missing hat”
loved staying at the Parador san Marcos as you can see from my ratings of excellent. However - my lovely panama hat which has accompanied me on many jouneys to different places in the world went missing from my room on the day we checked out. I know exactly where I left it -on a chair-and i realised I'd left it on our way to the Eurostar hotel in Leon . -not far away ! The receptionist at Eurostar rang San Marcos as soon as we arrived there-about 10-15 mins cab ride-and was told no hat .Did anyone check the room at San Marcos- they didnt seem at all concerned although we told them where the hat was in the room. We tried again later - same reply -and i called there myself the next day and received the same disinterested reply. I was very disappointed at their response. -and their housekeeping staff as well as the front of house staff I encountered.I dont think they made any effort to recover my hat and it was either thrown away or 'borrowed'.

A grand historical hotel but marred with few issues”
This hotel comes with impressive fassage on the exterior. But once you lived inside, you would notice these surprising omissions for such luxurious hotel: (1) Uncomfortable beds. (2) Limited breakfast selections. (3) Extremely inflexible staff. If you are driving with luggages, be prepared to carry your stuffs miles apart from the hotel as there is an extremely dedicated yet inflexible security guard that don't allow you to drive near the hotel for 5-min drop-off, citing noise issues. This hotel would have gotten a 4-star if not these omissions.

Beautiful Hotel”
We had a great time here. The room was clean and comfortable with good beds and a great bath. The staircase and the rest of the interior were beautiful and adjacent historic buildings were fascinating. The staff in the bar was excellent as were the drinks, tapas and desserts.

Beautiful hotel ”
Breakfast buffet, great staff
Staff were very friendly and had fantastic English. Chambermaid was very helpful with my laundry. Breakfast was fantastic!!! Food gets a bit average on the camino but this was awesome. Room was lovely, my friend found her mattress uncomfortable but I didn't mind mine. Bathroom was fantastic (again - such a luxury on the camino!).

Amazing hotel”
Full of history
Even my room which was the cheapest room available included a sitting area and balcony. The bathroom was well appointed. If walking the camino, the hotel is on the way out of town. It was a privilege to stay in this wonderful hotel which is steeped in history.

Splurge”
The hotel is literally in a Renaissance palace--we kept passing the landmark when first searching for our hotel! The view outside our window was gorgeous--the balconies overlooked the palace gardens with their mazes. You could walk right outside the hotel and visit the adjacent museum. A luxurious bathroom included deliciously spicy soap (sandalwood?), a complement to the spicy-sweet scent that permeated the hotel, possibly coming from cedarwood doors and paneling that imitated the ancient doors of the palace. The beautiful cathedral of Leon is about a ten minutes' walk away, and there are stores and restaurants in the immediate vicinity. There was a good hotel breakfast in the attractive dining room.
While certainly not the worst I slept on during this trip, the bed was quite hard. The wait staff in the cafe was not accommodating.
For me this was a big splurge, and I really enjoyed it. The setting was formal and palatial (rather than a romantic castle), with a very masculine feel to it--massive wooden doors; antiques in the hallways and main rooms; a grand staircase with tapestries leading down to Reception. I found the cracks in some of the marble tiling in the bathroom odd for a luxury hotel but my companion (whose room's bathroom also had cracks) felt that it added charm and let you know/feel that even there the materials were antique. Most of the staff (everyone at the reception desk) was very helpful. But we were disappointed with the attitude of the people in the bar/cafe. We arrived very late and our dinner was a snack there; although there were only one or two others in the bar, it took a long time to be waited on and it seemed as if the bartender was annoyed at having to deal with us. Later, I went down to reception and asked to borrow a corkscrew. I was told, sure, no problem, and you can even return it tomorrow morning--just go to the bar and ask. When I went to the bar and asked, I was given a dirty look, told no at first, then oh, okay, with a very bad grace. I decided it wasn't worth the effort. Especially in a luxury hotel the service should be more gracious than that! (And in retrospect, the person at reception should have gotten it for me, rather than having me go around and have to ask again in my broken, almost non-existent Spanish). I got a good rate for our rooms, and was thrilled to stay at at least one parador, but I will say that this was not my favorite hotel experience on this trip despite the luxury.

Fantástico con aire añejo”
Agradable, tranquilo y bien situado

Hotel encantador y servicio cordial”
Tranquilo y silencioso. Edificio maravilloso
