Where to stay in Gifu Prefecture
Gifu Prefecture hotels & accommodations

This was the first hotel we stayed during our 15 days trip in Japan and it was the best. It's walking distance to Takayama hotel and easy to get around Takayama. The breakfast was good with selection variety. We weren't sure why most of the restaurants were closed on Monday night (only a few were opened) so, if you decide to eat at the hotel then, it's best to reserve...

Best location, 2 Min. from Train and Busstation. Then 10 MIn. to sightseeing/old district of town.Great SPA, very clean and modern.Good Breakfast, asian/western choice. Family Mart in 3 Min. distance. Very attentive and friendly staff, english speaking. We would definitly book this hotel again. Good to make a day oder halfday trip to Shirakawa-Go and to other areas aro...

Thoroughly enjoyed my stay and it is so close to the Takayama JR station and the Nohi and Express Highway bus station is next door to the JR station. The staff were welcoming and very helpful, the room was spotless and guests can leave luggage after check out before continuing to their next destination. The hotel,is walking distance from so many restaurants, cafes and ...

I booked the hotel for my parents. They were satisfied. Their room was rather small though. Unfortunately the weather there was rainy and cold, the small room wasn't too well-coming:( The food at the restaurant was pretty good. The staff spoke & understood minimum English so be patient. Do be knowledgeable in this part of Japan, get as much info at the tourist c...

I booked a Japanese tatami style bedroom with 6 futons. The room is very spacious with cozy corner to pour your tea before exploring town. The main spot is within walking reach & it's like 5 minutes walk from JR/ Bus center (Takayama). The open air onsen is the best here. Highly recommended!

Hotel staff were service oriented. We were welcomed as we drove in. Our reservation was confirmed by the staff even before we stepped into the hotel. One of the staff escorted us to our room, orientated us on the layout of the hotel and the 3 onsens. The hotel is near the station and next to the river. Deco was a little worn but clean. We were there on a weekday and mo...

loved the hotel. nice small japanese style garden. and the hot spring is clean and spacious. provide many selection on all hotel bath accessories, and skin care products. top of all, great customer service! the hotel manager gave us a ride to a restaurant for lunch, n recommended many different restaurants. great japanese style breakfast, but the price didn't inclu...

From the very beginning that one of the hoteliers was awaiting us in the freezing November cold, this was an excellent stay. The hotel doesn't carry the name 'Ryokan' but in everything it sets a very high quality of (Japanese styled) service, which means extremely friendly behavior of the staff. The food, and the explanation of it, was of a very high level, and though ...

Very close to Meitetsu station& 5-7mins walk from Gifu(JR)station. Many shops &restaurants nearby. Good facilities. Staffs were nice. But you can’t check in early or check out late, hotel will charge 1000yen for 1hour. You really need to wait till check in time, can’t even check in even you just reach there 10or 15mins earlier.

- stayed in a twin room for 2 nights because at time of booking, they had no more double room. - impressive!!! large large room! equivalent of about 3 regular sized double room of a business hotel in japan. even bigger than the other hotel's twin room. - good size bathroom, fully size tub, vanity bench is big enough for 2 sinks. and very clean. - comfortable bed, b...

The hotel is not big so its cosy. The rooms are big and comfortable. The hotel offers shuttle service from the train station to the hotel and vice versa. However, the shuttle services are scheduled. So plan your trip to the centre of Takayama ahead. There is a family mart opposite the hotel. Will stay in the hotel again should I visit Takayama again.

The ryokan/hotel had a lot of positives: food was way above our expectation (we booked half-board and both dinner and breakfast blew us away!); the historic building and the location were stunning; room was large and very comfy; service was also outstanding; and the staff even gave us a little honeymoon present (we tried not to make a big deal out of the stay being a h...

This is the best ryokan that we stayed. It's an excellent Ryokan where it is easily accessible from the Takayama station, morning market, the historical houses and other places of interests. We enjoyed our 2 nights stay in the Tanabe Ryokan as we were given a real ryokan experience in Tanabe - from the time we entered to the time we left. All the staff in the ryokan ...

