Overpriced, but on par with other lodging in the koyasan area. Rooms were spacious. Meals were expensive.

lovely monastery very close to the main temples and to a supermarket. The monk were really nice with us and they invite you to participate to the prayer...such of an experience!

Good service and strategic facility”
Everything was good, good service, hot bath availability and strategic location with a family Mart just right outside in case you are hungry. We got the shojin ryori for dinner, and the food was tasty. Would be great if they can have an attached bathroom, but I guess this is expected of a temple lodging.

Group of 3”
Interesting experience. Something to try at least once. If I were to do it again I would spend one night in a temple and the rest of my stay in a hotel or AirBnB. The monks are excellent and very accommodating and food is fantastic. The location is also great in the sense that it’s about a 5-10 minute walk from the main bus drop off point and on the way you’ll see many more temples and sights.

It was very interesting experience. Monks were not too talkative but very helpful. Room was good size. Shared bathroom/onsen was clean. Dinner was very tasty and it was a lot to eat. I really enjoyed the silence and darkness at night.

It was a perfect temple stay. The monks are super kind and respectful, especially Chiba-san (forgive me if I got his name wrong). The room and bathroom are amazingly clean. Hot bath was perfect after a long night walk through Okuno-in. The morning prayer was calming and enlightening. They were kind to include the visitors along with the ceremony. Everything is as I expected and much more. Arigatou gozaimasu Yochi-in no minna san.

Amazing experience. ”
Fantastic insight into Shingon Buddhism. Monks were so friendly and helpful, although the language barrier was a little challenging at times! The food was absolutely fantastic, an opportunity to try things we never would have at home. Morning ceremony was also a great experience. At the end the priest taught us about the importance of the lotus flower in his religion and took time to answer our questions. Onsen bath available for use in the evenings. Yochi-in and Koyasan in general we’re so peaceful and a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of Japanese cities. Mountain scenery was beatiful too. Lovely place just to wonder about and take it all in. Would highly recommend, gives you a totally different perspective of Japanese life.

We paid over $220 per night to freeze in our room and sleep in our jackets to stay warm.”
It’s beaufiful and unique experience, but it is worth repeating that this is a temple and not a hotel, so super basic features like adequate heating and the ability to come and go is limited. Our stay was late-November and was blistering cold. Even with the heater in our room on full-blast, it still was a freezer box. Plus there is a 9pm curfew, and there is absolutely nothing to do except stay in your room and try to stay warm. It was like paying $220 per night to camp out in a temple. The veggie food also was disappointing. I like what they are trying to do but would not recommend staying here in the cold winter months.

Good, but avoid in cold weather ”
Everything was clean and well organized. Food was also good, nice staff. *BUT* (big but) it was f**king freezing! We were there mid November, the temperature at night was under zero. No heating in the rooms or in the public areas.

overall ok but too cold to stay indoor”
overall ok. Definitely clean enough. but too cold to stay indoor. No towel or basic amenities. Would even charge ¥500yen for towel and bath robe rental. Barely any amenities in the room other than kerosene heater, bedsheet, and blanket. Please add some basic amenities! Other than that, overall experience is ok.

It was an unique experience for both of us, and it exceeded the expectation. ”
The food was exceptional. The bath was so good too. Love the morning service. The temple was quiet and the garden was such a delight! The slippers were a bit too slippery for walking with socks on.

Good but expensive experience ”
Beautiful temple, with great rooms and with a mystic feeling that makes the experience really unique. The prices are a litle bit high. The food is good, the rooms are big, confortable and very clean, but we felt that common areas and shared bathrooms are very cold (in november).

Unique experience ”
Koyasan takes some effort to reach but you can have the unique experience of staying in a temple and watching the monks pray and chant in the early morning. The building is lovely and the tatami mat room was comfortable. We didn't realize the showers are not available in the morning. Only from 5pm to 9pm and there is a 9pm building curfew. The food is all vegetarian and artfully prepared and arranged and served on trays on the floor. Be prepared for sitting cross legged or kneeling. I have not stayed in a ryokan but the good and accommodation may be similar. This has the spiritual aspect if that is a draw for you. The massive Okunoin cemetery is definitely worth a visit. The giant cypress trees are magnificent and with over 200000 graves it is Japan's largest cemetary and said to be the resting place of the founder of Shingon Bhuddism.
