My favorite hotel in Egypt ”

5 Star Service and Decor

After two weeks and many hotels throughout Cairo, Luxor and Aswan, I was very pleasantly surprised by the fantastic Metropole in Alexandria. Situated so that it can see the glorious Alexandria harbor front, the view of the Mediterranean as you arrive is worth the price of entry alone. And then you go inside. You can feel the plush, rich history from every part of the hotel. From the spiraling staircase to the open-air elevator, the entire experience oozes class. The service is easily 5 stars. I've stayed at places such as the Hilton Beijing and the Waldorf in NYC, and the service here outclasses them easily. Attentive and friendly staff who take the load off your shoulders are around every corner. You will feel pampered in a way that I can only assume rich Europeans felt at the beginning of the 20th century. The restaurant is also an incredible gem. The breakfast buffet is miles beyond what you expect, with tables of pastries, fresh fruit, juices and breads, and great Egyptian hot dishes (like fava beans). Even if it doesn't have the '5 star amenities' that everyone never uses, personally I consider it 5 stars because of the service and decor. I highly recommend this hotel in Alexandria.

It is a beautiful place. Choose Sea View Rooms! ”

We LOVED our stay here. Friendly helpful staffs. From the receptionists to the porters to security to housekeeping! Loved it! We spent a week here and no regrets. Just that the wallpaper in the rooms needed some repairs. Otherwise it was great. Accessible to everywhere. We went by foot to fish market, alexandria library. Next door to the hotel, trianon cafe, yummy Om Ali dessert! If you need a train service to cairo, just inform the receptionist and they will arrange it for you. 100 egyptian pounds per ticket for first class non stop train. 2.5hours. Just pay about 20pounds extra and a little tip for them to transport themselves from the ticket counter back to hotel. Opp, Alex Bank for money exchange. Very convenient. We miss this place already!

The elevator itself is a good reason to come back”

The room is comfortable and very quaint, as the hotel maintains the character of its beginnings. The staff are very friendly and helpful. I continue to stay in this hotel when I visit Alexandria, and the people remember me and are happy to see me again.
Can't think of any. Maybe you wouldn't like the sounds from the streetcar and the bustling street in the shopping area below, but for me, it merely added to the romance of the experience.

I first stayed in this hotel six years ago when on a tour of Alexandria. I was fascinated by its charm and character. The elevator is one of those old-fashioned "boxes" that travels up and down on a pulley. It's safe, of course, but it's fun to open the iron gates and step in and then imagine you're back in the early 1900s as you travel to your room. In fact, the hotel was built in the early 1900s so it maintains the charm of that era while keeping updated with the changing times. You'll see it also in the fixtures in the bathroom, which include a bidet. They work like new, but they look like the Old Days. The wallpaper and statues may be vintage replica, but the tapestries and other decor are well-maintained original. It's a treat to stay here.

Classic Old-World Charm”

Beautiful decor, great location, friendly staff. The star of the show is that antique wooden cage-style elevator. It's a trip back in time, yet with the comforts of today's lifestyle.
Sure, it's a little noisy, sitting right in the center of all the activity of shopping and the metro, but it's easy enough to close the windows and relax. It isn't noisy enough to keep me awake.

This hotel was the first one I stayed in during my first stay in Alexandria, back in 2004. It was charming then, and it's charming now. I've stayed here several times since then and each time is a pleasure. The entrance opens directly onto the sidewalk and from that door one can go anywhere in the city, to the shopping area just in the vicinity, or on the street with a taxi, a bus or the metro to other interesting parts of the city. The great library is only a short walk from the hotel, and the sea is right across the Corniche. It's a very pleasant stay at this hotel.

Location & Breakfast

for visiting alex, there is no better location than being smack on the corniche. the metropole, right next to the famous cecil is unbeatable. not sure if this would pass as a 4 star hotel in europe or canada, but in egypt, let alone, alex, this is tough to beat. that being said, it sure was not perfect. the hotel is located in a very busy spot, and from 6pm to midnight, the honking and crowding never ends. you will need to turn on the ac fan to cover the street noise. we were in a superior room on the top floor and it still reached us. con, so be aware. personally, i sleep through everything but some are sensitive. the room was clean, and staff as super friendly as are all alex people. those who beg to differ probably never smiled at them first. you want good service, ask with a smile. in alex, no one will say no to you with good manners. breakfast was great. again, those who complain don't accept/expect buffet style to be a little on the lukewarm side. but there is a lot to choose from and can get eggs, omelets, and chocolate crepes on demand to the chef at task. our train was leaving at 3pm and we weren't quite finished with visiting so we left our luggage at the hotel until 2pm, behind the creaking but safe elevator and management was fine with this. and by the way, yes the elevator: just because it is not surrounded by walls and is just riding up and down next to the staircase with mechanism for everyone to see does not make it unsafe. it's old but it runs fine. my wife and i got a kick out of it. finally, some decoration tacky but overall feels like old luxury. nothing is really run down, just kitschy here and these. enjoy. we did.

