I don't leave review often but the hospitality I received from Phoenix Hostel was amazing! Just the moment I entered the hostel, the staff greeted me cheerfully and prepared a tea (there was a free-flow tea). The room and private bathroom was super clean, they also have installed a curtain in every bed which I like. Quiet room and cosy rooftop bar. It really felt like home, I will DEFINITELY stay at Phoenix hostel again the next time I'm in Shanghai. The red-haired girl is the coolest staff, I like her spirit🤘🏽 if you read this, you're awesome!!
thanks for staying here,we would like to see you soon. hope to see you soon.
Very central and excellent value for money”
If you want a plain, clean discount hotel in the centre of Shanghai to use as a base while sightseeing then go to the Phoenix. Excellent value for a central Shanghai location, very near 2 metro stations and Peoples Square. In the middle of restaurants quarter with great small shops including a small supermarket next door open 24 hours where you can buy water, milk, yoghourt etc. Small fruit shops and bakeries are also close by. The hotel is on top of its own very popular restaurant but on the 4th floor we were not bothered by noise or smell from the restaurant. All the staff were very helpful. Breakfast on the roof terrace is good. The room was clean, a reasonable size, and unusually for China, the bed was very comfortable. The dispenser in the room for hot and cold drinking water was great for making coffee and tea. Since the price is low expect the furnishings and decoration to be basic and a bit knocked about. Our 4th floor room looked out of the back of the hotel onto roofs so no scenic view of Shanghai but it was quiet. People have reported not having hot water in the shower but that only happened to us once in a week. We missed having a room safe and suggest the hotel puts in lockers for guests. We felt very safe in the hotel and in the neighbouring streets, even late at night. We would return to the Phoenix.
Great location, average but clean rooms.”
The Phoenix Hostel, or Phoenix Hotel (the sign says hotel) was a perfect spot to be based out of for my short trip to Shanghai. It was on a busy restaurant street, full of noodles, hot pot and other Asian cuisine, with Western amenities just a block away (McDonalds and Starbucks). A quick walk over the main road and you were at Peopple's Square and walking along the main shopping drag. Despite the proximity to many places, the hotel was rather quiet, and the restaurants shut down before I went to bed (lots of eating on the streets, so that could have posed a problem). The rooftop bar was simple and friendly, with some couches and a huge picnic table for travelers to join eachother for a beer or two. In the room, there was a tv and a water dispenser (though it only dispensed HOT water...) The shower had a curtain, the towels were clean but a little worse-for-wear. I wore the provided slippers in the room. Bed was comfortable. Sheets were clean. Slept like a log. But the walls were a bit thin, and I could hear the tv from the room next door.
Fluent english speaking staff, good central location, roof top bar”
There is a cool bar on the roof top of the building where you can view the city. The Chinese male staff member who works in the roof top bar is very fluent in English. All the other staff members can speak English.A lot of people in Shanghai struggle to speak English, so I am glad I stayed at this hostel because they could give me suggestions and directions etc. I was in a private room which was nice and renovated. It is about 20 mins walk to the bund and 8 mins walk to some other nightclubs. It is a good central city location.Very good atmosphere.I would highly recommend staying here in Shanghai.
The location is perfect! Very close to Nanjing Road, Shanghai Museum, Yu Yuan Garden and the Bund. Friendly staff, clean room and serves delicious buffet breakfast. Enjoyed my 3-night stay at Phoenix Hostel!
thanks for staying here ,we wish u have a good day.
A hostel that aims to provide quality stay to all travellers”
Prior my booking at Phoenix Hostel, I read many reviews on multiple platforms. True enough, the team at this hostel constantly seeks to provide a high level of comfort to each traveler. Housekeepers were professional and diligent in maintaining the cleanliness of the place. The location was great albeit that it was a little hard for vegans to find suitable food. Great job, Team Phoenix Hostel!
Thank you Yvonne, We wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Most convenient, pretty, well priced and well placed Accommodation! Foreigner friendly”
Was delighted to find that shuttle bus #5 from the airport dropped and picked people up at the nearest corner to the hostel. For 22rmb! The service was exceptional with really attentive staff speaking good English. The breakfast for 28rmb was also good with local and western style food, lots of vegetable options. Rooms were spotlessly clean and bathroom facilities were good. We arrived during New Years (and the corona virus outbreak !) when everything was closed, cold and wet, and it was a blessing to see this hostel on a quaint street full of eating places and shops. Once the rain stopped it was amazing again to see how close it was to many places. Great work Phoenix!
Great location, nice rooms, definitely value for money ”
Pros: location. The subway is just 5 minutes walk. People’s Square, Yu Garden, K11, The Bund are close enough to walk as well. Numerous food options along with bars and clubs are located nearby. Cleanliness. The rooms are clean and tidy so as bathrooms. Bar on the rooftop. Just a nice place to spare an evening and meet some new people. Flexibility. It’s possible to check in before noon if a bed is available. You can also leave your staff at the hostel after you checked out. Thanks for that! Staff. Very helpful! Thanks to Liz and the bartender whose name I forgot, I’m sorry. Cons: not found. Except maybe for the too loud lockers in the rooms.
thanks for choosing staying here,we would like to see u soon. wish u have a good day!
A Great Place to Stay”
The Phoenix is easy to find, close to the Metro. We had no trouble walking to quite a number of the city centre sites. It's also on a street with lots of small restaurants and food stalls, although the restaurant connected to the hostel was very good, so we ate there quite often. The double room is small but adequate with a comfortable mattress, good shower with lots of hot water. Internet can be spotty, but any time we had problems, the staff fixed it quickly. The staff was very friendly and helpful, although some weren't so strong on their English. Melon was wonderful in helping us make train arrangements for a day in Suzhou. We were glad to be well prepared as train stations in China can be quite daunting. Aye helped us with translating notices. Both were very interested in chatting about our adventures in the city if they weren't busy. We were very happy with our stay at the Phoenix, and would recommend it to anyone.
