Back in the day, staying at a planter’s bungalow was a very special treat. Besides the immaculate gardens, you looked forward to excellent food, with the veg coming straight from the gardens and milk straight from the cows - and this was way before organic became a buzz word to get rich quick. You had an ‘Appu’ who was a chef and so much more and a ‘Boy’ who ran the house. You even had to dress in formal attire (as kids, this was the equivalent of our Sunday Best) for dinner, which was at 8;30pm precicely. Drinks were served from 7:00pm onwards. While things at Glendevon Bungalow were less formal, the ambiance was pretty much the same. The staff were actually beyond excellent, the rooms were comfortable and well appointed with goose down pillows and fresh, fluffy duvets. There were two minor issues that marred our experience; the first was an overbooking which had happened through no fault of ours, but the manager was pretty pushy about moving us out - we refused to leave and he backed off. The second is the location. Whilst the house itself is superbly located at the edge of a Forrest, the roads leading to the bungalow are in a deplorable state. This would be fine if you spent all your time at the bungalow, but not, if like us, you had places to go and things to do in the surrounding areas. Overall though I would have no hesitation recommending Gendevon to anyone. If nothing else, just to experience a real roaring fire, cosying up your bedroom for the evening. Excellent!
