Agoda Unveils 2023 Annual New Horizons List for Indonesia

Digital travel platform Agoda today released its inaugural ‘New Horizons’ list, featuring up-and-coming destinations in Indonesia. This study, comparing year-on-year search data, highlights lesser-known spots experiencing growth in interest from the travellers.

“While Indonesia’s most popular destinations continue to attract attention, we’ve observed an increase in searches for some lesser-known spots over the past year,” said Gede Gunawan, Senior Country Director – Indonesia at Agoda. “Our aim is to shed light on Indonesia’s hidden gems, appealing to the evolving aspirations of travellers seeking new experiences and paths less trodden.”

Leading the pack is Anyer, witnessing a 52% surge in searches, followed closely by Balikpapan at 47%. Bandar Lampung, Palembang, and Bekasi also make notable appearances with increases of 43%, 41%, and 40% respectively. The inclusion of Bandar Lampung and Palembang reflects a burgeoning interest in Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty, while Bekasi’s urban charm has captured the attention of those seeking new urban experiences.

Located on the western coast of Java, Anyer offers opportunities for relaxation, water sports, and family-friendly activities. Its historical sites, such as the Anyer lighthouse and remnants of the Anyer-Panarukan Road, add cultural appeal. Proximity to Jakarta makes Anyer a convenient getaway, and its resorts cater to various preferences and budgets. Breathtaking sunsets and coastal charm draw both local and international visitors, offering a rich and enjoyable vacation experience.

Positioned just 110 km from Samarinda, Balikpapan is attractive due to its gorgeous beaches, thick jungles, and diverse wildlife. In addition, Balikpapan provides cultural attractions and acts as a starting point for exploring the rest of East Kalimantan. The city serves both business and leisure travellers with its continual infrastructural development and hosting of corporate events, making it a diverse destination in the Indonesian archipelago.

Situated in the southern region of Sumatra, Bandar Lampung serves as a base to explore the region’s stunning scenery, including the well-known Krakatoa volcano and the Way Kambas National Park, which is highly regarded for its diverse array of species. Its historical sites, like Kiluan Bay and the Museum of Lampung, provide a diverse cultural experience. With a rich cultural past, beach charm, and easy access to natural wonders, Bandar Lampung is a desirable destination for tourists seeking a varied and interesting experience in Indonesia.

Known for its rich culinary traditions and historical significance, Palembang is a rising destination for tourists exploring Indonesia’s rich cultural diversity. Historical sites like the Ampera Bridge and Musi River, coupled with the city’s renowned cuisine such as model (noodle soup) and pempek (fishcake), attracts tourists. Historical sites like Kemaro Island and the Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Museum provide insights into the city’s vibrant past.

Bekasi‘s proximity to Jakarta makes it an ideal destination for short-term visits. Rapid urbanization has led to the development of contemporary facilities, retail centres, and entertainment venues, offering an urban experience. The city’s gastronomic landscape, local markets, and cultural attractions add to its allure, providing a range of experiences for tourists exploring this vibrant Indonesian city.

“Our Indonesia New Horizons list reflects the evolving interests of travellers in discovering the diverse and rich experiences Indonesia has to offer. From serene retreats to cultural hotspots, these destinations are gaining popularity,” concluded Gede Gunawan.
