Check that the pools are operational first”
Main reason to visit was the pic of beautiful pools which were not functional due to cleaning - were given free pool entry vouchers as compensation which was better than nothing. Food was decent. Heritage building was gorgeous (very very small ensuite). Staff very friendly. Peaceful nature surroundings. Surprisingly, very little info on history of buildings, land, sports, community etc which is a shame for a beautiful iconic venue.
A lovely old Hotel with well maintained grounds in the beautiful rolling countryside of the Waikato. We came for two nights in mid winter for the Springs. While the setting for the pools is magical beside a surging river, the temperature was warm but not hot enough to give satisfaction. No doubt better to be here in the summer if the pools are the purpose. Fortunately hotter pools are also to be found nearby in Matamata and Te Aroha. The golf course looked good, and we were upgraded to the Chalet room which had a large bed (two singles pushed together) which was very comfortable. Quiet location ensured a good night's sleep. The Restaurant provided Euro food with no stand out dishes.
Lovely location in the countryside. Hotel is beautiful old building with fantastic hot springs. Breakfast and the dinners we had there were good quality. My only complaint while there for two days was that the hot water system was intermittently working, which meant the occasional lukewarm shower. The staff were apologetic, but there seemed no rush to fix it as it was long weekend, local plumbers were unavailable/or there was not appetite to pay long weekend call out fee. Despite the hot water, we had a lovely stay and would recommend/stay again.
We loved the area & the old hotel but there were a few glitches with the restaurant! ”
Great place to stay but the restaurant needs some attention in regard to bar ordering & no organisation. Brekky was ordinary but the chef was trying to work alone & there wasn’t much left for us at 9am.. in saying that there are new owners & I’m sure it will get better! Amazing hot spring pools!
Unique rural lodgings let down by "out of their depth" staff....”
Miles from anywhere with its own hot mineral springs for the exclusive use by Guests, the Okoroire Hotel was a great B&B venue for a relaxing night away from the "big smoke". A typical historic Kiwi country pub included a number of local characters proped up at the bar waiting for the Saturday night rugby game to commence with a couple of foul mouthed farm boys enjoying a beer (or five) out on the deck. Dinner in the dining room was a pleasant surprise (when it finally arrived) with large, country syle servings of good wholesome dishes ideal for sharing. It was just unfortunate that after finding our own menues and condiments and cutlery, the wait staff did not seem to know what was on the menu (or the specials' board) and then got completely confused as to who had ordered what and whether it was to be served in the bar or in the dining room. King size bed was very comfortable but ensuite bathroom was tiny ....you need to keep the sliding door open when cleaning your teeth !!!
Great find - pity about the food...”
This is a great find! The hot pools are just beautiful, surrounded by native bush and a stream. The room was clean and comfortable and the staff were friendly. The food served in the pub and restaurant was a real disappointment, basically frozen and / or deep fried. With all the amazing local produce on offer in the region there is a great opportunity to do something a lot better than what's currently on offer. I would eat in Tirau next time.
It's the 'sweet spot' of the Waikato ”
I would say it's a picturesque spot, enhanced by the awesome staff..... & I'd say, only go there if you're prepared to leave your daily life behind for a total relax & chilled out experience. Love the Okoroire Hotel ambience!
Beautiful older style hotel that still has character. Enjoyed having a beer and walk to hotpools followed by dinner. Breakfast with the room made it good value.
Lovely "Country Golf course & Pub" ”
The place is looking a little bit tired & dated, but it would appear that the old mineral pools have been well upgraded and perhaps that`s where money has been spent of recent times. The food was "okay" , but a "Shrimp Cocktail" with a dozen frozen smallish prawns and a teaspoon of cocktail sauce does not really qualify I`m afraid. However the salmon and sirloin for mains were both tasty, but the chips were unfortunately a little over-cooked. Breakfast buffet was "cheap/inexpensive" with only "sachet-type" fruit juices, no fruit to accompany only two cereals , plus "congee" & salad, plus hash browns, scrambled egg & was purportedly bacon, was more like "processed ham"- adequate but could have been easily a little more appetising with the addition of some fresh fruits juice/s, and fruit to accompany the cereal for not a lot more additional cost. The 9 hole golf course is very well maintained, and pleasant to walk around.
Beautiful place to stay, very helpful staff and cleaned rooms every day. It would have been nice to be able to cook in the family rooms / chalets, but would highly recommend and would certainly stay again.
Beautiful historic hotel lacking maintenance ”
Could tell that the hotel used to be a beautiful historic place. That said, it's quite sad to see that it is looking tired and lacking in maintenance. The key to the hot spring wasn't working. The key to the front porch wasn't working. The holder for the bathroom amenities was detached and left unattended. There seems to be lacking manpower too. At 2.30pm, room wasn't ready for check-in (check-in time was 2pm onwards); at 8.15am, breakfast wasn't ready (it was supposed to be ready by 8am). That said, surroundings were beautiful. And it's location was good for blue spring and hobitton movie set.
Like Fawlty Towers”
Okoroire Hotel is a beautiful historic destination with lots on offer. We loved our holiday in this quaint holiday spot. However, the staff were mediocre at best. We felt like guests were a nuisance, and the hotel lacked organisation. We stayed over Christmas and booked in for Christmas lunch but there was obviously not much fore-planning to ensure the day ran without a hitch...so it didn't. Giving thought to the smooth running of the accommodation would improve guests stay immensly-things like reliable wifi, consistant hot water, having enough crockery at meal times, and planning for events would be a great way to start. Most staff would do well to participate in some Hospitality Training Courses too. The standard response "we've run out" wears a bit thin after a while. Special mention to Vanessa and the Cook for their great service though-thank you both!
A pleasant stay, however disappointed that the bathroom basin was badly cracked with a hole in it,and obviously had been like this for a long time as the floor boards were very wet.not good presentation for a high tariff establishment.the staff and food were great.
This was our first stay at the Okoroire Hotel, but it definitely won’t be the last. Our room was clean, tidy and airy. The bar had great atmosphere and the bar food was exactly what we wanted. The staff were very friendly and informative. With activities like golf, tennis and soaking in the hot pools we couldn’t have wished for a better relaxing stay.
A couple away for a weekend break”
Was great for a relaxing weekend there was only one thing we wanted a massage but they couldn't find the key
This is a lovely place to relax and wind down. Wonderful hot pools. Cute, cozy and warm rooms. We slept so well. Good food and great service.
Thought the pools may have been a bit warmer but enjoyed my golf. Excellent food choices.
Lovely destination. Unique NZ historic lodging at its best.
Special Venue for Special Occasion”
We had a wonderful weekend with our extended family for a family reunion. The staff were friendly and helpful. Would recommend this wonderful place to recharge the battery or a family get together. The hot pools were wonderful to ease the pain of our aches and pains. Would certainly go again