From our lodging experiences in Tokyo, Nagano Prefecture and Gifu Prefecture during our two-week vacation, Oyado Yoshinoya certainly tops the list. Firstly, the minshuku (B&B) is housed in a 110-year-old townhouse and Mr Watanabe is the third generation owner. Though the house has gone through extensive renovation, especially its interior, it has maintained some orig...

We visited Takayama as a family with young children and J-Hopper provides one of the better services and value on my trip to Japan (we stayed in 4 other locations). When we arrived we were greeted by friendly staff (shout out to Keith, Ian and Matsu). J-Hopper has an elevator if you have bulky luggage to bring up to higher floors. We were given a spacious tatami room w...

It is a kind of unique experience. Pity i did not try their onsen. I stayed only for a short 1 night, but room is pretty spacious with private restroom, and separate small bathroom with a tub. However, inside a cabinet once you opened the door quite dusty. Need more cleanliness in that area. The rest is just fine. Breakfast is unique but talking about quality it is ...

They serve us with superb service. We arrived 10 o'clock at night but they picked us up at train station. We booked hotel with dinner but they were informed with breakfast only. Anyway, they still served us dinner without argument. Even, we checked out already, they still gave us a ride to many places without our beg. Best hotel ever.

We stayed there for 5 days, the breakfast was very awesome. It takes like 7 minutes walk from the hotel to the Gifu station. There are 2 main station in Gifu, which are Gifu station (JR operate), another one is Meitetsu operate. In case you get off at Gifu meitetsu, it will take 15 minutes walk to the hotel. However, from the Chubu airport, there is a direct meitet...

Ryukan Asunaro was one of our best experiences during our Japan trip. The staff was so polite and informative about the rules around the hotel (these rules weren't the imposing kinds trust me) Every detail about this traditional Inn made you feel and live like a local Japanese - such as, taking off your shoes at the entrance of the Inn, eating your dinner wearing kimo...

The location of the hotel is around 10-15 minutes walk away from the train station. However, I don't mind the walk because the scenery is beautiful and the walk is pretty relaxing. If you are walking, you can stop by the public spring near the bridge and dip your feet in or if you have swimsuit, you can dip your whole body in that public hot spring. Receptionist was s...

Wished i knew how great this hotel sooner. There is a sense of warm hospitality and the little details really do matter which made my stay here so welcoming. Wish i could stay longer. The service was outstanding. Very warm personal touch. Highly recommended to families and couples alike. Good onsen waters and view too. Upon arrival at Gero station, proceed to the tourist information centre and the staff there would contact the hotel to pick you up. We were then whisked to the hotel in a small bus; the hotel is not that near although can't be consid...

Was the best stay throughout our trip. Stayed 3nights in Superior Japanese room, window facing the Japan Alps. All amenities and daily treats. Futon with bean pillow was great for the neck. Check-in/out was efficient. 1 staff showed us the facilites(thank you, Mr Fujii) and while luggages were sent to room. Booked private onsen which was semi-indoor/outdoor. Y2...

I am a big fan of K's House in Japan. This time I heard they have several branches in Japan and will open a branch in New Zealand! Each K's House has own concept! I've been to one in Kyoto and this time in Takayama. Both I love them 200%. Takayama is famouse its gorgeously marbled beef, similar to Wagyu. Many restaurants around K's House offer that beef menu but very e...

Really liked the place, will definitely stay again. Amazing views of Takayama, park at the door steps, amazing onsen onsight, very good traditional breakfast. Felt like real Japan. Very nice staff. I am coming back to Takayama, planning to stay there again. One of the best places I've stayed in Japan on this trip. It is a walk steep uphill, so if you have big suitcases...
Cheap places to stay in Gifu Prefecture

Loved how they gave you discounts to other things like the spa across the street. Staff was super friendly and kind. They also have the best bike rental service in Takayama. Renting bikes from them are super cheap, and you can pay for the service after using the bike if no one is there. Just sign your name in the guest book and pay later. The beds were made for you! T...

Had all the conveniences I needed in a hotel room. Staff was always helpful. Facilities always clean. Access to refrigerator and hot water at all times. Not close to station, but very near Hida no Sato, a lovely recreated village attraction with bilingual signage in English/Japanese so very informative. Nice neighborhood! Quiet and safe. I've stayed st all kinds of acc...