Old world hospitality”

I found it extremely convenient to get from the train station to the hotel, though the bus station was a little far. Very conveniently located to major touristy attractions, as well as food and the coast.
Only one lift which can make it slow in peak times, but the stairs are fine.

A very period hotel with large rooms, a fantastic lift and excellent service right in the heart of Alexandria. We booked into a twin room but was given a double - they converted it to a twin with the minimum of fuss. Very helpful reception whom spoke English. I really enjoyed my time here and would stay again.

A Charming Old Style Hotel”

A very central location to various tourist attractions

Alexandria hotels are quite expensive, so the price of this hotel is reasonable. It has an old charm, the things from the past contribute to its characteristics. But of course a bit worn out. The room is not as spacious as expected even though we have booked a junior suite. There is noise coming in from the street if the window is opened. Fortunately the air conditioning is working quite well. The bath room is also a bit worn out. The breakfast room is delightful, but the food quality is just at acceptable level. The hotel location is very good, only ten minutes taxi to the National Museum and the Library, and just across the busy road to the water front.

Small reservation snafu, but otherwise good.”

Great antique elevators, great rooftop restaurant (in partner hotel Windsor Palace Hotel).
Reservation snafu in that I reserved Le Metropole Hotel but when we arrived, we were told that we were booked at a nearby Windsor Palace Hotel, a sister hotel.

Despite small reservation snafu (not a big deal but slightly annoying considering our late night arrival), all was well. The Le Metropole's sister hotel had a great rooftop terrace for breakfast, and cool antique elevators. BOTH hotels are in great locations, just across from the Corniche.

Throwback in time”

I really liked my stay at the Metropole mainly for the location and the great value for money. The rooftop view is magnificent. However, the staff is unqualified. Most of them don't understand English and you have to explain, repeat, follow-up which gets tiring at the end. They have a tendency to say "one minute" but never come back or never deliver the right thing. The other negative point is the carpet. It's very old and dirty and you can't walk in the room without your shoes. I would recommend the owner of the place to renovate this and also find a way people wipe their feet or remove shoes. The problem is that the city is very dirty so everything is brought inside. Other than these two challenges, I really like my stay. The room service is satisfactory.

A Pleasant Stay”

(1) Excellent breakfast buffet: omelette bar, Middle Eastern salad bar, toast/breads, cakes, cereal, rice pudding, fresh-ish fruit. (2) Location: beginning/end of the main tram line; right on the Corniche; an easy walk to the library, the excellent Alexandria National Museum, etc. Bathroom: spacious, very clean, newly refurbished
(1) Frontdesk staff: friendly, but not highly knowledgable and not fluent in languages besides Arabic (N.B. The tourist info office is not very helpful either, so do your research before arrival! The hotel-provided map is far better than the tourist office map.) (2) Rooms: Weak, limited lighting; a great deal of street noise (Don't forget earplugs!) (3) Hotel amenities: No bar, restaurant; no rooftop terrace or other area for enjoying sea views

All considered, the Metropole didn't disappoint. Nice simple touches were the cool lemon welcome drink (available at breakfast as well as in any bar; definitely try it!), welcome fruit plate (while the fruit wasn't particularly fresh, the gesture was much appreciated), and complimentary snack cart by the Art Deco elevator. Moreover, the reduced rates on Agoda were a great selling point. All of this said, next time, we'll check out the Windsor Palace. Same corporate owners, but the Windsor Place is directly on the Corniche and has a rooftop restaurant.

We had a very nice short stay at the hotel. Location is great, the view from top roof is marvelous. ”

The hotel is in the center of the city, very close to train station, rooms are comfortable and clean. The top roof is marvelous, we enjoyed the view during the breakfast time. The staff is helpful, welcoming and friendly. I only wished to have more electric outlets in the room, also to put more information about possibilities of having lunch or dinner in the hotel, cost and menus. A complementary tray for coffee and tea would be great. Finally if some practical information about nearby site seeing with a city plan are available, this could be a good idea. Thank you very much for the pleasant time we had, definitely I recommend it and will go again.

Can not think of anything

I arrived to a warm welcome & a complimentary cool drink & a snack. Very friendly staff, with offers of assistance. The hotel is centrally located, out the front door you are in the heart of downtown shopping precinct. A two minute walk will have you at the tram stop or a 1 minute walk will have you at the beach front. I you enjoy walking you can head off to the Library or to the Citadel. Lovely old hotel with a lift that should be in a museum, big clean rooms, free internet & great breakfast bar

Located in the heart of the city centre, less tha 100 metres from the Mediterranean sea. The Hotel Is In The Center Point Of Alexandria
Standard Room Is too Small & very noisy

The most unique feature about this hotel is that it belongs to a different era; the very high cieling , the golden incryptions on the walls , the paintings every where , the lobby furniture and above all the thing I loved most was the elevator which appears as if it was the first elevator ever invented!! The beds in the bedrooms were very luxurious they covered the fact that the room was very small . The bathroom was crystal clear and smelled tropical fruits all the time . The main restaurant were we had our breakfast comes from a fairy tale book were kings and queens used to have their masqured balls.
