Where to stay in Oita Prefecture
Oita Prefecture hotels & accommodations

Spacious lugage compartment for us when we come in early and late check out. Very helpful and very friendly staff.hotel onsen on 3rd floor is huge and awesome! 5min from train station and awesome market under the tunnel/bridge while walking from station to hotel. One station away to Oita, another place for sightseeing. This hotel even loan nobile phone in the room!

The best hotel I've ever been. If you are looking for a nice place in Oita, this one is the best one you can find. The onsen inside the hotel is very huge and with different types of baths. Try to visit it during the night, you can see the stars while you're taking a relaxing bath. The buffet restaurant is a little bit expensive but the food is excellent. You are allow...

Extremely comfy and quality customer services. Private hotspring was excellent and room was spacious for couple visitors. Meal was delicious and well prepared. View from hotel was also breathtaking One suugestion: can improve on Yufuin Station shuttle pick up service such as stationing shuttle at JR station to pick up customer with ref to train schedule. They can arra...

The hotel is in the same building as the local bus departure station, so it is convenient to check bus times and board bus to travel around Beppu / Yufuin / Oita. The hotel itself has clean room, english speaking staffs, fast wifi, onsen hot spring (indoor and outdoor). The negative points are rooms with no sea view and no free coffee / tea packs.

A bit pricy but definitely worth the money. The location is about 5 minutes by taxi from the Yufuin Train Station...about 700yen. Located around 10 minutes walk from Lake Kirin & famous shopping street. The room is actually a villa with tatami area, 2 Onsen, bedroom & bathroom. We stayed in the Karin villa which is very well designed. The breakfast & bungo steak dinner...

This Ryokan is very good! 1. Private traditional bath (Best thing !) 2. Good dining (Gaiseki and breakfast are very recommendable) 3. Good room state (Provides tea&sweets also, and other miscellaneous) 4. Very close to important tourism points and shops but at the same time very silence and country side. It's amazing ! Only problem is their english skills. But t...

I never wrote review but the stay here drove me to write this review because it was such an amazing stay! The best stay I have ever had! The room is large, the private hot spring is not big yet it was soooooooo great! great for relax and the house itself is such a beautiful traditional one! The breakfast was just alright (wish they provide dinner though). I am already ...

The hotel lobby is cozy decorated with many crafted wooden ceiling and furniture. The staffs are not many but you can tell they make the best of their jobs. It's my first time trying Japanese 會席料理, we are satisfied with chef's hard work. All dishes were like an art piece. Thanks!! Hot spring are amazing, you can enjoy the quietness and stars above the sky! Wonderfu...

The hotel itself is located pretty far from the main part of Beppu. We had rented a car during our trip to Japan so this wasn't a big problem for us, but I would figure that people without a car would have to get a cab to get to the hotel. Aside from the location, other aspects of the hotel are just wonderful. At check-in, we were welcomed by the staff with warm to...

Trip 9th to 14th Nov, Yufu, Beppu and Hakata. First night staying at Hotel Baien. Late check in at 7:15pm due to highway bus fully booked until 5:00pm. Once check in, we were brought to the dinning floor! (They know us..... we are starving!). Dinner was so nice! Around 9:00pm, finished our dinner, we were shown to the facilities (hot spring area) and our room (Japanese...

We stayed for 2 nights - I, my wife and our 3-year old girl are very happy with everything - the room may be a bit small with no shower/bath in room (only wash basin and toilet) but we can see great mountain view and my daughter loves wearing yukata and play in the room. The futons are nice, clean and comfortable. The meals were all excellent and we can feel how ingr...

We at first booked another hotel by 2018.June, but the other hotel changed its policy without noticing us that no child is allowed anymore. I found it just 1 day before my credit card will be charged. So I booked Enokiya Ryokan just one week before. The staffs are very friendly and replied my questions promptly. I am very impressive about their service before I checked...

Located about 5 minutes walk from Yufuin Station, next to a river. Hotel staff are very friendly. Even though they speak limited English, it was enough for us to understand each other. They have public and private onsen. The 3 private onsen which are all outdoor are beautiful, so make sure to book when you check-in. We managed to book two session, one at night, and th...

It was my first time to go to kyushu and Yufuin. At the first time, actually we didn't know what kind of hotel would be good for me and my friend to have a package travel there. But we all think we made a good decision to choose Yufuin kirinko hotel. The staff there was really friendly and the room was really wide than we could imagine. The best thing I have to say is ...

