In need of an update”
This was a grand place to stay sometime in the past but now it's in desperate need of an update. The rooms are clean but very dated with much evidence of running repairs. The bathrooms could best be described as acceptable. The beds were ok but are still that hard Thai style although nowhere near as bad as some. The breakfasts were disappointing to any westerner looking for a traditional bacon and eggs type brekky. Annoyingly the room wifi was very patchy. Simply moving a devise from the table to the bed would cause it to drop out. This may all sound negative, yet we enjoyed our stay and would go back. The staff were friendly and as efficient as their rather rundown facilities would allow. The Hotel has great location and has much potential especially the revolving restaurant on the top level which we went to. The beer was cold and excellent and the meal good as well.
Just slept for the night, Nice place!”
I checked in around 8pm and checked out 6am the next morning. For my purpose this place fit the bill. Coffee wasn't very good at breakfast but for the price I paid I was happy just to have coffee, let alone the food. The security seems pretty good so I wouldn't recommend it to any criminals or foreign spies. There is a mini mart just in front of the hotel which was handy for things like Mama noodles, MSG Packs and dark sunglasses. But there was a family there eating on the floor behind the counter and whatever they were cooking smelled terrible. I've been all over and this was like nothing I'd ever smelled. Kind of like gross, but you want to try some anyhow? Like stinky cheese or SomTam Boo Bah-la. I held my breath, bought some mouthwash and got the funk out of there. Then I stopped by some bar called Plucking Cowboy which is right next door. There was only one person inside, a woman bartender but sitting at the bar kissing a white cockatiel. Great Hotel Yall!
Nice for stop by and for short sightseeing tour”
I took this place because of the location and also it is a high building which could see the view of Mekong River and Lao Side. It is not expensive and also having breakfast and swimming pool available. Not much hotel like this in Mukdahan. So I would recommend here.
Very Pleasant, But could use quicker taxi service.”
Fine except for a few hiccups such as: had to take a cold bath or shower as water never did get more than slightly less than lukewarm you could take a bath like did using the hob to fill the bath takes about 5 or six as the tub is rather narrower than it looks, staff was supposed to have taxi waiting to take us to the train station (2000 baht, normal rate at station talked some guy down to 1400, but standard taxi 2,000 and it is a long ride) had to wait close to an hour after they said 5 minutes longest 5 minutes of my life. But other than that great hotel with a little convenience store in the loop of the hotel drive.
Nice rooms, helpful staff and reasonable location”
The original River City Hotel where I stayed in a standard room sits right in front (shared entry lobby and reception area) of a 15 storey brand new hotel with a revolving restaurant on top. Opening for the new hotel is early 2012 but I'm not sure if this means the older section is due for demolition or renovation. The older rooms are still nice with solid timber floors and lovely furniture. The bathrooms have good hot water and the Air Conditioning and refrigerator were all working well. Limited english channels on the cable TV though but enough to get some news and entertainment. There is a bicycle rental shop directly opposite the hotel that rents good mountain bikes at reasonable prices
Helpful staff and nice (older style) rooms”
the river city hotel is undergoing major changes with a brand new 15 (or more) storey building with revolving restaurant on top due to open early in 2012. currently (nov and december 2011) the old 4 storey section of the hotel is used for accommodation. the rooms are getting old but are still quite nice, solid timber floors, good quality fixtures and fittings and decent bathrooms. the wifi reception is good. there are 2 free bottles of water per day and the ammenities are replaced everyday. the new hotel will have a swimming pool, which was in the process of being completed during my stay.
Overpriced and not worth a stay”
The lobby is beautiful, but the rooms are tired and worn. The bathrooms were terrible. The hot water wasn't running in our room, or only as a trickle. The worst place we stayed in during our trip. Would not go again.
I found the serving area of food ie table cloths an anything glass needed some tlc .. many staff yet this is overlooked .. as for rooms the bathroom bath impart was poorly installed
Good hotel very central.”
The hotel room we had was clean and roomy. There was no information in the room in English. Our first two morning breakfasts where cooked to order and hot. Our third morning breakfast was of buffet type but everything on the menu was cold because there was no heaters under each dish. The swimming pool was nice and clean and the staff very friendly.
overall the stay was pleasant good location”
We stayed there for two nights and we do not like the breakfast in which they offer in the morning it is very poor and they do not offer very many entrees for you to eat from for the price it's not worth it they have one type of bread white bread only they don't have wheat or rye bread. I had stayed at the Plaza Hotel and they offer a wide variety of entrees for their breakfast it is very nice. But we do not like the rooms at the pool boy Hotel and the area is not very good for us because we cannot find things that we are looking for the area at River City offers a wide variety of shops to go and to eat from which is very good this is one of the reasons why we like River City besides the Room which are very clean.
Good but not as good as it could be.”
Whilst the staff were more than considerate and helpful it cannot hide the fact that some serious investment is needed to elevate this hotel to the standard today's travelers expect. My check-in was problematic from the start...they weren't or there wasn't the correct room available. The alternative room was unmade from the previous guest and finally a third, much larger was provided, albeit the reception then phoned through to advise the higher price, which I rejected since I wasn't about to go hotel hunting at 23:30 in the evening. The following morning I met with the Managing Director, a son of the owner and a congenial conversation took place about my experience thus far. In essence the hotel is a fairly recent acquisition and currently in process of overdue renovation. Assuming a full renovation is completed and a 'rolling maintenance' schedule is set, this hotel could easily be a great choice of location for any future traveler. The staff were also relatively new but their service was equal to seasoned employees, putting the customer first and making every effort to ensure a good experience. For the nightly room rate, facilities and location, this is an inexpensive hotel suitable for every kind of traveler.
