Built in 1929 and apparently was a mental hospital originally. Now it is a fully featured gem with roaring log fire in the impressive lounge area, toasty sauna, plunge pool and even its own cinema showing rolling classics for free. 'Tell them it's the most comfortable bed ever'. Job done. Shame about the weather and the full ski area, which doesn't open until the end of June, so only the beginners area Happy Valley was open in the freezing rain and gale force winds!
Dear Fraser, Thank you for your review. I am pleased to see you enjoyed your stay here. The Hotel was originally designed as a Hotel and served as a temporary Hospital during the war. Thank you again for your comments and we hope to see you again soon. Kind regards, Alex Hampshire Rooms Division Manager
Hubby and I stayed here for 2 nights on our self-drive contiki tour of NZ. Wow. This hotel is amazing. It rained on the first day so we took advantage of the hotels own cinema. The next day we headed up to the ski field to mess around in the snow. The breakfast was awesome! Never seen so much variety in my life - they even had a veg and fruit juicer, and nutella!!! My room was newly refurbished - only complaint is the radiator regulator/ nozzle was on backwards. So when we put it on 0 it was very hot, and 5 was off.
Dear Jessica, Thank you for taking the time to review Chateau Tongariro. It is great to see that you enjoyed your stay here. I will be sure to pass on your comments to the Chef! I am sorry about the radiator, we will look into that. Thank you for letting us know. Thank you again Jessica and we hope to see you again soon. Kind regards, Alex Hampshire Rooms Division Manager
Heritage rooms need a new bathroom, sauna needs repair and other minor maintenance is required. Main dining room, fantastic! Food to die for. Good NZ wine list, most Australian wines over priced but some gems to be found.
Dear Mark, Thank you for you recent stay with us. I am pleased to see you enjoyed your stay here. I am sorry in regards to the maintenance issues. We are currently in the planning stages of refurbishment and we hope to have this underway very soon. Thank you again for you comments and we hope to welcome you back. Kind regards, Alex Hampshire Rooms Division Manager
The meal was the very best Lamb meal I have ever tasted in New Zealand. All the staff smiled, were friendly, helpful and polite. We all thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Oh and our room had a magnificent view of the mountain. Thank you Chateau, we shall return.
Dear Sky, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I am to hear you enjoyed your stay and I will be sure to pass you comments onto the chefs. We hope to see you again soon! Kind regards, Alex Hampshire Rooms Division Manager
You’re paying for location & friendly staff. Rooms not at 5 star standard.”
Hotel is in need of a refurbishment. It’s looking a bit tired in places. Our room had a badly cracked sink & architraves were coming off. Tiny tv with limited channels. No omelette stand at breakfast & no Asian offerings at all. Asian 5 stars run rings around it.
Majestic location, stately hotel”
The hotel maintains its air of majesty and splendour despite its age. The lovely old-style lounge area with huge windows and mountain views is perfect for an afternoon rest and coffee, or to sit back and enjoy the piano being played in the evening. We found our room to be a little jaded in appearance, but perfectly functional in all respects. We had our evening meal in the Pihanga Cafe and breakfast in the Ruapehu Restaurant. We thought both were good value for money with a good range of food offered. (This was just as well as the options along the road did not look so appealing.) Staff in both food outlets were were friendly as indeed they were throughout the hotel. The location is quite spectacular, and although we arrived in afternoon rain, once it had cleared the views were stunning.
Good location for skiing, nice facility & service”
despite the resemblance of the building to a hospital, the hotel features very classic and well maintained interior design and facility. only 5min away from the tourist information centre and a small convenience store, you can get most of the useful travel information and daily consumption items fairly easily. there are several walking tour paths just nearby for people who enjoy the surrounding scenery. and the hotel itself has several bars/restaurants/taverns that offer a wide range of food selections. the whakapapa skiing resort is only 15min by bus and the tangoriro national park 20min away. for those skiing fans with a generous budget, i highly recommend this hotel, for it's location and great service and facility.
