I was shocked by the hotel prices in POM. However, the hotel was very clean, secure, and the food was good. The staff was very helpful. Our room had a somewhat moldy smell, but it was otherwise very comfortable.

Avoid eating at the Holiday Inn Kopi Haus Restaurant ”

Over the past two years, I have been a regular guest at the Holiday Inn Express in Port Moresby, and often eat at the Holiday Inn Kopi Haus restaurant. I have always found the food quality to be poor, but on my most recent stay, I was particularly disappointed. I was served a piece of fish that was so rubbery that I could not cut through it with a knife. This fish appeared to be old and defrosted, not the fresh Barramundi that I had ordered from the menu. Concerned about food poisoning, I asked for a replacement meal. The wait staff, who were very kind and helpful, suggested that I might order the Catch of the Day instead. You would assume that the "catch of the day" comes fresh, however, when it arrived at my table, it was the same, rubbery old fish, coated in batter. The price of the meals at Kopi Haus is exorbitant, equivalent to what you would pay for meal in a decent restaurant in Brisbane, so I would expect much higher food standards. In my travels to the provinces in Papua New Guinea, I have always found it easy to find delicious, fresh and cheap local seafood at markets and local food stalls, so I simply don't understand why the quality of the meals at the Holiday Inn is so poor. It is clear that the restaurant is cutting costs, while guests continue to pay premium price. The customer service at the hotel itself is wonderful, and the staff are lovely, so I will happily stay there again on my next visit to Port Moresby, however, I will not risk food poisoning or wasting my money at the Kopi Haus restaurant again, and I suggest that others avoid it also until standards are dramatically improved.