Excellent Hotel. The lobby is beautiful, free drinks at the lobby area, there is a shared kitchen in case you want to cook or microwave something. There are 4 private onsens, guests take turn to use them. Booking required at some timings and not required at some timings. Open air foot bath, hotel atmosphere, rooms, all nicely done. Most of the hotel staff speak go...

I had pleasant stay here. It was my first time in Yufuin and my first time of my parents in Japan. We've been in Japan for 6 days and Yufuin night at Tawaraginosato Yasoda was the best. I don't mind the public onsen but my family never experienced onsen so it's great the hotel has private onsen and that made this trip even more special! It takes about 15 minute from Yu...

There is actually pickup service but when I wrote in to ask about it, the ryokan did not reply me. So we dragged our luggage up the slope... There are English, Mandarin speaking stuff so communication isn't a problem for people who do not speak Japanese. Best facilities, fantastic food, good service and if you have special food preference, you can either write in early...

Due to the rain, we decided to bring the bags to the hotel first (~11:00). Before we left, we asked if we could eat our egg rolls outside the entrance. The lady said why didn't we come in and sit down at their restaurant. She provided us with the plates, forks and knife. Then, asked if we would like to have hot / iced tea. So nice.👍 We have booked the room with open...

We had a half-board stay with upgraded meal and private onset. The room was beyond our expectation. The design for Oyado Kaikatei Ryokan was a like a village and each guest could have a house of their own, including a sitting room, bedroom, bathroom, a tea-area, an indoor onsen and an outdoor onsen. The water in the onsen was slightly salty but we felt like its more li...

three doors seperated the room into three space so the size of the room was so big for 1 person. Private onsen bath in my room was the best point of here. Its size was enough for 2 people and it has a window so that I could see mountain view in bath. Room was so clean and useful amenity was equipped well. I want to visit here again someday.

The greeting board in front of hotel shows your name once check in . Wow !! then a welcome hot tea and mochi after finishing check in . I never get this kind of service in Japan before!! The room with a view of Yufuin valley is waiting for your waking up. In room free service with a tea set and of course the snack. Public on-sen is provided. Staff is services minde...

This is the best place that I have ever stayed in Japan. I booked a room of three with breakfast and dinner. The food is so delicious that you will never forget it. The room is spacious with a private onsen. The staff who serves us is so polite and helpful that I really miss her. If I go to Yufuin again , I will definitely choose this place because it will make my tri...

WONDERFUL STAY! The hotel is very close to the famous lake and within short walking distance if you want to see the best scene of the late in the morning. Room is spacious with hot spring bath tub. Dinner and breakfast are served in the room. They are very very delicious and beautifully presented. Hotel service is wonderful and impeccable. The pretty lady that serve...

Compared to the standard hotel, the Japanese Ryokan is rather expensive accommodation. However, it is acceptable since the hotel service is excellent and the hotel is located at the hot spring point. The existence of personal hot spring outdoor bath is one of the main reasons for me to choose this hotel. At Yufuin province, I may recommend this hotel.

Overall it's a nice hotel in Yufuin. It provides big room, good Japanese restaurant and public Onsen. It takes about 10 mins walking to the JR and bus station or the town center. Good location to me since it's away from the tourist area but all the highlights are still in walking distance. We book a Japanese-style room with the view of Yufuin MT. Very big room even wi...

This place is new, clean, modern, generous with amenities, incredibly comfortable, and comes with that bonus of using the free hot springs. What really makes this place stand out is the staff. They speak English well, are welcoming and friendly, and they will go above and beyond to satisfy a guest. Perfect location just a minute walk to Oita Station.

When you step into the hotel, it’s almost as nice as the pictures that are online. I love the modern/traditional fusion Japanese design of the hotel and the cleanliness of the hotel. Things also look very new, so we felt very comfortable using all the facilities at the hotel and everything in the room. I also love the view of Beppu from the hotel/hotel room(I got a 2...

The only reason I booked the place was because I thought that it would come with better food. The breakfast was quite disappointing. A buffet system would have been much better because I like to choose what I eat. I probably should have looked at the breakfast system before booking but the food aspect was my deciding factor. Everything else was alright.

