Wonderfully designed house, beautiful room, gentle and helpful host family. We were upgraded to the room with private bathroom. There is a small shared kitchen and sitting area. We liked the location a lot, it is quite and residential and only 10 minutes to the lake (with food options) and 10 more to the temple of the tooth. From bus station or train station it is 200 LKR per tuk tuk.
Clean, quiet and comfortable”
I really liked this guest house. The space for guests is on the top (4th) floor (middle floor is a large common sitting area and balcony), while the owners live on the 1st & 2nd floor. So it really felt private and unobtrusive for both guest and owners/caretakers. Although the bathroom is shared for the budget room, I believe you will be the only one using it. Clean, spacious and in a beautifully designed and constructed house. In a very green area, up a hill. I walked into town each day along the lake. You can also easily catch a bus for 10 rupees from the main road (about 7 minute walk). You will have to walk uphill for about 7 minutes to get to the house. The road was lit at night most of the way, and I felt safe coming up after dark. Very good stay, I would certainly stay again. Garden cafe (10 min walk down) is tasty and cheap.
Fabulous value guest house with outstanding room ”
We had a great stay here in the balcony room with our young kids - it is definitely worth paying the bit extra for the balcony. The room was just fabulous. We got an extra bed and there was still plenty of room. The views are great. The location is also good as long as you don't mind being a shot rickshaw ride to the centre of town. I loved walking through the neighbourhood - it felt like a local community but only 5 minutes walk to the lake. There are a lot of stairs though! Our hosts were very friendly and we had a good stay
Great guesthouse with very friendly owners”
This is a wonderful guesthouse tucked away from the busy town. You can walk to town in about 10 minutes or take a tuk tuk. This is great because at night you can't hear all of the street noise. The owners are so friendly and even let us leave our big bags there for about a week while we went and toured around the rest of the country. I would highly recommend this guesthouse.
not easy to find, cosy to sleep”
It was not easy to find the location first time even with SL driver and it appeared that there are no meals served. But the owner was very helpfull and friendly. The place is new, quiet and is absolutelly clean and very comfortable. Nice view from shared balkony and pingpong table downstairs! 10 minutes to Kandy centre by tuktuk. Recommended for rest after or before hard journies.
New rooms, centrally located, lovely people”
Centrally located, although from the tuktuk ride I thought it was going to be out of the way a bit(!), it is on the eastern tip of the lake and a quick 5 minute short cut route down to the lake and in fact closer to the temple than the other guesthouses on the southern edge. With a few rooms on the top floor of their tall storey home, they are fairly basic (ie. no TV) but brand new, clean, modern and comfortable...just like the pictures online. There is no room balcony or stunning room view although there is a communal balcony overlooking the hills, surrounds and big Buddha on a hilltop which is lovely and very peaceful. The couple are extremely lovely; I was welcomed with fresh juice and a chat, and even brought a cup of tea in the morning! They found out my ongoing bus details and arranged a fair-priced tuktuk to the station the next morning. I was only there for one night to see the sights of Kandy and it was perfect. Definitely recommend this hotel; it is not going to stay at the cheap price I paid for long given the quality of room and service!!
Great views ”
It’s really worth paying a bit extra for a balcony room, views are superb ! Really nice place
Good value rooms in guest house”
Clean. Good location at other side lake from town and near good cheap eatery. Slats opened directly onto a shared room so could be noisy and no privacy sound wise.
Nice view. Clean comfortable rooms. Bit out of town and staff not really around.”
We enjoyed the balcony and view from our room, and the room was clean and comfortable. The cons are that they don't serve food, it is about a 15 minute walk up a dark road out of town, and the staff, while very nice, weren't really around to answer questions and help with transport inquiries etc. You also have to ring the bell for them to open the door every time you come home.
great view from balcony, quiet part of the city, nice owner”
What the title says, plus you can get the laundry done for cheap. The family room is big, has a balcony with great view. It's 20 min walk to the temple of the tooth, which is in the center, along the lake. We enjoyed it, and enjoyed the stay at the hotel too. If you want breakfast, you'll have to get it elsewhere, they don't serve it. Not a problem for us, just a thing to consider.
