“Great city centre hotel”
Like all hotels in Liverpool, this one's expensive if you don't book months in advance. We booked 4 months in advance and got a family room for 4 for around *** per night for new years eve. I believe it went up to *** per night on the day we arrived, glad we booked in advance. Rooms are clean and well kept, beds are comfy and bathroom was stocked with enough clean towels for 4. With 4 people in a family room it's still roomy enough. TV isn't great, only gut terrestrial so bring a device for your young ones to watch their shows. The shampoo is like paint stripper - bring your own, we did. Shower gel is fine. Fridge is small but worked and good for drinks and snacks. Cupboard was roomy and had an iron and a safe. View - internal courtyard - depressing. Ask for a street view. Pool - 'cold' or 'refreshing' depends on your take, we went in winter so fair enough. It's a nice pool, they don't allow it to be over booked so there's space to stretch out. Too much chlorine though, gave my wife a rash, if you have sensitive skin, or worse a skin condition then best to avoid. My 9 year old has a blast in the pool. Sauna - nice, clean hot and a compact size but as it's limited booking it's not overbooked. Private changing rooms and showers - good for families. Gym - didn't use but looked good Breakfast - I've stayed at many 5 star hotels in the UK for work - this has the BEST breakfast I've ever had in a UK hotel. Sausages were cooked to perfection, high quality meat and tasty. The baked beans, I've never tasted so good... The chef must have a secret sauce as quite honestly they were divine. Eggs and Mushrooms are high quality and super tasty. Fruit was good, cereal selection and Continental selection all good etc Excellent selection of drinks, teas coffees, juices, alternate milks and a gluten free section of cereals, milk, fruits and pastries. As a tea snob I get annoyed by crappy hot water for tea, the hot water was filtered and couldn't taste any tap water. The hotel has its own automatic pancake maker which blew our minds. All the kids were queuing up to get fresh crepes. The honey and Nutella dispensers were 5 star. Didn't want to leave the breakfast buffet and was worth the hotel booking alone. Really nice ambience and comfortable seats etc. We had a drink in the same bar/restaurant on new years eve... For some reason they were showing darts not playing music at 9.30pm. Strange choice but staff seemed overworked, we saw the same overworked barman serving breakfast the next morning on new years day. Drinks were good though. No complaints. All in all an excellent stay, lots of fans staying for the match, local and international. A few German's present, you can tell they're German because they stare at you. Which is off putting when your trying to eat a sausage at 7.45am on new years day. But harmless I guess, just avoid eye contact, don't encourage them. Overall the guests are well mannered with no crazy shenanigans like you get at a *** or ***. We'd stay again for the same price.
