An experience of Nikko's more recent history”
The hotel is in a perfect location to easily explore Nikko's magnificent temples and shrines. The staff were always helpful, professional and delighful, and the room was enormous. I definitely recommend the hotel for other travellers.

A Special Treat to Us”
The historic value of this hotel is significant. Its location is second to none. We chose an upgraded room and were pleased. The staff truly understand and offer impeccable service. Breakfast was very good. However, it is quite expensive, and we were there in the off season. We chose not to eat dinner at the hotel due to its cost. There is a Great Steakhouse 50 meters away so no problem. Yes we recommend the steakhouse and we are from Alberta.

Historical experience in a great location! ”
While some parts of the hotel are a little dated and could use some care, it was still a place I would recommend for the experience. Staying in one of the oldest hotels in Japan, you can learn about all of the famous people who have stayed there and get a sense of what Nikko was like in its prime. The location is great - right before the famous bridge, so only about a 15 minute walk to the entrance of the Toshogu Shrine. The service was impeccable and the hotel offers a free shuttle from the train station - although it does not run continuously so check the time schedule on the website. The room was a little dated in terms of decor, but the large windows overlooking gorgeous forests made up for it. We booked with breakfast and it was worth it - again, great service and continental cuisine. The Japanese breakfast costs an extra 600 yen even if you book breakfast. We also went to the Whisky Bar which was empty for the most part but still a great setting.

Service and history of a bygone age”
Step back in time at the Nikko Kanaya. All staff in black and white uniforms deliver impeccable service reminiscent of a bygone era. It’s near all the amazing world heritage temples and shrines. Great experience and I wish we could have stayed longer.

Nikkō Stay”
Enjoy my stay at the legendary Kanaya Hotel. I was very interested in the history of the hotel and the staff explained quite a bit. Had only breakfast was just right for a light breakfast. And reasonable. Did not have dinner in the hotel as we wanted sushi and local food. Rooms were fairly spacious but a little old. But can’t complain it’s been there fo over 100 years. The only thing I was disappointed was not hot spring (ofuro) and the Beautiful bar Was closed. May because of Covid19. Before leaving it was raining so I asked the staff for any umbrellas, they were kind enough to give us 2. Will come back when they are Fully open! Great location and staff!

Very nice”
Hotel was great and i loved the old room. The price was great too. Would definitely stay again at that price. View was beautiful from the window. The breakfast was a little high priced and unsatisfying with only two eggs (any way you want) and a tiny amount of ham. So i loaded up on toast which they brought extra at no charge thankfully. It was also COVID times when i was there so just about every restaurant in town closed at 5pm. No joking. The steak restaurant was open till 7:30 though and was really good and not too over priced. All in all a great stay.

Great location ”
The hotel is in a great location and the staff are very kind. The Wi-Fi was not very good. I tried to stream videos and make Skype calls and the internet was very very slow.

Good experience ”
It is well know as a traditional and historical hotel in Nikko area. We stayed 1 night only in a separate building. The building and room are very old and historical, and we enjoyed the very tasteful and old fashion atmosphere. We loved it. Bat, we have to go up to the 3rd floor room using stairs every time (No elevator!).

A fading beauty in the best Nikko location”
We have really enjoyed our 2 nights stay here but this hotel may not be for everyone. If you like to stay in historical places this place is for you. It is a bit faded. Pros: Scheduled hotel shuttle bus from / to the station (even of you miss it the local bus stops near the hotel); Nice friendly staff; Lovely historical feel of the common areas; great views. LOCATION - very close to the main attractions - you can't get closer. Nice breakfast - go for the Japanese breakfast rather than Western (worth the extra payment); Large room with great view (we stayed in superior double); Access at discount price to the onsen at the other Kanaya hotel located on the lake - catch their shuttle there - 30-40 min very scenic drive. The onsen was great and not crowded. You can also catch a public bus there. We had dinner at the steak house right outside the hotel - it was excellent. Make sure to try the local Nikko mushroom. Note - Nikko is dead after 8pm and all restaurants are closed. Try Bar de Nikko for a meal one night - 5 min walk from the hotel, run by one men - excellent food and friendly. Cons: it is expensive; bathrooms are dated and toiletries are basic for the hotel of this ranking (packets of shampoo that are impossible to open with wet hands); no onsen on premises (but see above). When booking select the room with a view. A friend travelling with us chose "room allocated on arrival" that wasn't that much cheaper - and ended up looking at the roof with air-conditioning. Restaurants at the hotel are very expensive. No non-smoking rooms (not uncommon for Japan). Having said all that we would stay here again.

My wife and I had spent our honeymoon night at this lovely and historic hotel -- the first Western style hotel in Japan. At 81 we wished to repeat the magnificent evening we had spent 58 years ago. Al”
Besides the pleasure of the hotel itself, its location provides great access to the shrines of the Tokugawa Shogunate and the famous Kegon Falls. Do be prepared to walk and that is walk uphill and downhill. It is a major tourist attraction so be prepared for fellow travelers. Many of the stairs around the shrines do not have railings, so a walking stick for the folks over 80 is not a bad idea. Nikko offers so much history and getting there only takes two hours by train. Compare with Kyoto, it can be done in two days and would be more reasonable.

great”
Within walking distance to shrines. Be sure you get a good room, some are better than others. We stayed in room 18 in the original building, and it was great, large, sitting area, modern. The hotel itself is old, but very atmospheric. We had the meal plan, and the breakfast and dinner were excellent!!!! Service was wonderful, woman at the front wrote out in English all the directions to the shrines. Highly recommended.

Exceptional”
The hotel is an historic one in a very good location to the temples and shrines and close to a bus stop if you are planning on visiting Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji by bus. The staff is excellent--the waiter in the dining room was very helpful in accommodating my husband's dietary restrictions.

the hotel is too old”
the hotel is quite old meaning that the carpets are very dusty. the toilet is quite up to date. The room does not smell and it is quite large. Nevertheless, it still use old steam heater instead of a more modern one. The breakfast is quite plain. It is possible to access the hotel by shuttle bus from JR Nikko or Tobu Nikko and get off at stop 7.
