The walk into town is a delight with lots to see, and the river views are great from the communal areas, and from our room( .

Great choice in Nong Khiaw”
i arrived by a very rustic bus from luang prabang and was happy to see the hotel located just across the street from the bus station. as a solo woman traveler i was very comfortable during my 3 day stay at this hotel. the rooms are simple, but lovely as one entire wall is made of glass panels that overlook a tranquil manicured garden and the mist shrouded "xang" or "elephant" rock formation that gives the hotel its name. floor to ceiling curtains are hung for privacy. delicious lao food is available in an indoor/outdoor restaurant on site with a view of the ou river. very little english is spoken here, but the menu is written with english translation. bicycles are available for rent at the hotel and are a great means of transportation between nong khiaw "town center" and the hotel. it was wonderful to ride the bike back to the hotel at night after enjoying a massage or dinner in the main part of the town. it would have been a long dark walk back to the hotel without the bike. this hotel is not for the extreme budget traveler as there are many cheaper options available, but well worth the price.
Lovely hotel and service”
Beautiful mountain and river views, basically no english in the whole village, but you will get by OK. Room is beautiful, but the walls are paper thin, get to know your neighbour well. :) Would be the best hotel in Nong Khiaw
Peaceful beautiful river views”
If you want to relax come to this place. The views are spectacular along the river. Located almost directly across from the bus station where the mini-van drops you off, this resort has bungalows with complete glass fronts. (Nong Khiaw) The description says all rooms are 'garden view' which is true but they mostly face the river. #1 in on the river with a beatiful view. No air conditioning yet (the owner says 2 months/now it is the end of July) but has nice ceiling fans and maybe in peak season the air cond isn't necessary. GREAT screens on all opening windows. Crisp sheets on the beds and coverlets, hot water pot in rooms with coffee/tea. A little rustic but the setting alone is to die for. This place is a 15 minutes walk to the bridge & town/cafes. There is a great map at: Nong Kiew Map - HoboMaps.com No tuk tuks here. Good little store about 2 minutes from gate. Ok breakfasts, wonderful staff but not much English.
Disapointed so left early”
After much deliberation before our travels we booked Pha Xang for 8 nights as a base for our stay in Nong Khiaw. Although located in a beautiful spot on the river the orienation of the rooms is all wrong! We had what would be considered the best room on the end of a row next to the river but were faced with a view of the dining area rather than the stunning scenery! Such a shame that the room views have been overlooked when designing the hotel. As friendly as the staff were, they spoke no English, so the most basic communication was impossible. When we arrived after a 5 hour trip there was no-one there to meet us (eventually we found a cleaner or hannded us a key) so we were left with all of our luggage and had to find our room, move in ourselves. That evening we seemed to be the only guests on site, there were no staff to be found and the dining area was closed so no chance of getting a drink/food! Our first attempt a nights sleep was inturrupted by building works a few metres from our room which started at around 5am. Although the rooms and bathroom were clean, the bathroom room has no drainage so after a shower the bathroom floor remains soaked all day. We were aware in advance the hotel was not right in town but were happy to walk the 20 minutes or so into town, thinking the we would have the benefit of the beautiful surroundings, great views etc so were really disaponted with the hotel itself. After the second night we cut our losses and moved up to Nong Khiaw Riverside in the heart of town which was the best move we made. What a difference and for the same price too! If you're looking for a picturesque base with great facilities in this price range, opt for Nong Khiaw Riverside.
When you travel by minibus you are lucky: this place is located just opposite the bus station. The resort is very quiet, the rooms are very comfortable and the view of the river is amazing - if not the best of Nong Khiauw. Two guestrooms share one bungalow. The walls are not very thick so you can easily overhear your neigbours. Since the resort did not seem to be fully booked all the time, you might want to ask for a room without neigbours. Staff is very very friendly, but knowledge of English is very basic. Breakfast is fine, it is served on the best lounge deck of the town.
Good infrastructure but staffs don't want to cook”
Good place if you just want a decent environment to stay. Staff are nice but they would ask you to eat elsewhere for lunch and dinner. Food is decent as long as they are willing to cook. A crazy barking dog between pha xang and madala ou resort was the highlight of the walk after dinner every night.
