Wat reizigers zeggen over Nakhon Si Thammarat

Meer over Nakhon Si Thammarat

Located in Southern Thailand, the city of Nakhon Si Thammarat is the capital of the province of the same name. One of Thailand's oldest cities, the city's origins date back to very ancient times and therefore aren’t quite clear, but it’s religious and historical significance can’t be ignored. The province is served by Nakhon Si Thammarat Airport, which hosts domestic flights from major cities such as Bangkok and Phuket, among others.

Nakhon Si Thammarat is home to Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan, a temple that holds a very high significance in the Buddhist religion, containing a fragment of the Buddha’s tooth relic.

Nakhon Si Thammarat was once a walled city, and while most of its ramparts are now gone, the northern gate and a portion of the wall still stand. The wall is just one reminder of the city's heritage; while the temple and its reclining Buddha statue are two more beautiful holdovers of old Siam.

The city is comprised of an Old Town – inside the gate – and a newer, more modern urban development with shops, schools, hotels and Walailak University, Thailand's largest university.

Outside town, the beaches of the province attract a steady flow of travelers. Up the coast from Nakhon Si Thammarat is the lazy fishing village of Sichon and its picturesque beaches, while even further north is the resort area of Khanom.

There’s a lot more to see and do in Nakhon Si Thammarat, and the best way to discover what else this city has to offer in terms of attractions, landmarks, and hotels is by exploring the interactive map on this page.
