Where to stay in West Coast Region
West Coast Region hotels & accommodations

Franz Josef Glacier is perhaps 1 of the most isolated town along the west coast region. Like what a lot of their servers were saying 'we are in the middle of nowhere'. So don't expect to see any big chains hotel names and facilities in the area. The room size was alright and room was clean. The bed was too soft and bouncy and unfortunately, the WIFI wasn't working th...

We booked our stay at Franz Josef having had a fantastic stay at the Aspen Court accommodation at Mt. Cook. The staff were very friendly and our room was spotless. Having travelled to the town to trek to the glaciers we were surprised to discover that this wouldn't be possible. The footpaths had been washed away months earlier during the spring floods. Roads were stil...

We were heading up Fox Glacier and wanted to get accommodation close to the Glacier store. This was the only property that was within our budget and looked like a decently clean hotel so we took a chance on this and never looked back. Room was exceptionally clean, spacious and the toilet had it's own rain bath shower head which was excellent. We stayed in the room that...

Even I read a lot reviews mentioning it's cleaniness before arrival. We were still amazed on the spot. The staff must work very hard to maintain this level....And also very quite, again out of expectation...Although we lived in the double room facing the bath room, there was almost no noise! Except for oNe girl next to our door came back to her room in the middle of ni...

This place was great! We had the bundled package including room & 5 course degustation dinner which was superb! The room was spacious, very well equipped, clean, and very comfortable. The staff were extremely attentive and courteous; we felt like this was a true 5-star experience. The bed wasn't as comfortable as hoped, but everything else was fantastic!

We booked a studio room for 3 people and it was clean and beautifully furnished. Had the basics we needed for an overnight stay. Conveniently located across from Franz Joseph Glaciers guide center and hot pools. 4 Square was only a short 5 mins drive away. Had beautiful scenery. Friendly staff and easy communication. Would recommend.

From the time I arrived at the Bella Vista I was warmly greeted and welcomed by the lovely lady at the reception desk who offered me fresh milk for hot drinks along with hot chocolate packets which weren't in the room. Pretty much every request was attended to swiftly but also any questions no matter how silly were answered honestly and throughly. She was always happy ...

We were arrived late at around 8 pm and the owner/staff still welcomed us with smile and our rooms were ready and warm. But the most impressed moment was when our car was stuck in the mud in the middle of nowhere, where we did not know who can help us, motel owner was there to help us with one gentlemen surround the area. They came quick and help to pull our car out of...

Stayed here at the end of January 2012 and found this accommodation to be very clean, modern and enjoyed our stay. Check-in for the cottages is nearby at another motel, but only a short distance away. Staff were very friendly and helpful and eager to please. All facilities within the Franz Josef township are within easy walking distance from 10 Cottages, such as restau...

I would highly rate this accommodation and it is excellent value for money- however, Fox Glacier as a destination appears rather neglected by the authorities compared with the Franz Joseph Glacier- seeing the Glacier here is problematic as only one path was open during my visit and the authorities were maintaining this using tarmac from a road leading up to the glacier...

The tree house deluxe was a very good room. Lovely view from the room. Very comfortable beds and cleanliness was very good. It would have a 5 stars if they had better bfast facilities. They just put a basket of supplies at night for next day bfast... This was the only negative point. The rooms were very spacious. Everythinge else was very good. A must stay in this pr...

Rooms were nice. We had the family room. Only complaint I had was that the family rooms only had a heater in the living room and not the bedrooms though the bedrooms did have heated mattresses. If you, like us, are not fond of the cold then you may need to keep the bedroom doors open during the night to let the heat in from the living room. Doesnt have a restaurant wh...

I’m sure it’s about the same quality as others in the area, but I enjoyed my stay. It’s very easy to find, and the InterCity bus stops right in front of it. Check in is open until 9pm and they’re really nice. The place is surprisingly big, so don’t get lost. There’s a huge kitchen and shared area with everything you could need to prepare and eat dinner. A TV room with ...

I stayed with my family at this place during Nov 2017. We were upgraded to a bigger 2 bedroom cottage that also had a spacious living, dining and kitchen area. It is 5-minutes drive from town center and virtually next to nothing which means that you are totally at peace while still short drive to amenities. We had a wonderful two nights there with the host providing ex...

We stayed at the Beachside Motel for only one night, sightseeing on the west coast of NZ. It was a perfectly comfortable and clean studio room, located near the centre of Hokitika and on the beach. The accommodation was functional, but perfectly fine for one night. Good value.

We enjoyed our stay here. Nice quiet little place, with lovely views outside on your front porch. Staff were helpful. The location is little bit from town, and taxis aren't easily available in Franz-Josef, so maybe best if you have your own car. But the hotel staff let us know of several restaurants in town that will come pick you up (and drop you back off after) if yo...

We stayed at Ashley hotel for a night and checked in pretty late. If you enter Greymouth from West port, there is a HongKong restaurant right in the begining of Greymouth town. They are open till late and food is very nice! The I-Site visitor center gives discounts on touristy activities. Do visit Hokitika as they have beautiful natural attractions and trails. Ashle...

