Great Hotel in a Great Location”

The location is very good! Walking distance to the heritage sites and short distance from the Nikko Tobu and JR stations, if you are coming from Tokyo. Taxi from Nikko Tobu is just around 1000 yen. The food for breakfast and dinner are all superb! Everyone in the hotel are very nice and helpful. The onsen is great! Note though that tattooed guest can only access the onsen from 9PM onwards, but can book the family bath if they want to bathe before those times.

Good in value ”

Within 600 hkd included onsen, breakfast and dinner for 1 person, quite a good deal. Only something not the best, which is the location is not directly close to bus station, which need around 8 mins walk up hill, but they offer shuttle bus when i leave the hotel. Also in the room no shower facilities, however i go onsen anyway after shower, so it is ok, can do the showers in the onsen area.

A beautiful room in the best location”

The room was beautiful. The futon was so comfortable and the entire room was pristine. It's in the BEST location. Right near the shrines and temple. It was magical. And the staff are very kind.

Good”

Very cheap price, good food for both meals, simple and comfortable atmosphere. Only has a shower room, no bathtub as shown in the picture. The hotel is located near a temple, very quiet and dark at night. It's tiring to walk up the hill after getting off the bus at Shinkie Bridge, so I recommend taking a taxi. The hotel provides a shuttle to the station for the return trip.

Hotel location is great. It is close to the all the heritage site seeing locations. Staff is very nice and helpful. The lady provided us a map showing all walking distances to all heritage locations. We dropped off our luggage in the morning and tour around the area. When we were back around 4pm, the room is ready and our luggage is already in our room. Japanese kaiseki dinner and breakfast were good experience. Onsen is great. The hotel also provides shuttle service to the train station.

Great hotel, great staff, deceptive location”

Incredibly attentive staff, excellent outdoors onsen, good way to experience traditional Japanese inn

We were at Nikko Tokanso over the Christmas period, and were surprised and very pleased that the staff brought Christmas cakes and tea over to help us celebrate the holidays. The 1000 yen breakfast add-on is well worth the cost, particularly if you opt for the Japanese menu. The outdoor onsen is small, but as the opening hours are from 4 in the morning until midnight or so, we were never crowded. The staff were attentive, handing us pocket warmers whenever we left in the morning to go out for walks, and the hotel is close to the town so catching buses was easy, but it's also close to the river, the Shinkyo bridge and the world heritage shrines Nikko is famous for. The only complaint is that it's not mentioned that from the nearest bus stop to the hotel is quiet a steep slope you have no choice but to climb up and down to get anywhere. One of our party members has a knee condition, and knowing about the incline beforehand would have been nice. Aside from that, though, a highly reccommended, lovely little hotel with great staff and fantastic experience of a Japanese inn without breaking the budget.

Perfect Balance”

My wife and I are frequent visitors to Japan from America. This visit we brought two of our adult children to show them around. Because of some passport problems we had to spend most of our time in Tokyo, and our two days in Nikko was our only chance to show them Traditional Ryokan Japan. Tokanso provided it all and made the whole trip a smashing success. The Onsen, Japanese-type rooms, location, décor, convenience to the sights, shuttle service back to the station with snow gently falling, and an attentive staff all contributed. The crowning touch was the two breakfasts, which were totally over the top and will never be forgotten by any of us. I highly recommend Tokanso to anyone, and we would happily stay there again. The price was quite modest, considering all it had to offer.

Relaxing, beautiful, peaceful and traditional”

1. Japanese style rooms 2. Onsen 3. Japanese breakfast

Our stay at the Nikko Tokanso Hotel was very nice! Really the only trouble we had was finding the exact hotel. It was a little strange because we had to go through another hotel to get to our hotel. Other than that, this hotel (ryokan) was peaceful, surrounded by beauty, very traditional, and foreign friendly. Worth every penny!

Very nice ryokan with onsen”

Onsen, nice clerks, japanese rooms

The stay at Tokanso Hotel was a real bit of heaven : large rooms (for a Japanese standard of course) with futon, set ready for the tea when back from the temple hopping in Nikko, onsen to relax, ... And the people there where very nice and helpful. For the price, I don't think you find find a better quality...

Excellent ryokan with friendly staff”

We stayed for 2 nights at Nikko Tokanso. Hot spring is free and private hot spring can be booked for free if you are shy to be in public bath. The breakfast and dinner were excellent. They are many choices but... one thing is the dinner portion is too much! But that means it totally worth it! :)

Everyone was treated like a VIP!”

Friendly and attentive staff; delicious food; good location!

The hotel staff did a good job from the moment we arrived until the moment we left the hotel. They gave us all the information we needed during our stay. From restaurants, tourist spots and special events around Nikko. The spa was so relaxing and the yukata robes gave us the whole onsen experience. We will definitely come back and recommend this hotel to friends and family who are looking for a Nikko onsen experience that is well worth the budget!

Very good”

Great experience, classical Ryokan for reasonable price. The place is a bit old, however everything is as it should be and food is fantastic, so is staf attendence and friendliness. Nice Onzen in the hotel. Nicely situated close to the sights in Nikko, but a bit far from central Nikko, still in walking distance

Great Value Ryokan”

Comfortable and clean with excellent food

Having experienced a few traditional Japanese hotels before we were very impressed at the value offered here. Not the most luxurious rooms but certainly the most comfortable futons! Spotlessly clean throughout. The onsen looked like it was new unlike the rest of the hotel. You need to give a time for meals and have the choice of western or traditional Japanese food all of which looked wonderful albeit with some odd choices for western breakfast! A short cab ride from the station and a short walk to World Heritage Nikko attractions make this a great local style option providing you like Japanese cuisine. Food was lovely and the staff did their best to help you enjoy the experience. I would return in a heartbeat. Travel tip - take the local bus to Lake Chuzenji and back - amazing experience!

Welcoming, traditional facilities, good value”

An affordable Japanese ryokan experience, relaxing onsen, convenient for the sights

The hotel hides away behind its Japanese nameboard, but once you find it you are warmly welcomed. The Japanese-style rooms are simple but quite comfortable enough, and the onsen (collective baths) clean and relaxing. Breakfast is Japanese only - elegantly presented but a bit exotic for some tastes. The temples of Nikko are an easy walk away down leafy lanes.

Clean rooms with slight difficulty in English”

A must-go when you visit Nikko. Hotel cannot be recognized by Google Maps for some reason, but this is beside the Toshogu Shrine. Staff was very helpful, though with little bit of language barrier. Breakfast was good. Didn’t get to try the Onsen. Maybe next time! Highly recommended.

Excellent. It was a Ryokan or family hotel ”

Attention of staff, confort and location

It was excellent. we lived like the japanese people experiencing sleeping on futon over a tatami, ate japanese typical breakfast, and were at a walking distance of the majos attractions. we would definitely recommend this hotel and if back to Nikko, this would be our option.
