Old City hotels & places to stay

Staffs were really helpful and made our trip a lot more hospitality. Thank you so much for everyone kindness. Location is the prime. We enjoyed the view of the Jedi Luang, the biggest temple in the old city. There was the walking night market in front of the hotel on Sunday. We just loved it. We just walked and explored the old city right off the hotel doors. The hotel facilities are amazing. We planed to do the outside stuffs for the whole trip but then we just had to spend the 1 whole day in the hotel. The pool is wonderful, the thai house in the middle of the hotel is amazing. I felt like i was the king of Chiang Mai. Just above and beyond

Our experience with Hotel De Naga has been terrific in the 5-night stay. Firstly, great location as it is on the edge of the Old City, so you can walk around at all times. Plenty of taxis available since it is right next to the main ring street circling the old city. You may want to ask drivers to drop you off at the street corner since the hotel is located at the end of a one-way street. Service was prompt at all times. Staff members were very friendly and helpful. Special thanks to the waiter at the restaurant who kept an eye on our left-behind property, and caught us the next morning returning it! Decor in lobby and rooms are modern and artsy with an oriental touch. The standard double rooms are not as big in comparison to Thai resorts, yet tastefully decorated and clean. Breakfast was very decent with a good variety of bread and Thai food. Pool is slightly small and exposed as it is in the middle of the hotel backyard, yet decent enough for a city boutique hotel. The only minus was the internet - wifi reception in guest room was poor and generally slow. We would greatly recommend this hotel to travellers looking for a relaxing experience and enjoy casual explorations in the old city at a fair price.

We booked the Roseate Hotel for 2 nights and upon arrival wanted to stay for our full 5 nights in Chiang Mai but they were booked a couple other nights. This hotel was our best experience and value for money by far. We got a room upgrade simply because they had it available. The only thing it didn't include which most other hotels did was breakfast. The staff were very friendly upon arrival, and we left our bags (without any issues) at the hotel for 2 days while we went trekking in the northern hills. The rooms were spacious, the hotel was very well maintained with clean rooms, the rooms had functioning air conditioning, and the rooms had safety boxes. It was beneficial being on the perimeter of the old city as all drivers had no issue accessing our hotel, and everything within the city limits is in walking distance. There were plenty of delicious restaurants nearby. The only area this hotel was a little ways from was the night bizarre on the east end of the city. Overall, we were very happy with our stay and would recommend this place to anyone looking to spend ~$40 CND/ night.

Tamarind Village was highly recommended by friends, as was booking the Lanna Deluxe rooms for additional space and light. However, the twin bedded rooms are not much bigger than the regular Lanna rooms, book a double with King sized bed for up to 50% more space! I questioned the room sizes with the staff towards the end of my stay and could have chosen an alternate room if available. This was the first boutique hotel in Chiang Mai and so the character of the courtyards dictates the room sizes - ask ahead of booking or for the possibility of a change upon arrival if necessary. Altogether the experience of staying at Tamarind Village was a very positive one. The spa is very good and staff are very helpful. The space around the pool is narrow but this didn't seem to be a problem - there is so much to do in Chiang Mai and environs most people are out all day. The hotel is centrally located within the old city walls so there is lots to see within walking distance and the main shopping areas are not far away. The hotel is well known by taxis and tuk tuk drivers. We privately hired our airport taxi driver for 6 hours (800 baht) rather than use the hotel driver (1700 baht). The hotel staff were also very helpful with suggestions for restaurants and sourcing specific shopping items within the city which helped tremendously. We will stay again and relax more next time!

The quality of service was exceptional. On our first day my wife ordered some chicken soup in their restaurant. It had eggs on it and she doesn’t like eggs that way. So we ordered something else for her. When it was time for us to pay we wanted to pay for the soup as well. But they said its their fault that they didn’t put this in the menu that it had eggs, and so didn’t charge us. Moreover the breakfast was really good as well, we loved their food. The location was really good as well their are plenty of restaurants, 2-3 temples and also the Sunday night market in old city, all within walking distance. Overall it was a very pleasant stay and would love to come here again.