The view of the greenery was a welcome sight. The room was clean and had all the amenities for a home cooked meal. Lots of channels for entertainment. Staff were lovely and helpful. The Pioneer Hotel is a combination hotel/bar and check-in is at the bar in the front of the hotel. The gentleman operating the hotel wasn't immediately present, and it wasn't immediately clear where to go, but one of the customers went to get him and everything else about the stay was smooth. Bathrooms and showers are shared, but there are two each which was enough for...

I cannot think of anything to complain about heartland hotel. It is located right in front of bus stop and beside grocery which is very convenient for travellers traveling by bus. Room is clean and beds are comfy. Just a tip, if you are traveling with a trolley luggage, it would be good to request for a room at the ground floor or you have to climb the stairs. Laundy ...

We stayed in numerous backpackers in South Island and I must say, Mountain Jade is just one of the best. Don't expect a 5 star hotel obviously. The rooms were clean, we stayed in a bunk bed, centralised heating in the whole place, breakfast consisted of cereals and bread. The manager was friendly and delightful to speak with. Walking distance to a lot of food places ...

Lovely staff and a cool building, nice kitchen and very comfy beds. Just a few steps away from the city centre (cool old buildnings wild west style) and two huge stores open 7 am–9 pm seven days a week for supplies if you need to stock up on food, hygiene articles, clothes and other things.

I a mistake in our reservation. When I asked at the front desk if our room has a bathroom which I thought it has, he said no. I wanted an upgrade (by money of course). He took care of us so very well in the middle of checking in 45 other people. We got unit 1 which has two stories, a fridge, electric kettle, plates, bowls, cups, tea, coffee, microwave oven, etc. plus a...

I booked at Te Hui House but when I arrived, they told me I would be staying in the Punakaiki Beach Hostel instead. This was one of the best hostels I've been to in NZ - lovely small dorms, cozy and clean kitchen-lounge, good atmosphere, beautiful location. Not to mention you could buy freshly baked bread from the reception. I can easily recommend it to anyone.
This is the best place we've stayed! The owners are incredible. Truly lovely people! Really attentive, always on hand to help, full of good advice on the area and just good people to chat with. The rooms are a good size with comfortable beds. Everywhere is really clean. We were given cycles to use for no extra cost. Supermarket is really Close. The adventure bookings...

Convenient location half way between Hokitika and the Gorge with a variety of different accomodation options attached to a small country pub. All rooms have a shared bathroom. Perfect B&B. Al and Rosie are very hospitable and friendly. Felt like home. I got a piece of homemade carrot pie when I arrived. Room is very clean and cosy. Flowers in de room. Breakfast is the best I have had in NZ. Homemade bread, yoghurt, muesli, fresh fruit etc. It was a pity I could only stay one night.

The friendly staff (a lady) guided me to the room, once entered to the room, i cant believe my eyes... The room is soooo big and cozy... i love the hotel so much... Greymouth is always raining, my plan was ruined by the weather, but is ok.... the next morning I saw a very beautiful rainbow... Omg... such as beautiful place... :)

This place was so beautiful and the location was very close to all the attractions in the area. Misty Peaks Boutique Hotel is simply fabulous! So good we ended up staying for 2 nights! Very friendly and welcoming hosts. Spacious, clean and modern room with character and thoughtful detail. We wish we could have stayed for longer - the cottage has direct access to the west coast wilderness path. Absolutely loved it. Outside kitchen space for breakfast was quirky and will be great in summer time.

We had a most comfortable and surprising 3 days, the owners were so friendly and welcoming. The rooms are excellent in size and decor and the additional recreation facilities were more than expected. Paroa Hotel was an ideal stop when we travelled the west coast. The room was like a small apartment and had every facility you could wish for and was very clean and fresh. The owner was charming and the staff very helpful. On top of this they serve excellent food which we were able to take to our room as we were tired and wanted a tv supper!

Lovely property and beautiful miners cottage rooms. The rooms have been very tastefully done and are massive with a nice balcony. Unfortunately, the only challenge with the hotel is the location as it is very small town and everything shuts down by 6-6:30 in town. Nearest town is greymouth 30 min away for grocery and basic items. Overall, still a memorable stay!

Dave was so assuring by telling us he would wait for us till 10pm when we called him that we were be checking in late due to delays on the journey. From the online availability, we booked a one bedroom unit for a family of five. Dave provided us with a 2 -room unit as he thought this will be more confortable for us! Was warmly touched by his thoughtfulness!! We slept ...

Was a welcome suprise to stay at such a spotlessly clean and new premises. Little thoughtful touches everywhere - we had a very comfortable night here. Superbly located and spacious, excellent TV options in each room and wifi, we couldn't have asked for anything more.

We stayed in the theee bedroom house and were blown away with the spaciousness, beautiful accessories, comfort and cleanliness. Such good value for money. Very highly recommended. Five star accommodation, will definitely stay again if traveling South.

We found these cottages just perfect & great value for money even on the bit larger side for judt two of us. Nettled not far from town & off the highway prime location. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The location is fantastic, with great views out over the valley from both inside & the huge deck.
