“Calm down.”
Whenever I come to Taiwan, I always make sure to book a place with a private hot spring in the room, no matter where I stay. I have been coming to Taiwan regularly for just over 20 years now, and after such a long time, I no longer engage in sightseeing or avoid crowded places. My activities mostly revolve around purchasing sesame oil, which can only be found in Taiwan, enjoying local foods that I absolutely must try, and getting massages. Since I tend to stay for about a week, the time spent in my room increases automatically. This leads me to search for accommodations that have a cozy, comfortable room. Even if a hotel is new and beautiful, a cramped room where a large bed is squeezed in is unacceptable, and I can't stay in a room that doesn't allow me to unpack my suitcase. Considering factors like having a bath where I can enjoy the hot spring water, there are only three options in the Beitou hot spring area. One is a branch of a hotel located in Japan, so I'm not interested and have excluded it. Another one is a place I stayed at before, so I’ve excluded it this time. Therefore, I made a reservation at the Phoenix Pavilion Hot Spring Resort, which I had been interested in for a while, especially since they had a tatami-matted room for six available this time. It’s not exactly a short walk from Xinbeitou Station, but there’s a complimentary shuttle bus provided by the lodging that runs from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM, so it’s not an issue. If I want to be picked up, just one phone call and they arrive within five minutes. Today, they also provided transportation to and from the Beitou Night Market. The driver was very kind and gentle. The bath in the room is fantastic, with a tub that fills up with plenty of hot spring water. The concentration of the hot spring can vary by day, but today it’s so strong that there is sulfur collecting at the bottom of the tub. The water pressure for the shower is fine as well. However, the bath in the six-person room does not have a window, so it can get quite humid, and the bathroom lighting is a bit dim. The bed is large, the bedding is thin but wide, and the sheets are smooth and pleasant. They bring a large supply of towels every day, and the amenities are plentiful. They also provide a daily supply of 550ml bottles of mineral water for each guest. The noise level is a bit high, but the air conditioning works well. There is also a fan, so the cool air reaches even the area where the bed is. The TV has a few Japanese channels, with around two to three options available. There is no elevator, so if elderly guests wish to stay on the second floor, sending an email in advance will typically get a quick response. My parents are older, so I had previously requested Room 202. Rooms 201 and 202 are the lowest levels, and starting from Room 203, the height is about three floors up, which may be difficult for those with knee problems. Room 201 is likely for two to three guests. The walls are a bit thin, and conversations outside the room can be heard quite clearly. Fortunately, it seems that there aren’t many people using the hotel inappropriately, which is a relief. Breakfast is included, consisting of Taiwanese home-style dishes. There are no juices, milk, or soup. The staples are porridge, steamed buns without fillings, and thinly sliced toast, accompanied by a few varieties of Taiwanese home-style sides. The toast comes with margarine instead of butter and jam. There’s also a coffee machine in the lobby that grinds beans for use. Plus, they offer sweet hot soy milk. My favorite is the steamed bun without filling. There is also a large public bath, which guests can use for free; however, it requires at least two people to use it. Swimwear is not needed. The smoking area is located just outside to the left of the front desk where an ashtray is provided. There are many mosquitoes during this season, which has been a bit troublesome for my mother, who is a light smoker. There’s a small convenience store within a five-minute walk. It’s a bit tiring due to the slope on the way, but it's manageable. While the building itself is old and there are some inconveniences regarding location and facilities, the kindness of the staff at the front desk and the shuttle drivers is exceptional. The warmth they show, which is not just by the book, truly made for a delightful and enjoyable trip.
