Japan – the hottest international destination for Aussie solo travelers
Japan is the top international destination for Aussie solo travelers – accounting for nearly a fifth of all solo bookings from Australia in 2017.
Overall, solo travel amongst Aussies has increased by 14% in the last three years, with the growth trend veering towards international (20%), over domestic (8%).
Agoda’s Global Director for Brand and Communications, Andrew Edwards, explains: “As the far-flung corners of the world are becoming easier to reach, travellers are more willing to experience destinations with the freedom that comes from travelling alone.”
Fujikawaguchiko, in the foothills of Mount Fuji, saw an 84% increase in solo Aussie travellers in just the last year. With its breathtaking views of Mount Fuji and stunning autumn leaves, combined with the solitude of being in the mountains, it’s a solo traveler’s dream. Add fresh, local cuisine and relaxing hot springs, and you’ve got the ideal destination for those looking to relax and enjoy their own company.
Many of the other top growing solo travel destinations in Japan are also known for their beautiful seasonal scenery – Kyoto for the annual cherry blossom festival, Hakone for hot springs in the snow during winter, and Sapporo for the ski resorts nearby.
“With food and accommodation options for every budget, hospitable locals, and diverse experiences on offer, Japan is the perfect solo travel destination. In recent years, we’ve seen the rising popularity of capsule hotels catering for solo travelers who are wanting a cheap and easy way to travel around Japan solo,” comments Edwards.