Spectacular views , hotel is on the older side but still holds those majestic looks, would stay again. Thanks
Dear Jason, Thank you for the review. Pleased to see you enjoyed your stay and we hope to see you again soon. Kind regards, Alex Hampshire Rooms Division Manager
Fantastic location with mountain Ruapehu backdrop ”
The Chateau has an amazing staff and the location was fantastic! Nice Evening dinner was in the Ruapehu Room
Dear sze, Thank you for your review of Chateau Tongariro. Great to see you enjoyed your stay and our evening dinner. We look forward to welcoming you back soon. Kind regards, Alex Hampshire Rooms Division Manager
An overhight at the Chateau Tongairiro”
Arrived at the stated time on our reservation. Unfortunately our room was not ready.Waited in the lounge - offered a coffee & a tea but had to pay for this whilst waiting. Thought this should of been free. After an hour went to reception & our room was ready - they didn't come and inform us! Room was great with a superb view and clean. Evening dinner was in the Ruapehu Room.Pleasant staff and a great meal - although pricey. Room was quiet and a good nights sleep. Breakfast was buffet and had everything. In all a good stay but maintenance in areas needs looking at. Staff were vary pleasant but things like dinner & drinks pricey.
Weekend at the Chateau ”
We spent the weekend at the Chateau to celebrate my partners birthday. The staff were excellent and the facilities were great with the old world charm that we expected. The only disappointment of the weekend was the meal at the near by Tussock Bar on the Friday night.
Great hotel, very enjoyable stay, only way they could improve would be to offer valet parking - but the car park is very very close so it doesn't really matter. Can't wait to stay there again got was fantastic
knocked the chateau off my bucket list ”
Finally fulfilled a dream held since 1963 to come down and stay a night at what I consider to be a icon of New Zealand, it was everything I imagined, the restaurant staff were simply amazing in the Ruapeau Room, the reception was okay, think they were very stressed with so many people, it snowed so that was the icing on the cake. So very glad I finally booked my night.
Beautiful old building in stunning surroundings, The restaurant and the afternoon teas were amazing. Staff were friendly although seemed a little overwhelmed at times when a lot of guests arrived at the same time.
Worst hotel ever stayed in”
Worst hotel ever stayed in. Poor customer service. Was in two rooms over my stay. First room did not have a working toilet. Second room didn't have soap or hairdryer. Room service meals were served with chunks of charcoal. Concierge lied about the view from the first room and didn't seen concern at all that the toilet did not work and wanted to keep me in that room. There was blood stains on the bed. Was ignored when I attempted to go to the cafe for a meal. For the amount you paid for this hotel the customer service is terrible. Will never be staying here again.
wonderful but could have been better”
Was good. The building was splendid. The mountain in the backdrop just jaw dropping but the interior is in bad need of renovation. Still the best hotel in that area though. Could be a lot better if interior was revamped.
Lovely hotel ”
Our stay at the Chateau was ok , staff were really friendly and helpful , it looks grand and beautiful from outside and inside. However the room we were staying the wall was very thin , we could hear noise outside and the flashing of the toilet woke up us many times.
Historic hotel in winter wonderland”
Bayview Chateau Tongariro is a historic hotel set in an amazing place. The hotel exudes old-world charm, though the facilities may not come across as brand-new. Located halfway up Mt Rurapehu, the hotel provides a great view of the surrounding mountains, which is particularly impressive when snow has fallen. It also allows easy access the Whakapapa ski field, as well as the surrounding treks around Mt Ruapehu. Ridge track was awesome to catch sunset! Concierge was also helpful in giving advice on road conditions. We appreciate that greatly! However........ The food option was some what limited and pricey. We had both dinner and breakfast on the next day at Pihanga Cafe. While we had a good experience and delicious dinner, the breakfast was not value-for-money.
One word Superb ”
The chateau is one of the few hotels that is left on the world where they write Service with a big S. What about the view from the lounge on the surrounding - spectacular What about the lounge itself with it is real open fire during the evening. And what is the most important part of the whole review - You can get this all for an affordable price.
Classic elegance with amazing views”
Room was beautiful and clean, the bathroom was a bit dated but still nice and clean. After a cold spring hike the roaring fire and amazing sunset in the grand lobby was a real treat. Also enjoy a round of billiards.
