A great "Hutong" experience
The hotel staff is great and very informative to the tourists. The service is def. one of its biggest features.

Location, attention to detail, athmosphere
It's like being an ambassador for a western kingdom being posted at the court of the emperor Qianlong. The breakfast needs thorough rethinking though - everything else is a bliss.

Fine hutong getaway - great location
Location, free breakfast, decent room comfort for price
We stayed here over a weekend in late November, and the rooms were warm and very comfortable. The beds were a bit ahrd, but all in all the room was nice, and the bathrooms were very clean. the staff was friendly, and there was a very decent free breakfast included in our room price. I thought the price was good value for the money. Mainly it is a great location, about 15 minutes walking from Nanluoguxiang. it is surrounded by good food, nice bars, and a cool disco called Dada for the late night lovers. At night it was quiet and peaceful. The living area was a nice place to surf the free wifi, and chill over a cup of tea. I would stay again.

bad area and bad H O T E L
It is located in back alley of beijing. Driver could not find it. Had to walk thru alley ways to get to van because too small to drive down alley to get to us. Had to walk 20 minutes to Bell Tower for driver to pick us up for tours. Saw piles of garbage in street, Dirty bikes laying all aroound. Child brushing his teeth in dirty puddle in street. Child no bottoms on with slit underneath so he can relieve himself at any time in street. Very very poor side of Beijing. Had to walk thru people just sitting around in street eating food. For the 4 nights we stayed there was unbearable. Could not wait to leave especially staying with my son and grandson. No lock on door. Mold in shower on floor and walls, TV did not work at all. A/C not working. Kids playing in lobby all hours of night. Rooms were surrounding lobby which advertisement shows a picture of. Girls played instruments to 12:00Am EVERY NIGHT. Breakfast was to 7:15am so we could not have anything because we had to walk to Drum Tower to be picked up for tour. Nothing before that time. So we had no breakfast for the 4 days we stayed there. No stores for breakfast. I would never recommend this H O T E L to anyone. If you come to Beijing stay away from HUTONG area. Everyone that we talked to on the tours we took said the same. Try and get out of there. But where are we going to go? Had no idea that area was that bad. Stay away

Ideal for sightseeing, but definitely not 4*
Perfectly located and friendly and helpful staff
We just returned from staying at the Old Beijing Square Hotel. Our taxi from the airport had some trouble finding the hotel, but after asking a local for some directions we eventually tracked it down. We were 2 couples and stayed in the Family Garden Rooms, which were quite spacious. I asked for 2 quiet rooms but the hotel staff nonetheless put us directly next to the main entrance area where everyone has breakfast. The noise was a bit much in the mornings and unfortunately did disturb us relatively early. The location of the hotel is great - the hutongs around the hotel are very busy and loud but once you walk into the hotel area it's like an oasis and really very quiet and relaxing. The staff were very friendly and helpful and even gave one of our party a small present for his birthday, which was very thoughtful. The hotel is rated as a 4 star establishment, but I would definitely say it's more at the lower end of 3 stars. Our room was not clean at all! There were cobwebs on the walls, we found clumps of long hair on the floor and the breakfast tables were NEVER wiped between servings. Our main shower head had a big hole in it resulting in water streaming out of it, so we had to use the smaller handheld shower head. The toiletries were also not changed before we arrived, so we had half used shampoo and shower gel. The drainage in the shower was also very poor and the toilet area was flooded every time we had a shower. Breakfast was included in our rate, but it was incredibly basic. You're allowed to pick either a coffee or orange juice, not both! Also, they could really do with offering some fruit salad...
