Yamaguchi Prefecture hotels & places to stay

We stayed in this hotel in this double room for three days. First, it is good because it is located 5 minutes walk from Simonoseki station. Second, hotel employees are very kind and can speak a little English and Korean. Third, hotel facilities are clean because it is not long since they were remodeled, and you can use washing machine, ice machine, microwave oven, etc.

I was here for a short trip of around 3-4 days in the Yamaguchi Prefecture. I was just looking for a place to stay but I did not expect the perfect service and so many wonderful amenities. The rooftop onsen was so good. The night view was amazing and during the night it was really private. Also, very amazed with the basement onsen. I always wanted to watch TV while having the time of my life in an onsen and they made it come true. The receptionist staff was super helpful and the room service was impeccable.

We love Onsens and this was a true delight from beginning to end. We arrived early on the train. The hotel is only a 10 minute walk from Yudaonsen Station. Very easy to get to. We were met as we arrived with smiling faces of ladies in Kimono. The front desk staff was very accommodating and allowed us to leave our baggage for a small fee before check in so we could enjoy discovery of the area and finding lunch without bags. The front desk does not speak much English but they were very helpful and it was not a problem. When we returned, we were shown to our room by another beautiful lady in a Kimono. We had a Western/Japanese style room with a bath in the room. The room was beautiful with two Western style beds and Japanese sitting room with tatami mats and beautiful wood and rice paper sojo screen doors. There was traditional Japanese style table with floor dhairs. Beautifully appointed. Our hostess made us comfortable at the table and made tea for us. We sipped tea while she explained about the hotel and the area in English. Her English was very good and we were able to understand all that she said. This was a very considerate gesture for the hotel and we greatly appreciated this. She also prepared the bath in our room which had water from the spring at the Onsen. It was worth extra to be able to enjoy a private experience in our room and enjoy the public baths too. Our package came with both dinner and breakfast. We were provided with Yakata and a jacket for both enjoying baths and all other functions in the hotel. This included being able to go to the restaurant there. The dinner was an unbelievable culinary experience. All dining areas are in a very Zen fashion which allow for public but private dining experiences. We had many courses of local specialties including blow-fish (fugu) which is a Japanese delicacy that must be specially prepared. Stayed for two weeks. The staff was amazing, helpful and friendly! They always made us feel welcomed and were incredibly polite. I felt right at home and recommend for anyone and everyone stay at Hotel Trend Iwakuni! Free coffee/water/green tea in the lobby, inexpensive snacks and beverages right down stairs, and only a five minute walk to the Iwakuni JR train station (about a 30 minute train ride from Miyajima and less than 60 from Hiroshima Station) made it very conveniently located as well. There were plenty of great restaurants, bars and convenience stores also within a five minute walking distance from the front door so the location of the hotel was absolutely perfect. If you take anything from this review, its that after an extensive stay in Iwakuni and going all over the place in search of adventure/sight seeing, there really is no better-located and priced hotel to stay at than Hotel Trend Iwakuni.

It's a little out of the way for most tourists as it took 2 hours on the Shinkasen from Shin-Osaka to Shin-Yamaguchi, then a 90 minute bus ride to Hagi bus centre. If it's old Japan that you want to experience then this is for you. This place is very traditional Japanese. We chose the traditional Japanese room with ocean views, it was magic. It is a little bit out of town, so be prepared to catch taxis for approx ¥700. The staff don't speak English but they have an app that translates. All signs and information are in Japanese only. The restaurant only takes reservations as it is a set menu with set price. There are other restaurants around town but most cater for Japanese tourists. Don't expect a continental breakfast as this too is a set menu, and traditional Japanese food is all that's on offer. There is a supermarket in town and a 7 eleven for fundamentals. They have a local Hagi bus which costs ¥100 per ride or ¥500 for a day pass. Red bus does a loop around town and blue bus goes to other tourist destinations the other way. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here and hope to return soon.

