Perfect Location, Comfy Beds”
Situated next to the Museum of Natural history and Central Park on the upper west side, this hotel has the perfect uptown location without the East side price. The breakfast/brunch is a miss and a waste of a nice looking room. Better to head to one of the UWS’s many brunch places or even Starbucks..
Stayed here many times. Always satisfied.”
Easy hotel validated parking at Museum of Natural History across the street. Subway station 1/2 block away. Many restaurants nearby. Central Park a block away. Courteous, helpful staff. Safe neighborhood for walking and shopping (not to mention many recognizable locales from the movie “You’ve got mail.”)
Great location, a place with an atmosphere ”
A perfect location between Central Park and the Hadson with a lot of things to do around. The room was spacious and clean and the bed was comfortable. Free WiFi all around. The staff was polite and helpful, we arrived at 7am and we got a room because they made an effort!!! We will be back
Grandparents with two grandchildren to visit relatives and enjoy the holiday activities.”
Our rooms were spacious for two adults and two children. Our first room was one King and a sofa bed, then we moved to a double queen with a sofa bed. Both were small suites. Beds and furniture were comfortable, windows could open for fresh air. Good lighting. Complimentary umbrella came in very handy. The breakfast buffet for $20 was ok, but the price should be reduced by half for children. Our grandkids ate practically nothing so it was quite an expensive waste of money for us. We had to go to the 11th floor for ice. Not convenient. For the price of these rooms a small fridge would be expected. Also, we only had access to a few cable stations and the price to rent a movie was $19.99! TV service should be updated. Our toilet became clogged and someone from maintenance came very quickly to fix it! Thank you for that!
Good location, excellent staff”
The location was in a good place in the city, upper west side. The surrounding area is not noisy/busy compared to Times Square. It's a good 15 min walk across Central Park to go to the Met or Upper East Side. They have an excellent staff, they make sure that your stay is comfortable. We actually left something inside the vault only to realize 2 days after we left. When we called the item was still there and we were able to retrieve it, this is a big plus for us! Really enjoyed our stay.
Great Location, well worth the money”
For all its worth in New York, the price of the hotel was affordable. Though the staff were not familiar with agoda, and there were some problems trying to check-in, once all standards were done and over with, the trip was a smooth one. With attractions within walking distance, this hotel was well worth the visit.
Beautiful hotel. Lobby feels like your stepping into a really fancy & classy hotel with all the dark shiny wood walls, furniture and elevators. The junior suite is gorgeous and comfortable. The neighborhood is stunning as well. My daughters and I absolutely loved staying here. We will definitely be back.
very nice hotel in a great location”
This hotel is quite reasonable considering the nightly rates of other hotels in Manhattan. It has a great partnership with the Museum of Natural History, which is across the street. Guests can park in the Museum Parking Lot for $30 a night, which is not bad on the Upper West Side. You can't take the car in and out as the garage is not open 24 hours, but you don't really need a car in that part of town. My only complaint is the $5.95 charge for internet access. This a ridiculous pinprick charge in this day and age, and is easily avoidable if you have a hot spot. They should just get rid of it. Otherwise it was a great hotel.
Good old hotel great location ”
Good old hotel with a great location. Super low key and excellent staff. The hotel was very quiet. The downside is that the bed and the pillows were not comfortable—felt like they were purchased at a discount store. But the water pressure in the shower was fantastic.
Wifi in room would cost them little and be a nice touch. Right next to the park and the running track - great Value for money high; there are often deals to be had. One time bath did not drain; sorted within 3hours
Location and comfort”
Loved jr suites, roomier than anticipated. Interior rooms dark but cozy. Comfortable beds, quality linens. Location was super, with wonderful restaurants within one-three blocks. Museum of Natural History/Hayden Planetarium across the street. Central Park, Sunday Farmers' Mkt lovely and right there. Only downsides were daily wifi charges, pricey bottled water, things like that. At $350/night, why charge $6/day for wifi? Overall, however, our party of 8 (two suites, one std room) was very pleased.
Perfect if you want to be close to Central Park”
The suite is of good size, but it has a tiny bathroom. It's close to Central Park and subway. There are quaint shops along Columbus Ave.
Great location, spacious room and quiet.”
The beds, pillows and linens were great for a good night’s sleep. Only negative was that room was too warm. But one could open window and there was air conditioner. The neighborhood is lovely and classy, great and interesting for walking. Serene.
Fantastic getaway ! ”
Stayed here for our wedding anniversary. Hotel was clean , staff was very nice. Room was a little small , but probably average by New York standards. Located on 81st street near Central Park , it was far enough uptown as to be quiet, but just a one block walk to the subway and access to the rest of the city. Overall a very good experience, and would highly recommend !
Absolute perfection for Xmas break”
This hotel topped all our expectations and more. It was like being in a movie. So warm and cosy and atmospheric. The surrounding area was so friendly and felt very safe. The view from our room of the natural history museum and city scape was outstanding.
Next to Central Park”
Booked/paid for a king-bed suite but was told that was promised by Agoda and had nothing to do with the hotel, which would not honor the confirmation. Ended up with a twin single-bed room. The rooms appeared tired and worn. It's location is certainly the redeeming quality.
Our fav location”
It was all fine - our view of Manhattan was fab and it was opposite the Natural History Museum and near Central Park, and on the Upper West Side, which is our preferred place to stay. The staff were friendly and helpful. The only criticism I have is that guests have to pay by the half-hour for wi-fi. For a hotel in this price bracket, I would have expected it to be included in the overall price.
A Good Experience”
Good memories about this hotel with my girlfriend. A fair size room , by New York standards. Decently equipped, with good bed and nice bathroom, in a traditional style. Overlooking the city and hard to find fault, while it wasn't 4 star either. Staff were pleasant and helpful. Ok restaurant, more a short block or so away. Recommended.
Great location, good room, lacking in amenities”
Overall, the stay was great. The hotel had a lot of character and was comfortable. Great location. However, the room didn't have a refrigerator, requiring us to rent one for $30 a night. The room also didn't have free Wi-Fi; and the room didn't even have a hot water boiler for tea, coffee or infant formula, forcing us to go to the hotel bar for it every evening.
Lovely hotel and warm and not expensive”
The Hotel Excelsior was well located on the upper west side, by Central Park. The Hotel was charming with an active lobby with bar and an elegant restaurant. The room was lovely, due to making me wait, they upgraded me free to a suite. I would revisit again.
