Tochigi Prefecture hotels & places to stay

If you are looking for a large, fancy, state of the art, international hotel, this place isn't for you! BUT, if you want a place that is friendly, comfortable, and has good food you're in the right place. My wife and I loved it!. The value is outstanding, and I would go back there tomorrow. It is an older hotel that lookit might be a large wooden mansion of a time gone by. It is about two miles from the train station, but the bus is right at the station and there is a stop right in front of the hotel. We had a room with two twin beds and it was much larger than we expected and spotlessly clean. Nobody spoke English, but they were so friendly and tried so hard to please us that this only added to the fun. We arrived after dark in a pouring rain and one of the managers was standing at the door as if he was afraid we weren't going to make it. It was really quite touching. Other than the hotels there is only one restaurant in Nikko that stays open past 6:00 PM, so you either must make reservations to eat there or you will end up like we did having a 7-11 picnic in our room. I reccommend taking their breakfast! It isn't that expensive and it is a full breakfast in a charming dining room. It turns out that the temple complex is closeby and, if you don't mind an uphill walk in the mountains you could make it. We opted to ride the bus to the station and transfer to the bus that services the complex because we were tired from the previous night. It was a good decision because there are hundreds of steps leading up to the five temple complexes. Very strenuous sightseeing, but well worth the effort! After a good soak in the hotel's scroupulously maintained bathhouse, and wearing the complimentary supplied robes and slippers, it was off to sleep in a very comfortable and roomy bed. Honestly, this place is a jewel of a find!

This hotel is a very traditional japanese onsen hotel located just besides the Kinugawa River. Our room has a great view overseeing the river and mountain. Rooms are equipped with Tatami beds and Japanese Rayon Robes are provided for adults and children. Communal onsen hot spring bath facilities are located at 4th level (separate facilities for men and women). This hotel provides great traditional Japanese buffet breakfast and dinner for half-board visitors. Most of the food are sourced from fresh local produce. The spring egg and the Japanese rice from Tochigi Prefecture are a must try. Overall, this is great place for those looking for a zen retreat. However, they charged the meals separatedly for my 2 daughters even though both of them are below 4 years. Hotel staffs speak very little English.

I booked this hotel thinking it would be a tourist trap due to its location, but I needed a central place to stay. How wrong I was! Staff is very kind and friendly. The biggest surprise was when we received a phonecall from the reception to remind us to have breakfast (we had forgotten about the breakfast times). This was incredibly kind and no hotel I have stayed at has ever bothered to take care of me this way. The breakfast at this hotel was the best we had in our Japanese hotels: a good variety of both Japanese and Western dishes. The location is great right accross the train station (we were Japan Railpass travellers), yet really quiet. The onsen was also nice and we enjoyed it as we walked all day and it snowed. The only thing I did not like was a slight odor in the bathroom as the installations are a bit older. I can only recommend this place!

I would give more stars if I could. This is the best hotel I’ve ever been. Locations were good, it’s just infront of Chuzenji Lake and you can reach famous Kegon Falls by walk. The staffs are very very polite, they served us like a king and queen. It’s funny sometimes because they were too good everytime, they have high minimum service operation to visitors. And don’t you ever try to tip them as they said they serve fully with heart. Bedroom are really nice and sparkling clean, it’s very spacious, we have no complain at all in the hotel. Lake view from the room were astonishing as our view that time was much snow. At night, we tried their japanese dinner course - it’s ¥3,000 exclude tax per person, but it’s really worth to try! They got delicious food which made me speechless and wanna cry, their pork belly and desert in particular. But remember, japanese dinner set could be different every season, we went there around spring (13-14 april, yes it’s spring but still got lot of snow at Chuzenji), talking about food, Nikko was famous in their Strawberry and Yuba (tofu skin) which appear in Jay Chou’s Initial D film. :) We like bathing in the onsen so much, the pond was small but more than enough to get the feel, the shower room and dry closet was the best, too. Soap, Conditioner, and Shampoo got the best smell I’ve ever had, try it yourself! I highly recommend this hotel! Minus point : no lift maybe because they are semi authentic hotel, but no big deal as they can bring ur luggage up and down. Furthermore about our journey, if you go up until Yuno Lake you will pass the hardest initial D track when the mainchar (Takuma) sent Tofu from Gunma! Although you have professional bus driver, Prepare your heart coz the bus went down could be really scary for somepeople! Thankyou Hatago, Will definitely coming back! :)

I'm a frequent hotel guest and stay in 5 star hotels often and I can say that this is one of the best, if not the best hotel I have stayed in. There is no gym, pool, bar or facilities that qualify it for 5 star status but the stay experience was so good that its 5 star in my book. Check-in was done in a small seating area and we were led to our room and introduced to the room features. My room had the in room open air onsen and being able to have a soak anytime was great. Dinner was a lavish affair in the private dining room. Seasonal produce and fresh fish, great meal. After dinner, the room attendant came in the lay our futons on the tatami and we retired for the night soon after. Very relaxing and highly recommended for couples.

