Best stay in Sri Lanka”
I stayed in Sanjis for one night and was, by far, my best stay in Sri Lanka, not only in terms relative to price. The personnel was overcaring, the cabana was perfect and the open air shower was great. Highly recommended. It must be said that it is far from Tangalle. But I assume that anybody booking it will already know that.
The huts are well built, with outdoor bathroom and WCs, and the staff were exceptional in their care, friendliness, and attitutude. We were there during quiet season, yet the team went out their way to cook us a variety of dishes beyond what we'd ordered, experimented with new cocktail ideas, and even took us canoeing on a nearby lake - all this just so that we would see and enjoy Sri Lanka as much as they do. Highly recommend.
Stunning Oceanic Beach”
The Hotel's staff is really something to highlight, they are always smiling and ready to help you, The food is very good, super fresh with high quality and well cooked and presented, The location is Fantastic, the beach is a Paradise, It is hard to get there because there is no signals on the way, so better use a GPS, but still it isn't easy, In general, Facilities are a bit poor and the lack of reception is a bit disappointing
Lovely relaxing place but room for improvement! ”
We had a very relaxing time here given the secluded location and private beach, also really enjoyed the homecooked food for breakfast and dinner, although sometimes the portions at dinnertime could've been a little bigger or there could've been more choice as nowhere else to go! The biggest letdown for us was the fact that there were no lunch options other than them making us sandwiches - we definitely didn't come to Sri Lanka to eat sandwiches so not having the option for local food was disappointing and the nearby options are very scarce...we actually walked to a few places and were turned away or nobody was there even serving. The same applies to drinking water which you have to pay for if you want more of - they give you a bottle each per day but this definitely wasn't enough especially in that heat! I think improving on these aspects could make the whole experience af Sanjis more enjoyable as we found them to be a bit frustrating and headed into Tangalle on a tuk tuk instead!
Idyllic location but not good value for money”
Amazing location by a wild and quiet beach, new stylish and spacious bungalows with very nice outdoor shower. However... Unsatisfying food, bland and boring, served cold. No menu choice which would be fine if it was tasty and fresh. Had much better home cooked diners at cheap home stays. Given the high price, lack of facilities in room. No need for AC nor TV, but coffee/tea maker and minifridge would be nice for this price class. No lunch menu. No drinks menu. But overall very relaxing stay, with friendly staff.
Perfect location to calm down and just relax. Nothing close by so really perfect for reading a book at the pool or on the beach. Perfect for having nice beach walks with your boyfriend 😊 We loved breakfast and also dinner. Was delicious. Definitive a place where we would come back to. Young dogs were annoying. One of them destroyed the new flip flops of my boyfriend.
Helpful but not suitable for young kids”
Dangerous beach for youngsters and a deep pool on a raised platform made it too difficult to stay with a 3 year old baby. But staff and rooms were excellent and staff were accommodating and understanding of our concerns.
Paradise but very basic accommodation”
We had a great time at Sanjis but it was a very primitive experience and not what you would expect from the reviews and website. Good points are the kitchen staff, the food although very limited, and the seaside location and swimming pool. The rooms themselves are extremely basic with no chairs or places to set down anything you may have. The bathrooms are outdoors and aren't cleaned very well. Ours had a mirror full of toothpaste from previous guests and some rubbish in the rocks surrounding. We didn't have hot water in our shower and there weren't any insect repellent devices in the room as promised. The internet is intermittent. The staff do not give you any sort of induction on what's available so hard to plan excursions from Sanjis. We were stuck there for 2 days trying to arrange our own vehicle. They did arrange eventually but we lost a day out. I would recommend Sanjis as long as you know what you are getting and the price was higher than I paid for a Sri Lankan 4-star hotel with exceptional service and facilities. This is a very basic 2 or 3 star with almost no service compared to other experiences in Sri Lanka.
Great experience - under construction”
Sanjis is located at an isolated beach that lets your Robinson Crusoe phantasies come true. Staff is very friendly and helpful and food is among the finest we tasted in Sri Lanka. Even at breakfast they serve a great variety of local dishes and at sunset they move tables for candle light dinner on the beach. On most days it is difficult to swim in the sea but now there is a large pool which was yet to be finished at the time of our stay. And here is where our dissatisfaction comes in. When we arrived we found our newly constructed bungalow empty except for a bed frame. After 24 hours of travelling and a much delayed taxi transfer, the least you would expect is an excuse and a cold drink while waiting for the place to be populated with mattress, linen and towels. Unfortunately we got none of this and during our stay we had to ask repeatedly for basics such as towels or door key. Other amenities such as a safe or warm water were never provided during our six nights there, not to mention the half-finished bathroom. This was clearly not the place we seen on the photos in the internet. All the more we were disappointed when Sanji, the owner, offered us a discount that we felt was far from adequate and he was not willing to discuss his offer. Apart from our unfortunate experience we are sure this will be a great place once finished, although in our view the room rate is far overpriced. Later we found that we paid the same rate in the great colonial hotel in Colombo where liveried butlers in white gloves open the doors for you.
