coral in certain places. You can also get water taxis (long tail boats) to other parts of the island. They also run taxis to the pier and other beaches. A great place to stay in a Koh Tao, very relaxing!

Very friendly staff and excellent location”

Great location, comfortable rooms, super friendly staff

We spend 2 days and nights here and regret having found it late in our trip, would have liked to stay longer. Tanote Bay is great for snacking and the beah has fins sand. The hotel has a nice pool and great infrastructure. There are rooms as well as bungalows in the luscious garden, both are a good option, though we chose the rooms, because we had 2 rooms (parents + 3 kids). Staff are super friendly and the food is also great. I recommend and we plan to return to get a deal on PADI certified course + lodging so the whole family learns to dive.

Wonderful place for a romantic getaway”

Very nice room for the price and wonderful snorkelling from the beach

We spent 5 nights at the Mandalay and found it an enchanting place to stay. The room represented great value for money and the views of the ocean were a spectacular bonus. The food in the restaurant was above average but quite pricey. Sadly few vegetarian options but plenty of delicious fresh seafood. Situated on Tanote Bay it felt remote, which was exactly what we were after. Far away from any hustle and bustle. One of the nicest beaches and great snorkelling. Very sharp coral on the beach so watch out.

Fantastic value for money, great diving. ”

Great Diving centre, on the beach and nice presentation

Excellent hotel with well appointed rooms and a good diving school. The restaurant has a good menu and the pools and beach are very nice. It is a 15 minute drive to the main part of koh Tao but frequent taxis operate for 150 thb per person. The dive shop is excellent and not as crowded as the other dive centres on the island so I would recommend staying here for diving courses (also, discounts may apply on accommodation so check that out before you book). Will be back there next time I'm in koh Tao.

Nice relaxing getaway!”

Nice quiet bay. great snorkeling right outside hotel.

We really enjoyed out stay at Montalay. Services by the staff were prompt and professional. We were picked up at the pier; from there, we hopped on the back of pick-up truck for a 15-20 ride to the hotel. The ride was bumpy and hilly. After 10 tired days of traveling, we were glad to be at Montalay. Great place to relax and re-energize for the next leg of our trip. We spent 2 days doing nothing except relaxing by the bay and snorkeling--all right outside of the hotel. Breakfast was basic and decent. Free internet was not reliable.

Montalay staff was very friendly and professional. The only thing is that they have an irrational expectation that it is reasonable to ask customers to wait 1 1/2 hours for a taxi. Taxi drivers are given deferential treatment...even though they charge outrageous prices (should not pay more than 120 BTH for any trip). I got bitch at by the receptionist for being 7 minutes late for the taxi. The chef was excellent. I didn't even want to eat anywhere else. I wish Montalay staff would pick up garbage and cigarette butts off the beach. I also wish there was a telephone in the room. You have to walk to reception for all issues.

Beautiful and peaceful resort”

Remote and private location, far from all the hassle, absolutely beautiful surroundings in the Resort, great snorkeling right in front of resort

We really enjoyed the remote location, there were not too many people on the beach because the road there is not easiest to drive with scooter. We used the hotels own taxi service which worked very well. Private taxis from city center or harbour are quite expensive unless you have a bigger group. The Resort is on a really beautiful beach and Resort itself had really beautiful garden and surroundings. Snorkeling was perfect just in front of the resort, diving lessons were also possible right from the resort. Breakfast was good but dinner was a bit too western for our taste. But we found a small restaurant right at the beach where they served really good authentic thaifood and great coctails. Our room (suite) was wonderful with two rooms and big bathroom and big balcony. All in all we were really pleasantly suprised both about the room and the resort when compared to the official 3 stars rating. What might be the reason for three stars is that there is no reception or other personnel available after 9 PM, food and drinks selection is overall quite limited and theres no room service. For us this didnt matter because we had bought our room fridge full on drinks and snacks and we ate at the restaurant nearby. Would definately like to go back.

Make sure you stay here”

Accom great, beach was great, snorkelling was great

The far side of Koh Tao is by far the best side for a great mix of relax, beach, and snorkelling. We loved our time at this resort. Is easier to get to than Hin Wong Bay and snorkelling nearly as good.

Remote paradise but subject to beach litter.”

Comfortable rooms, affordable

The room was very nice with a balcony and glimpse of the beach through the trees, there is only one place to eat and that is in the resort, the food is great if slightly overpriced for a traveler on a budget. The beach is beautiful with a cliff jumping rock about 60m off the beach which is an easy swim. The only problem is that the beach when we were there was completely covered in litter (plastic bottles bags etc) making swimming close to shore discussing. I was told that this was seasonal but it was the only place around the three island that was this bad. A note to staff: "maintaing the beach daily is more important that cutting the grass with scissors." Although the beach was less than appetising once you braved the litter the water was crystal clear and great for snorkelling. However the dive shop attached to the resort were less than friendly, but did provide snorkelling equipment. All in all we actually did enjoy our stay in Montalay but found it failed our expectations and we would seek other options when we are to return.
