Okay but they know they are in Lonely Planet ”
Centre of town. Breakfast OK. Run by well-known mister Dong without whom the staff cannot take any decision (tour/trekking, exchange rate. ...) It is definitely not the cheapest hotel (30.000 for a beer) and "at first energetic" mister Dong was not too creative in helping us with trekking/tour. Eventually we by accident found Cho (see Cho Family) who arranged three days for us. Also mister Nghe (around the corner ) and his staff were very nice.
Helpful staff, great location ”
Helpful staff. Dong is always there to help and offer advice. Restaurant serves above average food, and the selection is one of the most extensive we’ve seen. Breakfast spread was simple, but delicious. If you’re there for the Sunday market you’d want to keep your stomach half empty anyway. Would stay again if visiting.
Centrally located, perfect for a stay in Bac Ha”
This is a great Hotel in central Bac Ha, close to the Sunday market and any other sights. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The rooms are nice, large and clean. The restaurant serves great food and many tour groups stop here for lunch. We recommend renting a motor bike to see more of the beautiful scenery around Bac Ha. The Sunday morning market definitely is a great experience.
Second time back to this hotel”
I booked 10 rooms at this hotel for my group of students and the check in was extremely smooth. They were ready with all the keys when we walked in the door. I do like that they have triple rooms in this hotel--one queen bed and two single beds (convenient for families). This is the second time we booked at this hotel, but the first time with a large group. I think this hotel is this most convenient to the Bac Ha market. The market is just down the street. The rooms are fine and the bathroom is clean. The bathroom is a toilet, sink, and a shower that sprays in the room (it has no shower curtain) so your toilet will get wet. My only problem with the rooms were getting some of the plugs to work. They had unplugged the tv and I could not get the plug to fit back in. I could have asked them to come up and do it for me, but we were much too busy. Some of the plugs we could use US plugs in, but others you needed an adapter. The front desk was great. There is a man and woman that run the hotel and they speak pretty good English. They were able to recommend a few restaurants in town, but their food was great too. Breakfast is only 45,000 dong and you get a fresh fruit plate; two choices between a fresh fruit smoothie, coffee, or/and tea; and for the entree you could choose from one of their pancake options (not pancake like in US, it is more of a French crepe), bread with eggs and other toppings, or noodle soup. I was happy with my bread and eggs--this was the freshest bread I have had in Vietnam. Overall, it was great staying here--but do not that there are a lot of stairs and they are pretty steep.
I will be back”
The hotel is located in the center, the staff are very friendly, the food is very delicious.
The room had a good size and a nice view. The bed was good, but the bathroom needs an update and there was a moldy smell in the room and the windows are not tight. For the price it was ok for one night.
Great help and knowledge”
the hotel manager was very helpful with booking bus tickets, motorbikes and taxis to visit the region. Do not miss the Sunday market which is huge and really fantastic. No market on a Monday but the Coc Ly market on a Tuesday is great as well although much smaller. Make sure you go out early to have dinner as the village is very quiet (Vietnam? Quiet? really? ) every day of the week except Sunday. Great region to visit. Certainly much less touristy than Sapa. Much better value if you have to choose between the two. Also in winter weather tends to be less rainy in Bac Ha than Sapa.
It is not a 5 star resort hotel but for a small town hotel (only about 20kKs from the Chinese border) up in the mountains of north Vietnam where we went to see an amazing Sunday market it was fine. The hotel was very clean, everything worked, the staff were friendly and very helpful and the food was good. Great atmosphere and a visit to Bac Ha was a definite highlight to our overall trip.
No need to stay in Bac Ha on Saturday before market on Sunday”
Clean hotel. Comfortable room. Good location. No TV and terrible internet. Staff was rude. Checkout is at 9am (sorry, but that's a new one on me), so if you plan to go to the market, you won't be able to return to your room to freshen up. (Even 10am would be an acceptable check out time.) I sat across the street drinking a coffee at 9:45 watching mini vans with tourists from Sapa checking in to this hotel, so it seems that they are double dipping on the Sunday market crowd. Better to stay in Sapa, make a day trip.
A fantastic clean spacious courteous place to stay with great hosts. Would recommend this to all”
Great hosts. Good food. Safe helpful with an excellent tour into the back country. Could have stayed to explore the are longer. Huge recommendation to tour guides who gave us a valuable insight into this community.
one night stay for the sunday market”
The hotel was convenient to the sunday Bac Ha market and to local buses. The hotel has a policy of keeping your passport until you check out even though I was promised it would be given back to me within hours. Twice, the manager always had some excuse not to return my passport because he had to copy it or had to share it with the local police. My hotel bill was prepaid via Agoda so payment should not have been an issue. I've been to Vietnam three times in eight years and never had a hotel keep my passport for longer than an hour. When I mentioned this, the manager got very hostile and combative. He even followed me out of the hotel twice to continue his style of intimidation and had the nerve to call me a "Bad Man" and held his cellphone up to video our conversation. I would never stay at this hotel ever again as there are friendlier and cheaper options up or down the block. This guy is like Seinfeld's Soup Kitchen Nazi in a small town bellhop uniform.
Great location in an unhurried town.”