I only stayed in this hotel for one night but it was really AWESOME!!!!!! The price is cheap compared to other ryogan but the quality is perfect! The location is great; only 5 minutes or less to go to the World Heritage Site. Japanese breakfast is really delicious. They will provide you rice, tofu, (I NEVER tasted delicious tofu like this in my life), salmon shioyaki, soup, salad, natto (fermented soybean), and egg. But what makes me love this place is the crew members here they are really terrific! My friend's backpack got torn out and they help fix it! Only one weak point is the onsen. It is quite small and the outdoor bath is need a little bit of clean up (while indoor bath is OK).

The location is excellent and easy to walk to from Chuzenji lake (45m walk), alternatively with local busses between Nikko and Yumoto Onsen stopping by just infront of the hotel every 30 minutes. The hotel staff is also really helpful and will come pick you up anywhere in the area if you call them. The hotel itself is a nice building with beautiful and cozy rooms which give a really relaxing atmosphere. The staff was extremely friendly and professional in a "relaxed" but efficient way, spoke really good english and were eager to show us around the hotel and explain about the room and onsen all in very proper english. Their service was really good, even by the high Japanese standards. Food and breakfast was served at fixed time but they adjusted very well to my specific dietary requirements and had everything under control the whole time. The Japanese dishes both for dinner and breakfast were awesome (though a small quantity) but a feast for the eyes and the mouth! Overall the property is a bit pricey, but it feels really good that everything was included in the price paid on Agoda and they didn't try to upsell us all the time: Room, free access 24/7 to the onsen, breakfast and dinner, free coffee and tea in the lounge, transportation to/from the hotel ... Overall a really good choice that we do not regret!

No problem with the hotel. The hotel is nice. But i am unsatisfied with Agoda. I chose pay later when booking. The amount is Y5386 or rp 694.317. But they charge to my card rp 727.754 Days later. And I am sure on the days they charge my card.. Rp become stronger than Yen. So please be careful when you book and chose Pay later option with Agoda. They can give you curency exchange up to them

We checked into the hotel quite late at night. Was kinda sad because we arrived nikko later than expected and i thought we were gonna miss the dinner.. but to our pleasant surprise the staff actually kept the food aside and set it up for us, even though it was about 2h past the stated dinner time! The traditional dinner (and breakfast too) was SO amazing - gotta try it to get the full ryokan experience!! Staff are genuinely welcoming and very very helpful. Hot spring was 10/10, as expected, we went there every. single. night. (and maybe the mornings too) It's definitely not the cheapest/ most affordable ryokan in nikko but honestly, this place is worth my every dollar spent. So damn glad we chose to stay here - highly recommended for those visiting nikko, especially if it's your first ryokan stay.

This hotel is superb, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It is located in Kinugawa-onsen area which is very close to the Kinugawa-onsen station (walking distant), and the hotel is situated by the river. It is super relaxing here, very tranquil. The rooms were spacious, clean, most enjoyable. Staff are very friendly. The onsen are definitely one of the best, the hotel also provide free parking space. The food is amazing.

I love it! The staff are so nice. They cannot speak English but they tried so hard to communicate with us. He take us to the lobby and the common area, and tell us what we can do in the hotel. The room is very big. I thought it would be the small one from the picture I saw form somewhere but I was surprised after entering the room LOL Worth our money! The location was actually far from Kinugawa Onsen Station but the view at the bridge was priceless! only around 10-15 mins walk (don't trust google map .. just walk to the alley on the left of the convenience store "Rainbow," then turn left and walk until you see 7-11. After that, turn right and walk along the bridge and you'll see the tall building and that's it! :D

This was the first hotel I stayed at during my trip to Japan. I stayed in the annex portion (down the street a bit). One bit of warning, the hotel locks up from 11pm - 7am. no-one gets in or out. I almost missed last check-in (arrived at 10:42pm) and am not sure what would have happened if I arrived after 11pm. The hotel is about half way between the train station and most of the sites of Nikko, and right near the bus station. There is a convenience store across the street. The rooms are small, and the bathroom was tiny, but that seems pretty common here. The bed was quite hard, but was comfortable enough. In my room, there was an alarm clock and power outlets built into the headboard. 3G/LTE reception was 0 in the hotel. Outside I could get 3 bars on my emobile modem. The hostest was very friendly, but didn't speak much english, but she was patient with my broken japanese and we figured it all out. She makes a wonderful breakfast, don't pass it up. If I ever manage to return to Nikko, this will be my first choice of hotel. Loved it.

