Meer over Sandakan
The city of Sandakan is located in Malaysia’s Sabah State, once serving an important trade port and former capital of North Borneo under the British. Now, the city is a small coastal town with more locals than there are international tourists, a great place to relax and enjoy a calm vacation far enough away from the hustle and bustle of Malaysia’s bigger cities.
Sandakan is best accessed by air, as Sandakan Airport connects the city to the major cities in Malaysia as well as connecting flights to other regional cities. Once in the city, getting around is easily done either on foot, as it’s a small town, or by the local taxi system.
Most famously, Sandakan is home to the Orangutan Sanctuary at the Sepilok Forest Reserve. It’s the perfect place to spend an afternoon walking among the Orangutans, and is an especially great destination for those traveling with children. Hotels near the Organgutan Sanctuary range from luxury properties to small guesthouses, so travelers are bound to find the perfect destination to fit their needs.
The St Michael and All Angels Church was built in this city in the 19th century, and is therefore one of the oldest buildings in the state. More importantly, this church was the only building to remain standing after the atrocities of World War II. It is therefore a very popular tourist destination, and it’s convenient to see this and the surrounding areas from accommodations in the Sandakan city center.