I recommend Bac Ha over Sapa as I found it easier to trek out alone and enjoy the nearby villages and countryside. The hotel was a great base to return to and the welcome was warm and interested. I stayed 4 nights and at first it was quite cold but rooms have heating and loads of hot water. On Sundays the whole place becomes manic with the market but by staying here you can enjoy a few hours of the market before the tour buses arrive. One caution if you are looking at this hotel on Agoda the facilities listed, steam room etc. do not exist! I was not able to establish why!!?? If you want a trekking or motorbike tour English speaking guide I recommend Za, she can be booked through the hotel.
Best place in town ”
Please note that this is by no means a five star hotel, but when you consider where you are and what else is around, this place is a winner for sure! Hotel is nothing fancy but considering where you are (northern Vietnam on the border with China) it was completely adequate and the best around from what I saw. Rooms were large, clean, and bright. Mr Dong who works the reception desk was a wealth of information and very helpful arranging outings and transportation on to your next location. Food was good, better if you order a few times and know what you like/don't like, and the breakfast that came with the room was plentiful and you had a nice choice of options. Not sure you are going to get anything better in Bac Ha seeing as how there are very few tourists there except for Sundays. The common area on the first floor had a really nice vibe with the various travelers that were hanging out there. Bac Ha market is right around the corner every Sunday morning. Good launching place for outings to local villages, local markets other than Bac Ha, home-stays, trekking around the mountains, or heading further northeast to more remote areas of Vietnam. We hooked up with a lovely tour guide from experience-vietnam who was fantastic and really allowed us to get to experience the local culture. Stay here and get a guide for a day or two, you wont regret it!
One night stay in Bac Ha”
Overall good but very short. After no sleep on the plane and 3 hours sleep on the night us to Sapa very happy to find a nice comfortable room. As I booked the night before I had to get a triple room just for myself. The only dark point power cuts would let me hardly use their wifi which I needed and paid for. Personnel experienced and good the manager at reception seem a bit busy but still very nice. I would recommend this place just book ahead to have the room that fits your requirements in terms of number of persons.
A Good Choice”
This is probably the best place to stay in Bac Ha. Firstly this place is likely to be unpopular with tour groups as the rooms are very different, they are equivalent in lots of ways but sufficiently quirky to get tour groups arguing 'they got a better room than me' no matter what the allocation, so if possible ask to choose your room. Secondly Bac Ha is not a gourmet destination, so don't expect brilliant and innovative cuisine. The hot pot here, whilst not a meal to die for is sufficiently above par and the rest of the food beats par for Bac Ha. What is superb about this hotel is the attention to provide the very best service. Their Wednesday tour to a market near the Chinese border is very interesting. Good tourist advice is provided and the hastily drawn sketch maps are surprisingly efficient should you go for a country walk to nearby villages they will help you avoid getting lost and trudging up the wrong hill. Thoroughly recommended.
Best place to stay in Bac Ha”
I spent 3 nights here and had a fantastic time. I was greeted with a name sign when I arrived. The manager was very friendly, spoke good English and was helpful with maps and advice. The room was very comfortable and quiet at night. The internet was great with no problems. The shower had hot water. There was breakfast included and it was great. They offered tea, juice, fruit and a choice of breakfast dishes. I ate lunch and dinner here and found the food and quality to be excellent. You can rent a motorbike from them to visit nearby markets. Lastly, I mistakenly left my credit card upon check out. The manager(Tomz) knew where I was staying next and delivered the card to my next stay without me calling him about the missing card. You will enjoy the stay here and I highly recommend this hotel.
Like being amongst friends!”
We could not fault the hotel or staff in any way. Everyone was so very friendly, smily and helpful. We were given terrific advice about walks around the town and prices we could expect to pay. For example, we were told that beers would be 15-25,000 dong (depending on size and brand). This was reassuring to us, so that we didn't feel we were being over-charged anywhere. We had been scammed at the bus station in Lao Cai when we wanted a bus to Bac Ha. A conductor aggressively stood in our way, grabbed our bag and almost forced us on to a bus demanding 500,000 dong for the 2 of us. This is a common scam. Our advice is to be warned and step around the horrible man, the true cost should be 60,000 dong each. Don't pay the conductor, pay the driver. So back to the story - the manager at Ngan Nga Bac Ha arranged our return bus to Lao Cai and paid the driver on our behalf. Can't thank him enough!!!
Great Accommodation in Bac Ha”
I can highly reccommend the Ngan Nga Bac Ha Hotel. My wife and I stayed there for 2 nights in August 2015. Staff are really friendly. Mr Dong, the manager couldn`t do enough for us. We were very welcomed and nothing was too much trouble for him or the staff. Very close to the Sunday markets.
Very central location and great staff”
Upon arrival by bus from LaoCai which stopped directly in front of the hotel, we were already expected with our name on a sheet of paper. Check-in was extremely fast and we were offered some really nice ginger tea free of charge while waiting of the room to be ready. Since my wife was not too well, they prrovided us with a thermal bottle of hot water to make hot tea and the next morning, they even delivered the chosen breakfast directly to the room. All in all a very nice experience and absolutely worth the money.