My stay was great. Me and my wife wanted to have a real authentic Japanese Ryokan experience and we got it. The room was great, the view was awesome, The Onsen was clean and relaxing and the staff was exceptionally wonderful and attentive to our needs. We decided to get a foot message during our stay which helped add to our comfort and our experience. Me and my wife both would stay here again. I was astonished that I had such a great experience even though the price is so cheap. I highly recommend this place!

I booked this hotel for my father who was visiting Utsunomiya, and doesn't speak any Japanese. The staff were incredibly friendly, and helped keep his luggage when we went to Nikko for a few days, and when we got back, they had given him the same room, with the luggage waiting for him inside! No complaints about the room either - clean and even has one English channel - CNN... better than most Japanese hotels! Breakfast was fantastic, lots of options, both Japanese and Western. The price with breakfast from Agoda was really good.

I know Japan and onsen very well. Yumoto Itaya Onsen is perfectly located in the heart of Yumoto, a small, remote town in the Nikko area. It is mid to small sized, charming, historic, and comfortable. It is not brand new, impressive or 4-5 stars. It is a humble, family run lodging that has taken care of itself and cares about its customers. My room had new tatami mats, a sign in Japanese hospitality of good upkeep. everything was clean, the meals were delicious, the staff spoke some English, the baths were wonderful but a little small, and the location is unbeatable if you want to be in Yumoto and Oku-Nikko, the more remote part of Nikko. They demonstrated a very high level of hopsitality and care. Better to go with someone, but perfectly fine if you're on your own. Probably great for groups. A great place to stay. I would return.

Owner was very nice. Location was good. Got free parking although we need to park our car next few streets however the staff will drive you back to the hotel. Room is clean. However, when we booked this ryokan, it didn't mention it was a shared bathroom room. So we didn't have our own bathroom. Fortunately, since it has an onsen, so we don't mind to take showers at the onsen.

Dates travelled: Late October 2018 If you go off the beaten path in Japan, you will be rewarded with a unique and special experience. Hatcho no Yu is part of a small cluster of hot spring inns called Okiniku Onsen (Okiniku Spa). I used my JR pass to ride the Tobu Spacia Kinugawa express train to Kinugawa Onsen town, then hopped on the most BEAUTIFUL bus ride ever from Kinugawa Station to Meotobuchi terminal bus stop. If you notify the hotel staff ahead of time of your arrival at Meotobuchi, they will have a shuttle waiting for you to take you up the private road directly to the inn, or you can do what I did which is print out a map and walk for about 1 hour alongside a river, over bridges, and through the forest to the hotel. AMAZING. STUNNING. Food was fantastic, hospitality totally on-point, they had no trouble accommodating my request for no beef/pork during meals (best to request ahead of time), the views of nature from the hot springs were incredible. Coming back next year!

It is directly opposite Tobu Nikko Station. You cannot miss it. We got a 2-bedroom family unit and kitchen. In front of the hotel is the bus terminal of all bus within Tobu Nikko areas. The "All-Nikko" Pass allow you unlimited bus travel for 4 days to visit World Haritage in Tochigi area,beautiful Kegon Fall, Lake Chuzenji and Yomoto Onsen. One thing that you need to know is that there is very limit food available especially in winter time. You have to depend a lot on the huge supermarket, Lion, about 10min walk behind the hotel. Oh yes, it seems to be very cold in the hotel room. You have to blast the aircon (at 30degree) and max with the thermostat of your blanket. Drink a lot of water.

An absolute delight for the money. While there are hotels that are located closer to the station, Smile still sits right in the center of the city. The staff is extremely friendly, and the number of facilities included in the price is great! While I have had a "Don't disturb" sign on the door one morning, the housekeeping staff was still kind enough to leave me clean towels and extra tea and toothbrush in a bag outside the door. The room was a little bit narrow and the bathroom looked old, yet everything was clean and worked perfectly. Fully satisfied and would come again.