Rooms in bungalows by the river”
Our rooms were ready and very clean. There were not really beautiful and there is no separation between the shower and the sink/toilet. The water was warm. The main drawback is the total lack of insulation between two rooms (there are two rooms to a bungalow) and you can hear everything your neighbors are saying or feel any of their moves. And some of the doors make noise when you close them. But the setting is the best in that village, with the river flowing and the mountain across from the tables where you have breakfast or can read and relax during the day. The staff hardly speaks English but it is not much of a problem. They will do anything to help you out and they even brought us some lemon grass tea as we were reading outside, without us asking for anything! The village is small and most of the restaurants and guest houses are on the other side of the river, a 20 minute walk away. But this walk is what we thought was the most interesting part of our trip in Laos! You can actually see how Lao people live, selling traditional food in front of their house, weaving, sending the kids off to school... The hotel is very conveniently located next to the bus station (well, there are three buses per day so you won't be bothered by the sound of the engines). We really got some nice, peaceful time in this hotel. I just wish they could serve traditional Lao food for breakfast instead of a (good, I must admit) Western style buffet. On our last day, we had a choice between Lao food or Western food and the Lao food was delicious. I guess most of the tourists had gone so there was no need for a whole buffet. We will certainly stay there again!
better than the reviews suggest”
you need a bike or other transport to stay here it is a perfectly maintained cheerful spot right on the river just outside of town, the management seems to consist of a family of non-english speaking women who are always lying on a bed in the office room, but there is a young guy there with a bit of english who will help you with anything you need at the hotel. for weightier questions about activities and travel ask in the agencies in town !! lovely breakfast on the river terrace. super clean rooms w/hot water shower that works. this place is better than the reviews here make it out, i was happy here.
Great Location, But.”
Lovely location right on the river, but a good walk into town for restaurants or travel shops. We were the only people staying at the Resort and felt staff were not too bothered that we had arrived. There was no reception area to leave keys or ask advice etc, so consequently on one of the day's our room wasn't cleaned because they couldn't access the room ! Apparently a master key not available. This was no big deal really, but just illustrates a lack of empathy by the staff for providing guests with what comfort the superb Resort location deserve.
Good basic accomodations”
This is a basic double cabin type accomodation not really a resort. They serve a good breakfast....but it's all about the view of the Ou River and the mountains.
a nice, clean resort”
The resort is located just next to the central bus station. The room is big. its a bungalow with its own balcony with a great view to the river. The resort has a beautifll garden that surrounds it. The breakfast is very nice. There was great hot water in the shower. We didn't have an access to a WiFi, although there is one.
amazing hotel, staff were great and the facilities were great. massage service, room service and food. i highly recommend this hotel if you are looking for some great r & r at the end of a stay or just want to get out of town.
Lovely hotel, 15' walking to the village”
room and breakfast were great. the walking to the village aloud you to have a look around and see local people, students going to the school... and at night when going back to the hotel, just look up to the sky and enjoy the view of millions stars shining!
Not as described, but what we got was good....”
This resort is certainly not as described on Agoda: there are no English-speaking staff; there is no reception area( let alone a 24-hour one) there is no restaurant, there is no atm, there is no money exchange. What is there is a group of very attractive and clean cabins in a small and pretty garden setting, and an open terrace area with stunning views of the river. We found the staff to be initially very careful of us, but then eased off......I think they are just fed up with being criticized for the discrepancy between the Agoda claims, and the reality. We enjoyed our five days there.
Well placed hotel”
Although a little way out of town, about 15/20 minutes gentle walk, we feel that we had value for money. Breakfast was more than adequate, our unit was clean , hard bed but comfortable...could do with some cushions for the seats both in our room and the eating areas. Staff have limited English but we got by. Very handy for the bus station, virtually opposite, a bonus after a bumpy ride up from LP, no need for a transfer. The walk into town is a delight with lots to see, and the river views are great from the communal areas, and from our room(1) .Evening food looked fine although we didn't eat any preferring to eat in town. Also quiet apart from the usual dawn chorus of roosters....need a torch for walking back when dark, street lighting is limited.
great view...but not really a resort”
This was a good value. Great view. No amenities...so not a resort despite the name.
Not really a resort. Basic cabins with great view.
Great bungalows arranged around a beautiful garden”
On the banks of the Nam Ou river but around 1.5 kms from town/main bridge! Owners should arrange bike hire for guests. We hire our own for 3 days - the alternative was long walk back in the rain!
Nice setting but would have liked to have more inf”
The opening of the restaurant at 6 pm came as a pleasant surprise as until then it had appeared deserted. It was dark again by 9.30 so be on time. Food was delicious.
Nice Facility, Very Good Food”
Overlooking the beautiful sandstone hill and Mekong River this location is what made our stay. The bedrooms and bath are very large and roomy. It seem that each room has a small patio area. Don't expect your linen to be cleaned or changed. While the cover for the comforter was clean on our arrival, the comforter wasn't and had an unpleasnt odor. Don't expect to get your daily fix of CNN either, no TV. It did add to atmosphire though, gave you the feelong you were out in the back country. Untill you see that the owners have satellite. Good time to get caught up on your reading. The dining area is made up of a large covered table and several short tables on the patio. Didn't like the short tables on the patio felt like I was sitting at a kids table with poor lighting during dinner. We were not with a tour and while in the middle of our dinner, sitting at the large table was asked to move to make room for a tour group. May want to make other plans for dinner. The two things going for this guesthouse is the views and the food. Service on the other hand wasn't warm and didn't feel welcome.