I have two complaints and they are minor. One, the TV remote was intermittent at best but as there were no English language channels available it was a small matter. However, I was very disappointed that the front desk would not provide me with a receipt for my stay. I am not a frequent traveler so I do not rate a corporate credit card and have to use my own and to file a travel claim I have to have receipts. If for some reason your email receipt is not sufficient needless to say I will probably not stay at your hotel in the future.

This hotel has a great bath with wonderful harbor and costal views. It is so relaxing and comfortable to soak in the hot spring. The staffs are considerate and attentive. Both their breakfast and dinner are delicious. Even it is slightly far away from Hagi downtown, they provide shuttle services to/from Higashi-Hagi Station, and there is a daily bus to/from Shinkansen Shin-Yamaguchi station door to door literally. Taxi rides from the hotel to most of the places in Hagi costs about US$15-20.

It’s a 15mins walk away from Yamaguchi station, quite a distance away and not very convenient. Not many shops nearby too and roads are almost pitch dark when night comes. Can be a little scary. Hotel is very old and run-down as well. The lifts were perpetually filled with cigarette stench and the walls of the room are so thin i could hear every word the guest staying beside me was saying. But i really have to commend the staff! They are all extremely helpful. I couldn’t understand Japanese very well and they tried their very best to explain in English and help me get what i wanted.

Hagi is an interesting historical city and this hotel is a very nice (luxurious) ryokan. Overnighting here means sleeping on the floor Japanese style. Always ask for 2-3 futons to give enough softness! :) Getting around Hagi by the local tourist bus is easy and inexpensive using a day pass with a full schedule from early morning until 6 PM. Finding reasonable restaurants is a problem. The hotel assumes you will eat there so they don't really know what or where to suggest. We walked extensively through the town to see the historical sites and learn a bit. Restaurants were not to be found anywhere except a couple of shabby places. We like Japanese foods and are not fussy but we elected to buy take-out sushi boxes from the local grocery store after eating in the one place the hotel recommended and which is supposed to be one of the best in Hagi. Mediocre fish in a seafood place and way over priced for the quality. Hagi is good for a brief visit but be inventive about food.

My older daughter and I, traveling to Iwakuni to visit my son, stayed at the Kappo Ryokan. Having never stayed in a Ryokan, I had no idea what to expect, and was very pleasantly surprised by the accommodations and the owners. This place is much like a bed and breakfast (and dinner), run by a husband and wife team. Though we had to rely on google translate (I speak no Japanese, and their English was only slightly better), we found our hosts to be very accommodating and eager to please. Though we weren't able to enjoy the included breakfast, we did have a fantastic dinner at the hotel. It must've been an 8-course dinner: by the end we were absolutely stuffed. The food presentation was outstanding and, while I'm no connoisseur of Japanese cuisine, it was very good. The location is directly across the street from the Kintaikyo (Kintai?) Bridge, so it couldn't be more convenient for touring Iwakuni. I would definitely stay here again, but would have google translate ready.

Management was very helpful when a problem occurred with the closure of the bridge connecting Suo-Oshima with the mainland; the manager assisted us with ferry transportation, including payment. We were very impressed with how our situation was addressed and will stay at the resort if and when we do return to Suo-Oshima. The main purpose of going to the island was to visit the Japanese Emigration Museum; unfortunately, due to the ferry schedule, we were not able to stay very long at the museum.

The customer service is really lacking here at the main reception and in the onsen in particular where the staff are out and out rude. Made us walk back to the hotel to pick up our onsen ticket, we were clearly staying at the ryokan isn't the key enough?! Shame as the service in the room and the food was phenomenal. A true adventure in local Japanese cuisine and the dassai sake is sold here which I'd highly recommend. The outside onsen is very nice and the water is so soothing, shame about attitude of the people that work there. Btw I've stayed at quite a few Ryokan's so am familiar with bathing etiquette. No WiFi and expensive, but the food and onsen are great.
