The town puts a great effort to both re-build but at the same time give tourists and idea of what happened and a very positive sign that the town wants to get back on their feet. We were surprised by the peacefulness / quietness of the city, most people spend their time at bars and restaurants and the streets seemed quite empty. There are some good eatery places and the people are really nice. Take toe local tram to visit all around. In sum, it is a place to stop by if you are visiting the south island, but it you have a tight agenda, it's ok to spend just a day here and then get on your way to see this great marvelous country :)

I did hear of a tour group that arrived there but didn't know there had been an earthquake and wondered why it looked as it did - tour guides and tourists - do your homework! If you stay in the centre, the first thing you notice are the blank spaces everywhere, the utter destruction of the earthquakes. Then as you look around you discover remnants of old buildings, beautifully designed new buildings being built, the fantastic new Margaret Mahy playground which was packed with people of all ages when I saw it, the newly reopened art gallery, the 'Gap Fillers' - artworks or play spaces set up in the rubble to amuse, delight or inspire e.g. the dance floor complete with mirror ball and lights. You also need to get out into the red zone suburbs to see the enormous parkland that now exists where once there were houses - only the trees remain. The cafés and shops in Christchurch are multiplying all the time and the food, bars that I went to were excellent. Go there and be part of the recovery of Christchurch - especially if you enjoy the arts!

BUt essentially you can do a tour of the old city centre by yourself in a car within 1 hour: everything worthwhile seeing has been destroyed and is in various states of being demolished. It will be another 10 years before the city centre is worth a trip. The outskirts however are beautiful. Go on the Gondola, and enjoy the amazing views from there. Go to Lyttleton Harbour, where you can do fun activities New Zealand is famous for. The people are amazingly friendly and, even by Kiwi standards, more relaxed here.

Its a great place to get cheap airfares, grab a campervan, motorhome or car from. There is heaps of rental vehicles and reasonable price. A great place to make a start of your NZ driving trip, or the end of it. There are lots of budget hotels near the airport for late arrivals or early morning departures. Within 30 minutes and beyond there is so much to do outside of Christchurch. Drive to heaps of adventurous and beautiful places. Dunedin 4 hrs on the coastal route, or about the same time to gorgeous Queenstown, even closer 90 minutes is the fantastic Mt Hutt skiing area; great for first time skiers as not superficial or competitive.

Small retail and food businesses are sprouting from the wreckage, but its a long long way off what the city used to be (from pictures) Many of the buildings are still held up by scaffolding or cordoned off completely.