Review of Sanjis The Seaside Cabanas Hotel”
This was a bad choice for a hotel. The location was practically ipossible to find -- nobody in the area heard of the place, there were no signs on the road indicating where it is located, there was no phone contact for the local hotel (there was only a German phone number!). We had to use landmarks ("down the road from the Tuk-tuk factory, look for the sign for 'Good Karma', continue down a mud path and eventually you'll find it"). When we got there we inquired whether a second room would be available. The guy there didn't know, he needed to contact "the boss" (who wasn't there). We called the boss's number a few times, and gave up. We would rate the hotel a '5' at the best
Very good location, I mean it's not in town center, but steps to beach. Fall asleep and wake up listening to waves is quite nice experience. Staff is very attentive, food is delicious (we booked half board, didn't expect much on food based on their room rate. But unexpectedly the food is yummy and big portion.) To people who don't like insects, it could be a challenge though. The carbana is designed open air. We would have appreciated if the bedding quality were better. Overall the two nights staying there is pleasant. The only unpleasant thing, though not the hotel's fault, was the driver they arranged for us. First of all, he drove very dangerously. We had several drivers before, he's driving skill and habit is bad. When when arrive Mirrisa, he asked us if we wonna go highway, we said no problem. He said it would be Rp500 more, we asked him why he didn't mention when we confirm the price with him, he couldn't give a reason. We were not very happy and ask him to go normal way, he kept saying that highway is faster and normal way is too crowded and cannot drive.(highway toll is RP200 one way, he wants to charge us Rp500 for this!) he didn't agree to drive on until we agree to pay Rp200. If the management of Sangis can see this review, please reconsider before recommending this driver to other customers.
Hit and miss with food. Nice beech. ”
I found the hotel over priced. The evening meal was very poor, we were served some fish that looked like it had been cooked for hours with head and tail still on! Looked like something out of a horror movie. On the plus side the hotel is in a great location, very nice beach, and friendly staff.
Quiet, idyllic beach stay”
The Sanjis Seaside Cabana is a small quiet beach hotel/cabana at Ranna beach. It is a little difficult to find but well worth the effort once you are there. The staff are simply fantastic and nothing is too much trouble for them. The rooms are wonderful with a big 4 poster bed with nets and an outdoor (but still part of the room) shower which is divine.
Great place for relaxing!”
Back to the medieval”
Sanjis a hotel for people who love the superficial or young couples which are sufficient unto oneself. When you drive through the entrance of the hotel the first impression will be positive. However on the second view you felt as if you had been taken back to the medieval. There is no air-condition, no TV, no WLan-connection and the mosquito net over the bed, which is provided with big holes, offerts just a little protection against mosquitos. The hotel lies directly at the ocean but the "magnifecent" view from the romm goes to a completely overgrown neigbour estate. Who now thinks: "Well, then we will take a nice bath in the ocean." will suffer the next disappointment. The breakers are so strong here that one would risk his life by going in there. The owner who is more interested in his profit than in the wellbeing of his guests, told me during a call to Germany were he lives and work that it is the request of his guests that there is no TV and air-condition. I visited much cheaper hotels in Sri Lanka were this things will be disposal to the guests. Who does not want to use a TV or air-condition must not use it. I found very good and cheaper hotels in Colombo, Habarana, Kandy und Ella were the well being of the guests stands in the centre. I would like to come back to this country but I would not book the Sanjis. But I have to say that the service was outstanding. They tried everything to keep the guest comfortable.
Great place with even better service”
With only 4 apartments in 2 bungalows you are sure that its newer crowded here. This is the place to relaxe, read a book, walk on the beach or have romantic dinners on the beach in the night. If there is something missing, or something you want to do, (visit the national park, turtle watching etc etc) the staff helps you and arrange it. A great thanks to all and especially the manager who takes care of you. Highly recomended. One of our favorites in Sri Lanka.
