Stay here for the hotspring
The surroundings were scenic. The food was awesome and the onsite hot spring was great. Nothing to complain about, except maybe that the beds could have been abit more comfortable.

Good breakfast, good location
Ranzan hotel has good location. It is peaceful and quiet. It is easy to reach many tourist spots. The hotel has nice Japanese style garden. The breakfast is very nice. You have to reserve for dinner if you want to eat at the hotel.

Nice hotel but inconvenient location
Comfortable room and bed. Well equipped Onsen in hotel basement. Friendly staff with enough English. Good location to explore Asishmya.
Inconvenient location
The hotel is inconvenient to use as a base for exploring Kyoto itself, particularly if using the JR line. The JR stop is at least 20' from the hotel. Arishmya is totally dead after 5pm and the walk back at night time through the deserted streets was quite uncomfortable. However, the hotel would be fine to use as a base for exploring Arishmya itself. The (non JR) subway stop was a bit closer to the hotel, and the bus stop was closer still, so the hotel would be a bit more convenient for people using those modes of transport.

Hotel in a Picturesque Town
- rooms are big - quiet and picturesque around the hotel
- all shops and resturants around the hotels closed by 5pm - abt 20 mins walk from the JR Saga-Arashiyama station
The hotel is located near to Togetsukyo Bridge that spans the Hozu River. The scenery is magnificent over there. However, the hotel is about 20 mins walk from the nearest JR station. When I arrived at the JR station with my luggage, I was not so sure of the route. Furthermore, it was raining. I took a taxi and it cost a flat rate of about Y600. The town is very quiet after 5pm.

ENJOYABLE STAY
-Serene setting -Helpful, courteous staff -Large rooms -Pleasant decore -Onsen in the hotel -Great price for the accomodations
-Hard beds
We've stayed in Kyoto several times before, but this is the first time we've stayed at the Ranzan Hotel. The hotel's location northwest of the city center makes it a quiet place to stay. Although there isn't much in the immediate vicinity of the hotel that stays open past 20:00, it's a ten minute walk to the streetcar station and a 25 minute ride into the center of Kyoto. One point to remember; the streetcar station is located on the bottom floor of a building with other businesses and is easy to miss. We missed it the first time. We felt it was a great place to stay for the price. The staff was always pleasant and helpful. The onsen in the hotel really put the finishing touches on what we already considered to be a terrific hotel. They even provide a written guide on how to properly wear the yukata the hotel provides for use to and from the onsen. The only negative thing we noticed is the beds are a little too hard. However, we will definitely stay here again when we go to Kyoto!

Good and bad time here
Lovely garden and nice public bath. Arashiyama is my favourite location in Kyoto
bed bugs! Only in my bed (room 902, next to the bathroom) No laundry service.
This is a really nice hotel. I love the food, the people, the area, etc. The garden is just lovely. It's a gem. The travel distance to central Kyoto is only 15 minutes, which is quite convenient, if you are in no big rush. BUT my only bad experience is the bed bugs and rashes I had from the bed I slept in. We stayed in a twin room. My partner in the other bed didn't have the bugs. So, it's just my bed.

Peaceful retreat near Arashiyama temples
Lovely quiet surroundings, free bicycle use handy for temple hopping and transport to station and gorgeous baths complete with jacuzzi area.
Access to hotel from Kyoto (via Keifuku line to Arashiyama) involves numerous train changes and is hard work if travelling with heavy luggage. A better option is to travel on the JR line local trains from Kyoto to Saga Arashiyama station which is under 1km walk. A useful shortcut is through the grounds of the Tenryu-ji temple.
This hotel is in a lovely spot near the river and minutes from Tenryu-ji temple. Rooms are generously proportioned (we stayed in a Western style room) compared to many other Japanese hotels. The baths are located in the basement and open until midnight. We didn't eat at the hotel and after dark, food options in the area are pretty limited. The hotel does have several vending machines including pot-noodle options. Our strategy was to eat in Kyoto and then take the 20 minute train ride back to the hotel afterwards. All, in all, a very comfortable, roomy, quiet stay and reasonable value for money.

relaxation after the Kyoto temples
lovely gardens, peaceful, gorgeous japanese bath and free bicycles!
it would be nice if small meals were available in the restaurant of the hotel without pre booking, we had to survive on potnoodle from the vending machine! The small town does not offer many eating opportunities after 8 or 9 pm.
The hotel is located on the northwest side of Kyoto and the 20 minute journey on the train is well worth it to escape from the busy noisy town after a days sightseeing. One is greeted in Arishiyama with fresh air, a lovely river and intersting walks, its very own temple and much more. The accomodation is very comfortable and the staff are superbly helpful even if one can't soeak a word of Japanese! We very much liked the relaxed bungalow style of the hotel with view of the lovely garden. We would highly recommend this hotel to travellers who like to have a bit of peace and relaxation during their travels.