Was really happy with the stay. The price is high if you include food, but I believe it is worth the price. The dinner was incredible "kaiseki" Japanese food. The breakfast was not as outstanding as the dinner, but still good. The room was a large comfortable "washitsu" tatami mat room. The spread out your Futons for you while you are at dinner. The "Onsen" hot spring ...
Cheap places to stay in Oita Prefecture

A nice recently renovated 4-storey suburban guesthouse with a warm and comfy wooden interior design. The cozy and comfortable family rooms are simple tatami with balcony, with amenities such as futons, air-con/ heater, TV, a small table and chairs, refrigerator, kettle, safe box, wash basin and a restroom. Do buy and bring your own towels. We stayed for a week to enjoy...

On our trip around Japan, my two best friends and I stayed in a variety of hostels and hotels and share houses, etc. and we learned what things not to take for granted... The big kitchen with WiFi, shower room and mini onsen, the convenient location, locking doors and private bathroom... all very much appreciated toward the tail end of a long trip. We definitely really...

The location is very close to the main beppu station but to get there is best to take a parallel street if you have big luggage and want to get there by foot which is totally possible. The staff is very professional and nice. While they clean from 10 ish to 3pm guest are advised to leave the guesthouse but you can use the onsen all night long! it's a small onsen but it...

The staffs have very limited English – frequently needed to resort to hand signs. The location is great being only a 5 minute walk from the Beppu train station. Had an interesting incident regarding my booking. I booked a 4-bed dormitory but was placed in an 8-bed dormitory. I pointed this out and after some hesitation was given a bed in a 4-bed dormitory only to be re...

The hotel is very nice. good location not far from beppu station less than 10 minute walk. the room is clean. the bath room is onsen type, so you can use for free onsen. The hotel provide towel, soap, shampoo and even t shirt and trouser for sleep. Beppu is an intereting city. There are many onsen and hot spring. The road to Yufuin is also very beautiful, you can go t...

super easy to find location, cheap price, and average facility (what you pay is what you get). the room is not so clean, and I can smell cigarette scent (no problem for me, but maybe for someone else: yes). the toilet in my room is so old it can't make the tissue paper disappeared. electricity socket is bathroom didn't work. women's communal bath is quite small (bu...

The place is nice with many room types. Not many facilities in the room but enough for all you need to sleep in. The dining room is big enough for a guest house. The kitchen supplies is more than enough and you can use it all to cook your meals and can eat freely like home. There are 3 restrooms for ladies but only 1 shower for the whole place. No worry about that beca...

The "rooms" are separated by plywood-esque materials and the tops are shuttered with curtains. Thus, it's very much like a hostel in terms of noise infiltration and atmosphere. However, you get much more privacy. The rooms are equipped with a wall mounted tv, bed, small desk with desktop (in Japanese) and an office chair. There's a really cool complimentary vending ...

The good: Clean & modern, with a certain style even. Very nice guest lounge & kitchen area. The "one- sided train car" arrangement is next best after the capsule one in terms of ensuring privacy and minimizing noise. The not so good: The lockers are too small to hang shirts and there is only a wire shelf at the end of the dorm. The two mattress pads are quite thin. Wh...

The hotel located with just 2 mins walking after you arrived Beppu Station. It is super value hotel if comparing to the nearby one. The staff don’t speak English but are very friendly and used translator to tell you the information you need. You can goes to their sister hotel and enjoy the Onsen available for free and buffet breakfast also are good with 700 yen. Hi...

Its location was somewhat far from the city center but it was very close to some famous places and convenience store. Manager was kind enough to recommend us a good hot springs and places to eat(which was a success). Wifi was a little slow but not the biggest problem.

We stayed here to try the Ryokan experience. The room was very big and was quite a comfortable stay on the floor. The check-in workers were very friendly and went above and beyond to make sure we were all situated because we dropped off our bags early before check-in. We signed up for the smaller onsen. It was nice. Not the best (I think the other was better but the go...

The owner, staff and guests were all super friendly!! They were mostly Japanese, but since I can speak Japanese I had a wonderful time chatting with them~ The staff speak English though so don't worry. The design and atmosphere were warm and cozy, the lobby also functions as a bakery during the day and a bar at night, and you even get one free drink ;) Every night I sa...

The location is not convenient, but there was a shuttle bus, so it was okay. And thank for the place, I saw beautiful night scene and cloud sea. The staff took us to see the firefly, which was amazing. You can see the good view in the dining room. Sweet staffs sang a song with guitar when we were leaving. I definitely would like to stay in here again. The best on...