Thank you very much for staying with us. We look forward to welcoming you again at the Phoenix!
Nice place to stay in Shanghai”
We stayed at the Phoenix Hostel for 5 nights. It's a pretty big place, so it didn't really feel like a hostel (more like a hotel), but we also stayed in a private room. Perhaps a dorm room is different. It's a good location, near to the MTR and within walking distance of lots of restaurants and sights. The bathroom started to smell bad after a couple of days, which wasn't great, and the wifi was basically non-existent. It felt a bit pricey for what it was, but I think that's just Shanghai. Overall, we had a nice experience, and having a desk and kettle in the room was awesome.
I was really satisfied.”
Was really satisfied the Phoenix hostel. The staff who speaks really well gave me good Shanghai informations. And good wi-fi in the dorm. Also good locker key and entrance & room security kard. Really amazing the price. Nice!
Phoenix Bar, Sandwich, Feel as home”
A bar called PHOENIX is on the roof of the hostel. You can have breakfast in the bar, where you can eat the most delicious egg sandwich in the world. also, the bar will provide coffee, beer, wine, and other beverage. Shanghai is a crowed, polluted, and noise city, but you will feel warm, happy, and peaceful when you enter the bar. The bar manager is a very nice guy. Phoenix Bar left me with my most precious memory in Shanghai.
Great location ”
Stayed here for 3 nights. Quite easy to find. A 10 minute walk from People's Square metro station and about 20 minute stroll to the Bund. Many shopping placing available nearby. Rooms are small but for me was comfortable. Clean, and the bed was comfy. Reception staff are very helpful and you can book things from the desk. A friendly bar on the roof top also available is a laundry facility. Internet is a little slow especially at peak times when many people must be logged on. There is a resturaunt with a plentiful menu. Easy to get around from the hotel. A taxi to Shanghai airport is 200 Yeun, necessary if you have an early flight as the metro doesn't open till around 5.30am. Good budget hotel for those wishing to be in a location to sightsee .
Great hostel in an excellent location ”
This is a great hostel only a few minutes from tyre nearest metro station. There are loads of good restaurants nearby and it's not far to walk to The Bund. Rooms are nicely laid out and have good sized lockers. The beds could do with slightly thicker mattresses but they're fine. The rooftop bar is a really good space and the staff working there are nice. Bathrooms are really clean and there's plenty of showers. I'll definitely stay again next time I'm in Shanghai.
Great location, functional”
Great location near two metro stops, loads of food options, and walkable distance to East Nanjing road, Shanghai Museum, People's Square, the Bund and Yu Garden. The hostel did try to organize some activities but participation was hit and miss by the hostel guests.
thanks for staying here, we would like to see you soon. have a good day
Suitable for backpacker”
It is suitable for backpacker with small luggage. I was traveling with a colleague after our business trip. It was the last night in Shanghai for us, but we went in with 1 big and 1 small luggage individually. So it was kinda inconvenient not only for us but also for the roommate. We booked a mixed dorm for 8,toilet and bathroom are inside the room, for those who not use to sharing and waking up in the odd hour to disturb others, better don't choose this hostel. Roommates switch off lights before 10pm, we have to use the individual light (like study lamp) to packed our luggage before we go to airport in the early morning. It is very cheap, hostel also clean. Staff are helpful also. The hostel is close to the DaShiJie MRT station, the is an exit/entrance with lift. Can't remember the number, but is located at opposite road of the closest exit/entrance to Phoenix hostel.
Wonderful. Nice location and very helpful staff.”
My stay at the Phoenix Hostel was actually good. It really had a good location and very helpful staff. They let me check-in so early in the morning thanks to room availability for no fee. And the room is acceptably clean. My only concern for this hostel is the bathroom. There were no toilet napkins in the bathroom. But more importantly, they shower curtain was raised to high above the ground. So when you shower, the curtains didn't really do a good job in keeping the water inside the shower area. Also, she might have just missed our room, but on my 2nd day the bathroom wasn't cleaned by the cleaning lady. Other than that, no major problems. If you'll be out most of your stay there and just be at the hostel to sleep and shower, this hostel is a good option.
Great hostel! ”
This place is in a great location and served as a great hub for our days out visiting Shanghai. The metro is just around the corner, and there are many restaurants to choose from. The staff is very helpful, especially Mason, who helped us sort out bicycles and other odds and ends. The upstairs bar is also a great spot, and offers nice views (and beers). Despite the bar and backpacker clientele, the Phoenix was quiet and peaceful (though I suppose our room location had something to do with this. ) Highly recommended!
Money worth staying budget hostel”
It was a great stay during my visit to Shanghai and it's really a nice budget hotel with attentive staffs and comfort room. Although it's onle a hostel but it's a pleasant stay during my trip and it's near DaShiJie subway station and near to tourism attraction location such People Square, Nanjing Road, Shanghai Bund, etc so would like to recommend this hostel to all budget travellers to stay here when you visit Shanghai.
convenient, friendly, comfortable”
The staff is super friendly and helpful at Phoenix Hostel. The dorm rooms are clean with en suite bathrooms and cabinets for your luggage (you provide the lock). There is a rooftop bar and patio that was pretty nice with a friendly staff. Easy access to the subway and basically the halfway point between the Hong Qiao Train Station and the Pudong International Airport.