Nice view, great budget place”
We had a room with a balcony and our own bathroom. The view from the balcony was really nice, absolutely worth the few rupees more... The room was nice and clean, the air conditioning worked fine, too. The WiFi ws good, too. A bit further off from the city but the walk was OK, and walking home after dark was completely all right, too (we were two yound women). The hosts suggested we go to eat at the Garden Café next to the lake (10-15 minute-walk) and it was a good choice to try local food (delicious local food, not expensive, about 3-400 LKR/person, many locals, we had no stomach problems at all afterwards)
Worth it for the view ”
I enjoyed my two nights here. It was a 25 min walk down to city but I grabbed a tuktuk to get home at night. The room was large, the air con is great and I loved the view. The family is lovely and welcoming when they are around. It's a hands off kind of place so you can take a short stroll for breakfast, I found short eats place really close which was great!
Very nice place”
Comfortable and good looking room and living spaces. Friendly hosts. The Internet was on and off, didn't work that well most of the time. We opted for shared bathroom, which worked great, we were the only ones using it - the strange thing about the bathroom is that it has a clear window waist height. Great view out of the big Buddha but also a decent view in for anyone keen on watching us shower. I used my towel to block the view while showering, worked fine. Great stay overall.
Great budget room”
Very clean rooms, with good air-con. 10-15min walk to temple of the tooth. Great homestay! Basic facilities. If your looking for a basic budget friendly place I would highly recommend. Laundry now available for 150LKR, water bottles also available. No food services offered. But food services available within a 5 min walk
Nice home stay in Kandy”
The place is at the end of the lake ,it is 5 minute walkable from there. The property is owned by a nice couple , very friendly . We booked via Agoda for one day but after reaching there I extended for one more day. The place is best for Solo females,Couples and Families , there is an open balcony and sitting area near by room. Whenever we are coming back from outside the family invited us to chat , it was really nice to know more about their country. Owners husband is an extra gentleman who even dropped us in railway station on the way to his office. One suggestion I would like put to owners is fixing a direction advertisement at the end of the lake side which might help travellers to easily locate. Thanks a lot.
Nice family home with some guest rooms upstairs”
The home is lovely, the husband/wife are nice as well. The accommodation is nice. Everything was clean and tidy. We did have one recommenation, though. Kandy is a tough town to get low cost laundry done and we wish that the owners would consider allowing guests to have clothes washed for a fair price as a bonus to their housekeeper. I'm sure she would enjoy the extra money, and it would be a huge selling point for travelers. There was an expensive laundry, Queens Laundry, recommended, but you can buy all new clothes for the prices they charge (e.g. 80 rupees for a simple T-shirt). We paid 400 rupees/kg in Mirissa and were happy to pay that.
Best stay in Sri Lanka”
I can't begin to explain how much we loved our stay at Renuka's beautiful house. For starters, I booked the place only 30 mins. before getting there. However, on arriving, we found the room very well prepared, with Renuka being the perfect host by allowing us freedom to arrive from dinner as late as we pleased. We came back at 10ish to speak with her 2 daughters and her, and found them to be really nice & down-to-earth people. The location of the house is brilliant, just a 5 mins. walk to Kandy lake and a host of brilliant (read Trip Advisor recommended) restaurants! If we get a chance to stay in Kandy again, I know what will be my first preference :)
The family is super nice and helpful. The location is good. It's just a short 5-10 min walk down the hill to get to restaurants and the lake. The room was very clean and comfortable and we had a huge balcony that overlooked the hillside. The rooms are on the top floor and separate from the family living area so it's very private. There is also a seating area on the floor below for guests. My only criticism is that there is no breakfast or tea offered which would really be nice. Even an in-room tea maker would be good. It's a bummer to have to wake up in the morning and then walk down the hill just to have a cup of tea or coffee. Otherwise, highly recommend this place.
Clean room, Good price, poor location ”
Nothing too fancy here. Had some trouble looking for the place as it is quite hidden in all the housing areas. Renuka inn itself is a residential building, so if don't make the same mistake like i did trying to look for a budget hostel / backpacker hostel looking building. Arrived at late afternoon but no one was there to answer the door, had to call the owner to open the door up. Location wise although it is near to Kandy lake, walking could take some time as it is at the far end of Kandy lake and Kandy lake is HUGE! The upside is tuktuk is everywhere so there shouldn't be a problem. Room and washroom are clean. I tried asking for washing machine to get my clothes clean to no avail. Bottom line, if you are looking for a comfy and clean place to stay near Kandy town, this is it. But don't expect anything more.