We booked 6 different hotels in Kyushu for our whole trip. The staffs of this hotel were the most friendly and helpful. We booked a Japanese room for 5 persons and we asked for a non-smoking room but it is not guaranteed. Eventually, we got a room with very strong smoke smell, but they provide air purifier and spray to reduce the smell. Overall, we were very ha...

It was located at a convenient location - 10 min walk from JR Oita shopping centre, and the room was clean and comfortable. It was a tad too small though. I booked it for 3 people but found out that the double bed was a semi-double and not a queen. If you are not too comfortable squeezing with your travel buddies, it might be better to book a double room + single room ...

Great location, value for money, and there's a hot spring, facilities are rather old, cant expect more for the price paid, i stayed for 1 night and its fine, i would not want to stay for longer though. The lady at front desk speaks very limited English but we can understand each other for basic needs so good enough.

I chose this hostel because it is close to the Hell Onsen pilgrimage site. But finding the accommodation was not easy. The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. Seaweed soup, egg roll, salad, fish and Nato were prepared for breakfast. It was a very delicious and healthy breakfast for myself who does not like sushi. There was window in the room of the second floor,...

GOOD and large hotel, about 4 stars, with reasonable price ( I booked a non-smoking twin room). The room was very big. about 29 square meters. Staffs are very friendly and hotel room is very clean. Rooms are high floors, so guests can enjoy the night view of Oita City from hotel room. There is a Lawson right across the street. The hotel is linked to the main shopping st...

the hotel is old but kept well. can walk from the station. My room has a mountain view with ryokan style. The best thing is onsen. The dinner is normal, recommend eat outside hotel. My problem is, I have booked dinner with hotel for 2. Upon check in, I told the reception that no beef for dinner. She looked at clock that was 3:15 and her face was worried then she put m...

The onsen is big enough for two men and stylish. All the staff are nice and helpful . The only improvement would be the communication over email could be more details and informative . And dinner could be giving more choices or side dishes would be fantastic.

I travelled with 2 other ladies & all three of us enjoyed this hotel very much. Other then the fantastic location, new facilities & good value for money advantage, we also love their toilets provided (shampoo & shower gel) Will definitely recommend it to others traveling to Oita!

The service here was great including easy check in, check out and luggage storage. The onsen was great too. However, make sure you check how many people are staying when you book because when I booked this hotel I thought I booked for two people but they told me I only paid for one person so I ended up paying for one more person at the hotel. But other than that the ho...

The price may seem steep but you get what you pay for. From the time you get there until you leave, you are treated like you are the only guests in the entire hotel. Price includes dinner (kaiseki - 9 course traditional Japanese meal) and breakfast. Private hot springs baths both indoor and outdoor in our room along with public baths provide the utmost in relaxation. ...

Staying at Yufu Ryochiku was really awesome! Room was very neat and clean and foods were amazingly yummy. All staffs were very friendly - although their English was not great, they tried very hard to communicate with guests. The place is in the middle of the main street so very easy to locate and it was near to everything. If you want a perfect stay at Yufuin, this pla...

I have been to yufuin twice and this time I had stayed this ryokan first. To me, this ryokan is very calm and clean, onsen is well equipped. Furthemore, breakfast is really fresh and tasty. Location is little far from the downtown but you can get there by walk within 20min. Next time I will visit this ryokan again. IT IS BEST RYOKAN!! 유후인에서 정말 최고의 료칸입니다. 요리가 정말 맛잇고, 전...

Pros: The staff was amazingly helpful and polite. The hotel was beautifully designed and meticulously clean. Food was to die for. Couldn't be happier with my choice. Con: well, I guess you can't have everything. Being near the station makes it convenient, but it also means the outdoor bath was not exactly outdoors. It was really covered all on side to prevent t...

It was so nice choice for private hot spring. I enjoyed the private hot spring on a rainny night. It was awesome feeling free in the hot spring and so calm with the raining sound. I went to sleep very quckly. Also it had frash airs in the next morning and I like the small garden with lovely flowers. The food are good and it was yammy The best thing is the big w...

The hotel is far away from Yubuin center area, need a taxi to get their and a little bit hard to call taxi out. The hostess is very kind to give us a ride to Yubu mountains. The around environment is very very beautiful and the hot spring is wonderful. Although only one lady to do the room service but everything is neat and clean. They provide sufficient free snack...