It is a clean neat hotel in Old city. With best location and most friendly helpful services, we have a wonderful stay for two nights there after our riverbank stay. Most enjoyable is their lovely simple breakfast buffet and a quiet clean peaceful swimming pool. I would recommend the premium new deco room which we choose or quiet garden view quiet room on gnd & lower floors.

Besides the fact that it’s located in the old city, it is right next to a beautiful temple. The hotel itself is really nice with good AC. The rooms have plenty of room with comfortable beds and pillows. The staff is also amazing, I was really sick my first two days here and the employees kept checking up on me to make sure that I felt alright. Also included with what you pay is all you can drink cold clean water which is a major plus considering how hot Thailand is. They also have a really good breakfast available with many options, even for the picky eater. I honestly can say enough this about the service, it’s the best I’ve received in any hotel I’ve ever stayed at in my travels, and for the price it’s unbeatable.

The owners of Green Tiger have a passion and gift for hospitality. This place is a labour of love and it shows through in every detail: delightful staff; perfect location; spacious, thoughtfully designed rooms with stylish furnishings; a relaxed open eating & drinking area on the ground floor with lovely gardens; great food; a refreshing swimming pool. True boutique. I stayed for 17 nights and spoke to lots of other guests during that time. Without exception everyone felt they'd uncovered a gem. Between them, the two owners - Daniel and Varee - are fluent in Thai, English, Mandarin, Cantonese, German, and French. They're terrific hosts - constantly making themselves available to guests, day and night. Other front desk staff have Thai and English. All the staff went out of their way to make each guest's stay special: organising tours and transport, attending to special requests, shuttling to and from the airport. There are a range of room options, from shared dorms up to spacious Superior rooms. The Superior rooms 406-411 on the top floor all have wonderful views of Doi Suthep behind the old city skyline. On the way to finding Green Tiger I visited 15 different hotels in the old city, all of which were in the same price range and were well-rated by Agoda. Green Tiger was twice as good as anything else I saw. Highly recommended. I'll definitely stay again.

Fantastic little boutique hotel in traditional architecture and interior appointments to give you that old-world feeling. Only 38-39 rooms and therefore very cosy. But the rooms are big! In the spare spaces, 5 adults can play a game of Twisters with no injuries! Staff attitudes are first rate : polite, friendly, and attentive. Maybe because it's a small boutique hotel that there seems to be a, cosy, fuzzy, family-like atmosphere. Location is fantastic : just inside the edge of the Old City walls and practically next to the Suan Dok gate. Incidentally, Suan Dok gate guards the western entrance to the roughly 1.5km x 1.5km square old Chiang Mai city (pls Google a map of the old city to have an idea). As the hotel is relatively new at only about 2 years old, many tourist maps may not indicate the hotel's presence but it's there. Just look for Suandok gate on the map. The hotel is almost literally a spitting distance away to the left of the gate as you are looking out of the gate from inside the city walls. As far as convenience goes, it's perfect in the sense that it's not far away from the attractions inside the old city walls or surrounding it, and yet not too near the crowds and traffic on the narrow streets within. Perfect balance of convenience and privacy. When I return to Chiang Mai, that's the hotel I'll be going back to. No need to try others.

First time in Chiang Mai - only 2 days. Loved the feel and decor of Gord. Breakfast was also very good and included with room. Perfect location in old city to explore. Rented a scooter for one day - great idea. Drove around entire old city - so many temples to see. Street food is delicious and so cheap. Night Bazaar is fun but pricey - Chatuchak market in Bangkok was cheaper. Absolutely loved Chiang Mai. Will come again!

Hotel is located in old city, just few minutes walk to Tha Pae Gate. Plenty of foods options and shops around that caters to varied tourists. Property is stylishly designed and modern. We got the basic room so spacewas a bit tight partly due to the room layout which did not make full use of space. Bathroom not enough hooks for hanging clothings etc. Mirrors in bathroom only. Wardrobe is way too high to reach if you are petite asian size like me. However room is spotlessly clean and neat. Lighting is good thus with grey walls and bathroom it does not look gloomy. Breakfast has ala carte choices though not wide options as expected for boutique hotels. Staff is helpful and friendly. Will return again and book a higher category instead.