An ideal, cost-efficient place to stay and discover Shirakawa-go. The staff were incredibly helpful, going as far as to book my transportation back to Kanazawa for me. The sizeable ‘lounge’ area with WiFi was a great place to get some work done while enjoying affordable beverages and a host of Japanese snacks. The facilities were very clean. I highly recommend KEI to a...

The hostel is located less than 10 mins walk from train station. We booked a private room which turn out to have a nice views facing the garden and roadside. The host are very friendly and helpful. They gave us a map that shows all the nearby amenities. Highly recommended for budget travellers.

Ouka Hotel Takayama is the best hotel we stayed so far in Japan. It is located quite convenient, about 10 min straight walk from Takayama Station, on the main road of Takayama. Right beside the hotel, there is Seven Eleven where you could buy snacks or quick grab breakfast. The first thing you notice is how it feels like home, when you enter the hotel, they provide a s...

It's akin to staying at a Japanese homestay. The place is very homey. Very basic facilities but more than good enough for a 3 nights stay. You can use the kitchen and fridge but you need to clean up after that. The owner and family, together with the staff, is very friendly and accommodating. The place is located in between the train station (bus station is just next t...

Overall I had a good stay at this ryokan. The traditional breakfast was really good, and if you want to try it you need to make sure you reserve it with your stay. It’s served at 7:30am everyday in the dining room downstairs. The onsens are wonderful and I tried all three of them while I was there. They are open 24 hours, but they might be closed for cleaning between 8...

In general, for how much a night costs (about 2000 yen) and unlimited onsen use for the duration of the visit (for 700 yen), this was a good deal. We stayed for three nights and four days. The main problem came from the staff. We got the impression that the staff is trying to do too many things at once - run an onsen, run a guesthouse, run a restaurant, and run a mass...

Room was very spacious, reasonably clean (lots of dust under the dressing table), equipped with lots of facilities (good WIFI, fridge, huge TV, microwave, lots of toiletries). Big shopping mall just 2 minutes walk away. Gifu city is about 8km away. Staff were friendly, very quick to response to our queries and will use translation apps to communicate with us.

The host offered many recommendations for restaurants, shopping, sightseeing and activities in the area. I wish we had more time.to spend there! The room was clean and comfortable, and the common area with wood stove was very cozy. Kitchen was available to use as well. Thank you for a lovely time!

This is a great guesthouse; probably the best I've stayed in. The place is super clean. While the accommodation itself was great, the location was a little out about 10 minutes walk to the main attractions. However, public transport was easy to get to so getting around was still simple. The WiFi is strong. The room was great, very clean and a decent size. The bathroom...

We stayed in the mixed dorm for one night during the Spring Festival. I have to say this is one of the most aesthetically pleasing dorms I've ever stayed in. However, it is a mixed dorm so the snoring men kept me awake as well as the night light near the door most of the night. I suggest booking a family room or single room upstairs. Enjoyed hanging out in the common a...

Good hotel. Room was very clean and had a great view. Close to the train stations in Hashima. Unfortunately, there's not much in the immediate area, better if you have a bicycle or car. But it's an easy commute to Gifu by train where there are lots of shops and restaurants.

Very close to Meitetsu station& 5-7mins walk from Gifu(JR)station. Many shops &restaurants nearby. Good facilities. Staffs were nice. First off, if you take Nohi bus, the closest bus stop to get off is Hoshi no Kane mae. But if you enjoy hiking, you can get off at Nakao Kogen Guchi and then walk uphill for about 15 minutes while enjoying the beautiful scenery. The room is absolutely massive and comes with its own private onsen which is amazing. The staffs are very friendly. Because I had to leave ea...

We really enjoyed our stay here. The lady who runs the BB is what makes the place such a nice place to stay. She was always there to greet us and ask about our day - despite the language barrier. The only negative was the occasional smell of smoke - however we knew the place was smoking when we booked. I would stay here again.

we stayed 2 nights. super, super close to the Gifu train station - just over the bridge and round the corner. Family Mart and restaurants around the corner, too. seems more like a business hotel but have been welcomed as backpackers. rented bicycles for free.

