Phitsanulok has played an important role in the history of Thailand. During the Sukhothai and Ayutthaya eras, Phitsanulok was a powerful and prosperous city. Today, this sleepy city is mainly a base for the Royal Thai Army. Phitsanulok's most famous temple is Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat, an intricately decorated temple housing a 700-year-old gold sculpture of Buddha.
Life in Phitsanulok is very much centered around the river Nan, and one of the biggest annual events is a dragon boat race which takes place in October.