This hotel was a perfect stay for us. First of all it located in Old City and you can walk to everything from the hotel. I love that the hotel is on a quiet street. There is a temple across the street. We also loved that you have to take your shoes off prior to entering the hotel and are given sandals to wear on the property! You are also given a storage area (see photos) to place your shoes in so you don't have to carry them up and down from your room. We stayed in room 301 which faced the back of the hotel. Loved our room! We were worried that our room was right next to the elevator and even looked at another room because we were worried about the noise from the elevator. The only other room they had was one with 2 queen beds and we wanted a king so we took the room by the elevator and had absolutely no issues with it at all. Once in the room you never hear the elevator-it is super quiet and quick to get up and down. My wife is extremely noise sensitive and this hotel and the elevator were super quiet! Breakfast was amazing! We loved breakfast every morning. They serve you a lot of food, included in your main entree they also serve fruit and bread, everything was delicious! The staff was helpful during our stay with directions and anything else we needed. The beds were hard which we prefer so we had good night sleeps! They didn't offer face towels which we are use to in the US so we asked for extra hand towels to wash our face. They also didn't offer lotion so we had to buy some to use while we were there. They do provide shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothbrush and toothpaste as well as shower caps and cutips. It is good to know that only the rooms are air conditioned. The hotel lobby and area where you eat breakfast isn't air conditioned. We were there when it was over 100 everyday and didn't find this to be a problem. But, being use to air conditioning this was a surprise to us when we arrived-we adjusted fine-I would still stay here again.

We were extremely unwell during our stay in Chiang Mai, and the owners of Sri Chiang Yeun House showed us so much kindess - upgrading us to a triple room and letting us stay there each night we extended our stay. The hotel itself is beautiful, looking out over the old city. Ideal location, so easy to access the old city - 10 second walk across the moat that runs around it and you're in the thick of it. Very chilled atmosphere - more suitable for couples looking for a bit of luxury. Really great facilities throughout, and great breakfast included. Would highly recommend the Sri Chiang Yeun House to anyone!

The location is by far the most positive thing about this hotel but that’s not to say the rest is below standard. Our family room was clean and very spacious with a lovely balcony overlooking the pool. Breakfast was simple but with a good selection of eastern and western food- the fresh mangoes were the best I’ve had. Staff we’re friendly and helped us with directions, taxis and let us store our bags overnight when we went to the elephant sanctuary. A lovely, small hotel in the heart of the old city.

If you're open to being in the hustle and bustle of the Old City walls in Chiang Mai this is the best value for money for financially cautious travelers. The grounds are a renovated old colonial building with historic pieces throughout. You'll be welcomed by the garden corridor and swept into the common reception area, which also houses the pool area a few steps away. The staff are tremendously helpful. We had some minor issues that were solved quickly and efficiently. Do not pass up the food and snacks that are complimentary to your stay here. Everything we've had from breakfast to the afternoon snack items have been delicious. The breakfast menu has a wide variety of food, from traditional Western breakfast (the waffles are to die for), to Thai, Idian, or Italian items. Fresh pressed juices and coffee to order. The location is within the Old City walls and is within walking distance to any sites you're after. A cab out of the city walls can run from 200B+.

We found ourselves back in Chiang Mai, this time at Nanya. Took the gamble and it paid off. This is a budget hostel but does not feel like one. Feels like a standard hotel. The female staff in the mornings make the stay totally worth it. Always smiling and greeting you. The pool is probably the biggest selling point in our eyes. You won't find a hotel in Old City at this price point that offers a pool. It is very clean and they are constantly maintaining it/the property. Rooms are basic but clean. The property doesn't "advertise" breakfast but they have complimentary: toast, cereal, coffee, tea and juice in the mornings. Wifi is kind of weak in the rooms (falls in and out) but the lobby connection is very strong. The property even held onto our bags for a week while we were on a road trip. Overall really liked this property and booked here several more times while in the city!