We stayed there for 5 days, the breakfast was very awesome. It takes like 7 minutes walk from the hotel to the Gifu station. Private onsen was the best thing overall. The public one was also great, coz they have limited number of rooms in the ryokan, there is always a quiet and relax atmosphere around. But we would only suggest this place to people who drive. Public transport is not very convienient, but that is what uou are looking for if u would like to find a private place.

We went Gifu for the first day of our trip and out of our prediction, the train was delayed by an unfortunate accident. While we were worrying to starve as we were going to check in later than 7, We find the kind driver was already waiting us at the station for long (despite we haven't book a car). We received a warm welcome from the manager and have our meal served im...

We been stayed in 5 stars hotels many times but It’s our first time stay at Ryokan. My Japanese friend highly recommended Ryokan Yatsusankan and it’s indeed the really amazing experience in terms of service level and dining experience. I wouldn’t tell much to fail your interest to explore. However, the outdoor onsen and private dining is something you couldn’t miss. An...

Wide selection for breakfast and dinner. Food was nice. Staff (Young man) was friendly and helpful. Had booked a room with open air bath, however the hotel received from booking.com with a normal room without open air bath. The staff tried to get 1 room from another sister hotel nearby but to no avail.

We loved the traditional feel of the hotel, and its seclusion - although being sandwiched between two roads means that you one is not entirely free of street noise from passing cars. It should however be noted that due to its location and the nature of the roads, at night there is very little if any traffic. The seclusion also means that alternative meal options are li...

We arrived the Tajime in the evening. The hotel is easy to find and identify, situated by the main road. The hotel is not new, but the room is clean and spacious. There is Onsen in the hotel. We didn't try it as we only stayed for 1 night. Breakfast is buffet style, filled with great varieties of both Japanese and Western food. The hotel is near the Toki outlet. ...

Sumiyoshi Ryokan is definitely an excellent place to stay if you want to experience staying at a traditional Japanese Ryokan. This place is 100 years old and it felt great to be part of the history. The old couple was very friendly. They spoke very little English, but regardless of that, we were very welcome and felt very much at home. There is an Onsen in the bath roo...

We stayed here for one night, enjoyed the buffet style breakfast and dinner. There were sufficient choices of food but quality was not the best, of course at this price level. Onsen facilities were well equipped like all other places in Japan; then we found a game corner which we enjoyed a lot. The hotel facilities were a bit worn out but again, if price is right, ...

From arriving to the hotel up to departing, all have been great and wonderful. It was the best service we have gotten from a hotel and the fact that it’s family run made a difference. The location is quite convenient (5-8 min walk from Nagoya JR station) and 2-5 min from Nagoya Metetsu station. In addition, the staff iare quite friendly and helpful to provide tra...

Baison is a charming small boutique ryokan with a mix of western and Japanese styled en-suite rooms. It is family-owned and there is a sense of old-world charm the moment you walk in. Best experience ever. Couldn't express how perfect is our experience in Wa no Sato Ryokan. Their staff are so nice and heart warming. Everything is settled and handled nicely and detailed. The comfortable hot spring hotel. The staff helpful and good manners. Very relaxing. The location is good. My granddaughter want to have the very pretty kimono which they ready for the kid to wear. They told us not in season. Can't buy this time.

In this sleepy town of Takayama, the Hidatei hanaougi shined like a star. Our family stayed in three Ryokans, this one was by far the best. First, they offer door to door service. They will pick you up from the Takayama station and take you back. The moment you arrive you are transported back to the Edo period of Japan, where service and respect are paramount. ...

Your Ultimate Gifu Travel Tips
To make the most of your Gifu adventure, there are a few insider tips to keep in mind. Understanding local customs can enhance your experience and help you connect with the culture. For instance, it's customary to bow when greeting someone, and saying “arigatou gozaimasu” (thank you very much) will be appreciated by locals. Additionally, when visiting temples or shrines, it's respectful to follow the prescribed etiquette, such as washing hands before entering.
Language can be a barrier, but many locals in Gifu are friendly and willing to assist. Learning a few basic phrases in Japanese can go a long way. Phrases like “sumimasen” (excuse me) and “eigo o hanasemasu ka?” (do you speak English?) can help facilitate communication. For those who may not be fluent, translation apps can also be handy for navigating menus and signs.