Dirty pool..couldn't swim..moved out”
It always amazes me how photos of hotels can look so much better than in real life! The River City Hotel's photographer was no exception. When considering your options for a hotel in Mukdahan here are so pertinant Questions for perspective guests... do you like your normally hot breakfast food served cold ? For example, have you eaten cold fried eggs before whether at 6am or 10am? or have you had inattentive hotel staff so busy on their cell phones that they need reminding to refill the food and coffee pots at breakfast? Or have you ever been woken to the gentle sound of dogs barking at 2am, so incessant that you can hear them up on the 10th floor for theme the 2 hours? How about a Wifi system that suddenly stops every hour at random and you have to keep putting in username and passwords into it to resume transmission. And the beds that really are rock hard as a previous reviewer stated, Well then.... this is the hotel for you! But do not be put off by these minor disturbances. Sure this hotel is dated and has old furniture, but the rooms are clean, comfortable and function well. They have a nice ambience. I could open the sliding doors onto the deck and get lovely fresh cool air flowing into a room during the day that would otherwise have been stale old recirculating air. Apart from the toilet seat lid that won't stand up on its own and keeps falling on to your back when you sit on the toilet, there were no horrible smells or insects or bugs. The lovely smiling reception staff were welcoming and friendly! It never ceases to amaze me how in many hotels the staff no nothing about their town, nothing about the tourist attractions or where to go or what to visit or even how to get there. But that is not their fault. It's more to do with the poor hotel management and training. At least these days we are lucky to have google and the internet for that information. How did we all do it in the past before the web? People actually had to talk to each other.! The greates
Second time around.”
Our second visit to this hotel was OK. The rooms are a bit run down, very hard beds. Showing its age. Breakfast was good this time as the hotel was very busy and they had a buffet breakfast, if it is quiet you will get served a set Western or Thai breakfast. The view over the river is good and the pool is OK. Overall OK but wont stay here again because of the uncomfortable beds.
One night stay”
I am an Expat living close to Mukdahan, and we use these hotels with swimming pools for a break from the heat. This hotel is showing its age especially in its rooms. The hotel has a problem with small sugar ants, don't drop food on the floor. The breakfast is a set menu Western and Thai. The food was OK. We had dinner in the revolving restaurant and found the food to be OK. Live music, some in English was good and view very good. The beer was warm and had to have ice added to chill. There is no coffee shop or bar as advertised. I personally found the staff (non English speaking)to be non caring, unlike other hotels I have stayed at in Mukdahan. The new building rooms are at least 10 - 15 years old. Unfortunately, this hotel is like most hotels in Thailand which lack regular maintenance. Most Thais don't understand the value of regular maintenance and don't have skilled people in this area. Overall, It was OK for a dip in the pool for one night. I would not stop here for a long period.
Nice hotel convenient for the sights”
Good hotel with pretty good spacious room, sparsely furnished. Free water each day. No in-room safe. Bathroom a bit basic. Nice views of the River from some rooms - worth paying a little extra for that. Good revolving restaurant on 16th floor, with nice views, but limited international cuisine and very few desserts. Breakfast basic but acceptable for the price.
Three rooms changed in four hours! ”
Nice check in. Room changed after 5 minutes after the toilet overflowed. Second room changed after ants were crawling over me on the bed during an afternoon snooze. Third room had the toilet tank top itself up every 2 minutes which was in rhythm with the fridge that vibrated until we unplugged it. The staff smiled on every room changed. Should have checked out after one night and blown the second day charge but stupidly stayed the 2nd night. Should have looked the 6-8 score compared to the other cheaper hotels on offer that were high 7's or 8. Would never stay there again even for free.
This hotel is located on good location, that you can see good view of Thailand, Mekong River and Loas. It's located near Indochina Market, besides in front of the hotel, it has convenience store. If you want to eat dinner, I recommend a good taste and cheap restaurant on the 16th floor, where you can see a perfect view of Mukdahan, Mekong river and Loas, moreover this floor can move slowly around itself. However, I didn't impress about little menu of breakfast :(
I stayed in a 'standard' room. These are in the older 3 story block at the front. The rooms are fine: not too old; clean comfortable and spacious. However, there is no view. Guests who might want one would be better paying for a 'superior' room in the new shiny tower. Reception staff speak good English and are efficient. Free breakfast, which is just about ok. Logging onto internet was a little tricky, as individual guests are allocated individual usernames and passwords, which will change on a daily basis if you stay for more than one night. If your tech skills are not up to dealing with this, the staff will help you log-on. This is a nice Business class hotel for the price of a guesthouse, so very good value.
Not impressed.Bad bed, awful breakfast & restauran”
Didnt enjoy the stay. Many complaints but the main one was the food. Breakfast was a joke... disgusting. Also, revolving restaurant was supposed to be romantic with lovely views... instead we were treated to 2 hours of the piano guy tuning his piano by playing the same note for 2 full hours. Complained and was asked to fill out a form! He continued. then when he finally stopped tuning I was expecting some decent music.... god no..... they were even worse than I could have imagined. The food was awful too... .and cocktails arrived after 30 minutes! Never again!
Excellent...puts many Bangkok hotels to shame”
There was nothing at all negative about this hotel....only positives. It puts many Bangkok hotels to shame... its clean, comfortable, well maintained, well renovated, has good service, good meals and friendly courteous staff. What more can anyone staying in a hotel ask for...many other hotels operators need to take a look at this and see how it is done properly. Very very impressed, thank you to the staff and management for caring.