Great hotel if you plan on staying in Old City, we found we were leaving old city a lot to get closer to the action. Not the hotels fault at all. Found the staff spoke just enough English to get by, not a ton of help with many of our questions we had. Pro’s: - Clean, modern rooms - Delicious Breakfasts (the bread is so yummy!) - Refreshing pool Con’s: - Tough to get to. Tuk Tuks/Taxis don’t really know where it is. Definitely recommend having the hotel pinned on your cell phone maps - Air Con wasn’t really keeping up by the second night

Was welcomed on arrival by one of the sister owners and offered a seat and drink while checking in. Bags taken to my room while waiting. Check in eas one quick form. The room was large with a separate sitting area. Lights of light from windows with good blackout curtains for the night. Decent wifi speed and good television choices. Easy to walk to old city sites or get outside the old city to pick up a bus or taxi for other sites. While the accommodations are impeccable, sister owners make this place special. If I asked a question they would either answer or go online and find me an answer. They booked my bus tickets and got me information on choices of transport to Laos. Were interested in their guests so conversation was free and fluid. They speak excellent English. Only issue for me was local dogs barking at night which happened half the nights here but only a short burst in the middle of the night, not all night. As good as I have found anywhere.

After a lot of research & reading reports on trip advisor I booked this hotel as we wanted somewhere with character, at a reasonable price & good standard. Vieng Mantra ticks all of the boxes. It is absolutely delightful & everything I expected. Our plane was delayed by 3 hrs but the hotel driver was waiting for us and promptly delivered us to the hotel. Don't be put off when you arrive in a small back lane at the hotel, once you step inside you find yourself in an oasis. The location is fantastic, a quiet little lane but so close to everything. Thai Phei gate is just around the corner, as is the Sunday night walking market. An 80 baht tuk tuk ride to night bazaar and to the river. I recommend wandering aimlessly through all of the little lanes around the old city, you will find cheap massage & some great little bars. It is very safe to walk at night, locals are very friendly. Just outside the entrance to the hotel are some great massage places. 200 baht for 1 hour Thai massage or aromatherapy massage. The hotel is immaculate, we are in a superior room on third floor overlooking pool. The staff are great,young and happy, eager to please. Food in the hotel restaurant is very good & cheap. Beers 40-60 baht, cocktails 100 baht. Lots of good eateries close by, so much to choose from. Our room is large enough with a lovely day bed by the window, also a day bed on the balcony ( where I am sitting with a glass of wine as I write this review). Free wifi in the room is a bonus. Overall, I highly recommend Vieng Mantra, while it is quite a new building the Lan style gives you a sense of the culture with all the modern amenities. When I return to Chang Mai I will be staying here.

We all enjoyed our stay at this lovely little lodge, a beautiful garden and a small pool for my 4 year old to play in were excellent extras to compliment a great room with a really comfortable bed and sofa. The staff were lovely as were the croissants, fruit, yoghurts, fresh coffee and cooked breakfasts offered each morning. 20 lodge had everything we needed. They do not serve food except for breakfast but Chiang Mai has countless eateries of all types. The location could be seen as positive or negative - lovely quiet, peaceful corner of the old city, away from the main tourist side of the old city. Thapae gate is a reasonable walk or a short songtaew drive away.

Wannamas is located right next to Wat Phra Singh in Old City Chiang Mai. You can hear the school children in the morning- which was pleasing-otherwise a quiet location.The location was super for walking around and exploring old city and for setting up for side trips if you are interested in exloring outside the old city. The hotel is very small , clean and quaint, with lovely teak furniture and plants that are so very Thailand. The staff is friendly and the buffet breakfast is well appointed with fresh food choices,Thai specialties , eggs,fresh yogurts and cereals. We found it pleasant and relaxed with great coffee ( which is available all day!) for a nice start to our day. This little boutique hotel has no pool ( which would have been nice)- But we found it comfortable and quiet as a couple here for a 4 night stay to explore Chiang Mai. Bonus too- There is a wonderful chicken restaurant just 2 doors down SP Chicken ,that was delicious.