The hotel offer pick up service from JR station, you may contact the hotel via their official website. Staff were friendly and could speak in English and Putonghua. No problem in communication. Welcome snacks and drink were provided when you check in. The room was spacious and come with 2 hot spring pools. The view from room was stunning. You may also choose to...

It was one of accommodations for our honeymoon. We didn’t plan to come here at first but we firmly believe this choice was awesome. Every staff was professionally kind and helpful for us. Hot spring and bedding were nice. For me, I would love to have hotter water for onsen. Some ladies were very noisy but could bear that because of Junko’s warm hospitality. Japanese br...

We stayed for a few days during a visit to Oita for the rugby world cup. Lovely place and the private onsen is really good.. but the staff member was a bit creepy.... stepping into our room when we were there, reparking our car (without our permission) and putting the keys in my pants(!!!) and opening the door to the onsen when we were there. Other than that, a perfe...

Very helpful staff at the front desk, restaurant and housekeeping. Lovely meals with fresh and tasty ingredients of local produce. Onsen was slightly scary - insolated on basement and sound of gentle bells when water got into the pool; water temperature at the wash area wasn't consistent, was totally cold for a night.

Although being a bit far (10-15 minutes walk) from the Oita JR Station, the hotel quality is good given such a price. The room is large and clean with abundant facilities. The staff are also helpful and can speak good English. I would live here again if I go to Oita some day later.
Luxury hotels in Oita Prefecture

Been to Japan more than 40 times, I think this onsen Hotel is one of the top three I had ever stayed. No shoes need to be worn once you stepped in this property, the smell of tatami calmed my nerves straight away. Our room was another highlight of our trip, everything was so well thought out. I particularly like the hidden pantry, the pleasant discovery when I used the...

Unveiling Oita's Best-Kept Secrets
While Oita is known for its famous hot springs and scenic beauty, there are countless hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Venture off the beaten path to uncover the lesser-known attractions that make this region truly special. For instance, the *Jigoku* (Hell) hot springs in Beppu offer a unique experience, with steaming ponds and colorful mineral deposits that create a surreal landscape. Each *jigoku* has its own distinct features, from the bubbling mud to the vibrant blue waters, providing a fascinating glimpse into the geothermal activity that defines the area.

Exploring these hidden gems not only enriches the travel experience but also allows visitors to connect with the local culture and landscape in a more intimate way.
When to Experience Oita's Magic
Timing your visit to Oita can significantly enhance your experience, as the region showcases different charms throughout the year. Spring, particularly from late March to early April, is a magical time when cherry blossoms bloom, painting the landscape in shades of pink. The sight of sakura trees in full bloom against the backdrop of Oita’s mountains is nothing short of breathtaking. During this season, various festivals celebrate the arrival of spring, with food stalls and traditional performances adding to the festive atmosphere.
Summer brings warmer temperatures, making it an ideal time for enjoying Oita's outdoor activities. The beaches, such as *Tanoura Beach*, become popular spots for swimming and sunbathing, while the lush greenery invites hiking enthusiasts to explore the nearby trails. The Oita River Fireworks Festival in July is a highlight of the summer season, attracting locals and tourists alike for a night of stunning pyrotechnics over the river.
Autumn, from September to November, showcases Oita’s vibrant fall foliage, with the mountains adorned in hues of red and gold. This is the perfect time for scenic drives and hikes, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the breathtaking views. The cooler temperatures also make it an ideal season for enjoying Oita's famous hot springs, providing a cozy retreat after a day of exploration. Winter, while quieter, offers a unique charm with fewer crowds and the opportunity to experience local winter festivals, making Oita a year-round destination.
Essential Travel Tips for Oita Adventurers
Traveling to Oita can be a delightful experience, especially with some handy tips to enhance your journey. Firstly, understanding local customs can go a long way in making a positive impression. For example, it’s customary to bow when greeting someone, and removing your shoes before entering homes or certain traditional establishments is a sign of respect. Learning a few basic Japanese phrases can also be beneficial, as it demonstrates appreciation for the local culture. Simple greetings like *konnichiwa* (hello) and *arigatou gozaimasu* (thank you) can go a long way in fostering friendly interactions.
When it comes to dining, Oita offers a variety of culinary delights. Be adventurous and try local specialties, such as *toriten* and *bento* boxes filled with fresh ingredients. Many restaurants offer set meals, which are a great way to sample multiple dishes in one sitting. Additionally, tipping is not customary in Japan, so simply expressing gratitude is sufficient.
