Agoda, one of the world’s fastest growing online travel agents (OTAs), today released its National Day Getaway 2018 study, revealing that travelers from Vietnam are saying ‘sawadee-ka’ to Bangkok in droves during the long weekend that kicks-off September.
The nearby metropolis, which boasts incredible shopping, amazing cultural destinations and one of the world’s most heralded cuisines, along with affordable access and a great selection of accommodation for all budgets, has proven too big a draw for Vietnamese to resist this year. The bustling city topped the national ‘top destination’ chart, ahead of domestic destination favorites.
Travelers opting to stay at home for the last public holiday of 2018 have, unsurprisingly, opted to while away the summer heat at Vietnam’s famed beaches. Residents of southern Vietnam will flock to nearby Vung Tau, while both central and northern Vietnamese travelers are opting for Danang and neighboring Hoi An.
Phan Thiet, Nha Trang and Phu Quoc continue the beach theme, occupying fifth, sixth and ninth place respectively. The cool-off theme continues with mountain retreats Dalat (4) and Sapa (10) both in the nationwide top ten, while major cities Ho Chi Minh City (2) and Hanoi (8) round out the nation’s top domestic getaways.
City-breaks have dominated overseas destinations. In addition to Bangkok, others that have proven popular include Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, where the myriad of entertainment and cultural offerings, coupled with short travel times over the three-day weekend and visa free entry, have seen the cities prove attractive to Vietnamese families and travelers. Seoul and Taipei are also popular international destinations for visitors looking to travel slightly further afield.
