NGH great place ”
I pass through Winton a couple of times a year and this was my first stay at the North Gregory Hotel (NGH). A most interesting deco, mixed 40s/50s/60's art deco, including cut glass features. Most trips I'm passing during the day but this time I booked a room and arrived early afternoon and spent the rest of the day wandering around town as a huge storm brewed in the south east. Got some great pictures. People in the opal shops were very friendly, informative and personable. Next time I'll make it a couple of days, use the historic NGH as a base, checking out Opalton and other local enviors.
historical Winton”
North Gregory Hotel in Winton - Gregory was an explorer in the gov't admin area became known as "Gregory". One of the receptionists loves the poem "Invictus" which most of us have heard but don't recognize. Very family-friendly. Meals in the outdoors "Beer Garden" are great.
Great Country Hotel in Art Deco style”
Stayed 1 night (Saturday) and had a wonderful evening with live music and Banjo Patterson poetry with style entertainment. Food was also great. Great Art Deco style throughout the hotel located in the main street with free parking and wifi. Staff were excellent. Only place to stay when in Winton!
refeshing and strange to boot!”
This is my preferred accommodations when in Winton. Has an unusual art-deco interior and fittings. The staff are attentive and helpful. It is located in the centre of town, there is plenty of parking both front and back. The restaurant is standard although the potions are ample and not a fancy menu, but what the offer they do well. I will certainly stay again.
tops”
There was a small problem with my Agoda booking but this was sorted quickly by the manager calling Agoda. The manager was professional and polite in the process. I have also stayed at the North Gregory before,it is central to amenities, bakery, and tourist information centre. There is an art-deco theme throughout, which is an interesting aside.
Grand Old Lady”
What a History the NGH Has. She is a bit tired now and needs a bit of work to bring her back to scratch. I loved the Main Foyer and Staircase. The formal dinning Room looked great. It was easy to forgive those little things that were apparent in need of an update but so easy to forgive. It felt like a trip back in time and I loved it. The Staff were great, helpful and courteous. Winton proved to be a friendly place and the locals have time to talk. Would stay there again no worries.
Very good”
Nice old hotel in art deco style with an interesting history. Probably the nicest place to stay in Winton. Comfortable room , but the decor was a bit tired. Perhaps our room hadn't been refurbished yet. We were unable to try the restaurant as it was closed for a private function. The aircon worked well and if it hadn't been so hot it would have been nice to sit out on the verandah.
Great place to stay in the outback”
Staying at this Art Deco style hotel is an experience in itself. A special daily performance by Greg North of his rendition of the life and works of Banjo Paterson are the icing-on-the-cake. This place is well worth a stay.
Music, Poetry and fresh country food!”
You can sometimes get a good deal on a particular booking site but not on others. So compare before you book. When we were there they had the poetry of Banjo Paterson and live music which was great.
my choice when in Winton”
I travel a lot, sometimes for work and sometimes for leisure. Whatever the purpose I prefer at NGH. The staff are attentive, the rooms clean, the meals are good and plentiful and I enjoy the art-deco ambiance. Gives the place an unusual strangeness, make a great location for a thriller. An oasis in the middle of no where. First visitor do yourself a favour, and I am sure if you stay there once, you will return.
An absolute gem in Winton!”
We had to settle for one night in a deluxe queen room but would rather have had two. What a beautiful historical building with high ceilings and a grand foyer with plush furniture. Features from the Art Deco period of the 1930's are everywhere from the staircase to glorious lampshade in our bedroom. The food was also very good. A highlight for us was the 5.30 p.m event with a bush poet and celebrations of the works of Banjo Patterson. Totally mesmerising; loved it!
You get a clean basic room with aircon and bathroom”
Lots of history within the hotel. If travelling in the warmer months dont turn the aircon off when you leave the room.
stay overnight ”
I usually only stay 1 night but have for up to a few days when I include a little fossicking out at Opalton. The drive in the morning is West, so the sun is behind, and again the sun is behind on the way back to town. Be warned, it is an unsealed road, a true test of driving skill. Be aware of wildlife (and cattle). Do not be on this road at night. And the NGH is a great place to freshen up.
Budget accommodation”
Great location. Good facilities. Nice to get a twin room for about 100 dollars a room. Staff were brilliant. Bathrooms are dated but clean. Beds are comfortable.
Exceptional”
Over priced Canadion Club cans. Stairway to accomodation.
Covers basic needs, nothing fancy”
Room security was not great, very basic latch on the main door, and hole where the original (mortice?) lock was, for anyone to look through. The other door out to the communal balcony and courtyard area was secured by a rather shaky little bolt between the two halves, could easily be pushed or pulled open. Complete lack of any horizontal surface to put your stuff down on, other than the tea/coffee making tray area. The fittings were OK. We did not make use of the dining there so can't comment on that.
Great Location”
Excellent location in the centre of town. Historic building ( 1955). Room (double) was large with all facilities ( ensuite, small fridge and air conditioning) but showing its age. Good shared verandah. Convenient for the live music often on in the pub ( but they didn't run the music past 8:30 pm when we were there). Go there for a true taste of Australiana rather than modern rooms.
Excellent”
A good stay was marred by the reception failing to accept that the accommodation was already paid. The charge was added to the credit card resulting in a duplicated payment which was not addressed by reception when challenged 2 days later. When the situation was reported to Agoda they were very quick to rectify the error and I congratulate them for their quick response.
Loved the retro theme. The meals better priced than other hotels in town. Very helpful staff.”
Small family room but lovely large covered balcony. Retro a great look.
Good place but don't expect the Ritz!”
Dated daggy rooms but clean enough. Good beds and bedding. Outside verandah a bonus. I asked for a toaster and got one. Check your room out before you take a key. Great restaurant with $15 specials every night. Outdoor beer 'garden' a bonus.
