Quiet Tropical Paradise”
Beautiful bungalows, private, quiet well equipped. Excellent service and delicious food the restaurant. Stunning views over he tranquil bay.
Nice place but do NOT go on the waterfall hike - VERY BAD MOSQUITOS!!”
The hotel was well-run & the staff (especially Romeo) were very nice. It was clean and had a nice atmosphere. However, it was wrong for this hotel to sell a hike to the waterfall through rivers for 6 hours just after heavy rains. Three of us did the hike & we were all covered in literally THOUSANDS of mosquito / san fly ("nono") bites. The guide also had us sit and have lunch along a river & we were all upset and finally walked away because we were covered in "nonos" like fleas on a dog. I had to go to the hospital it was so bad to get antibiotics and antihistamines. Two weeks later, the bites (and scars from the bites) are still present. The hotel needs to explain this to the guide + provide long rubber pants or sell a different hike that isn't through rivers. The guide was (as a person) very nice, but never should have taken us there! Also, if you are reading this review and trying to decide between the Nuku Hiva Pearl Lodge and the Hiva Oa Pearl Lodge, choose Nuku Hiva. The Pearl Lodge in Hiva Oa was very unorganized/unfriendly & there were dead wasps and rat poop in the bungalows. If, however you are going to Hiva Oa, it does have a nice pension that several travelers highly recommended.
Avoidable bike accident but otherwise comfortable”
We booked the Pearl Lodge as a treat on our month long trip in the South Pacific. To start with the positives- we were warmly greeted with garlands and a drink and shown to a beautiful bungalow overlooking Taiohae Bay. Our shower overlooked the bay too which was a bonus. The food wasn't bad and had some local specialities - it was about the same price as the other restaurants on the island. We were also able to have room service and they sweetly gave us a tray for breakfast one day when we overslept. The small pool has a spectacular view. Overall it's very relaxing here and as the Marquesas are very remote we appreciated the extra comfort of staying at the Pearl Lodge. Negatives - the return airport transfer cost was about £125 for two of us. Granted the airport is over an hour's drive away but for this price we expected a comfortable experience. Especially after the 3.5 hour flight from Tahiti. Unfortunately the hotel had asked a local lady to pick us up. She spent the entire journey speaking to her friend in the front passenger seat, whilst we were squeezed in the back seat with a large lad of 17 who played his stereo for over an hour. We arrived at the hotel stiff and sore. If the hotel asks for a significant payment for transfers it should make an effort to make them comfortable. The return journey was better. Then after a few days we asked to borrow the hotel bicycles to cycle into town. We weren't warned about the bikes' failure to break on the steep slope down to the bay. We came off hard onto the gravel and returned to the hotel a few minutes later covered in blood, with the manager saying we should have been told to wheel the bikes to the bottom of the hill. Because of the injuries we had to make two trips to the hospital and one to the pharmacy. Incredibly the cost of these was added to our bill when we came to check out, although it was removed after we complained. A bit more attention to detail would have made this a great stay for us but unfortunat
Bad hotel for the money - Not friendly to Americans”
Hotel is well situated - nice room but service wasn't adequate- hotel not full but room still not cleaned by 1 PM. Extremely misleading information on an expensive excursion taken from the hotel - making the trip unpleasant. Also unsafe boat ride back to the hotel with no life jackets. The food was good at the hotel- but expensive-Overall we did not receive reasonable value for the cost of the room.
Disappointed that the activities I had pre arranged where not available which was one of the primary reasons I stayed there. Local staff much friendlier than their French counterparts. No surprise there. No wifi except at main building which is a drag if you just need to handle a few emails periodically
The staff at the hotel were absolutely wonderful and bent over backwards to make sure that I had the best possible stay. Everyone was really friendly and efficient. The place is beautiful but not too flashy with lovely wooden bungalows. I woke to the sound of the birds and the waves. The gardens are amazing and well looked after with a wide variety of tropical plants and flowers.
We stayed for three days and it was by far the best hotel in the island. I strongly recommend it
We had a great time at this hotel, partly because the bungalows were so nice, partly because the staff was so friendly and accommodating, and partly because Nuku Hiva is a really amazing island. The staff here did everything to make sure we were happy/comfortable, and provided really delicious meals for our day-long excursions. The rooms were very clean. The only issue with the hotel is walking anywhere away from the hotel requires you to walk back, up a steep-ish hill that gets very muddy in the rain. Other than that, we had a great stay.
