Banilah met my needs, I found it very affordable and it had some definite pluses, ie: it has a communal fridge (you can fend for yourself with takeaway food), microwave, coffee/tea set up per day, air con and fan in room, free bottled water, private shower/bathroom, and some pretty darned cool cats hanging out in the lobby. It was about a 15 minute walk to the old city for night markets, but for meals there are a number of them within a half a block from Banilah. It is a busy area after 6pm, enough to select from, but if you are looking for a quiet stay, this is right downtown.

Great hotel with cheap price ”

I’ve been here twice. Staffs are very helpful, friendly and nice. The room is reasonable for the price. I will come here again. We really love this hotel bc of the staffs and the location of the hotel is good for tourists ( Nimman and malls are not far and going to the middle of the city takes like 10 mins by taking Grab car)

Fantastic guesthouse option outside Old City”

Staff were so incredibly helpful and kind. They gave us the most detailed map we have ever seen, with tons of recs on food spots for each meal (seriously, color coded by time of day), places for laundry and similar services, shopping, key sightseeing highlights all throughout the city and beyond. We were blown away by the amount of time they devoted to guests for sharing this information. Staff cleaned the room everyday which was really nice. Room was clean, comfortable, and a good size. Location is fantastic - you are in a much more local area than anywhere in the Old City so you have much better access to cheap local food, coffee shops, etc. It's maybe a 15-20 minute walk to the north gate so not too bad if you are there for the sightseeing. We had already stayed inside the Old City previously so we really enjoyed the local pace of life at Banilah. HIGHLY recommend.

Best service I've experienced in Chiang Mai”

I stayed in a private room with AC for two nights. The room was nice and clean - the daily room service and unlimited free water are big pluses for me. As a solo traveller, I found the place homey and safe as there was almost always some staff chilling in the common area, and the housekeeper room is close to the entrance. The guesthouse is located in a lively local neighbourhood with lots of delicious cheap food, which makes it a good base for exploring the non-touristy side of Chiang Mai. The 20-minute walk to the centre is pleasant too as you get to see places frequented by locals on the way. However, when it rains, the paths are not that walkable so I'd suggest taking an Uber, which costs at least 40 baht per trip. What I like most about the place is the service. Upon my arrival Nancy provided a detailed introduction to Chiang Mai and some great recommendations on food. She even gave me a lift to a neighbourhood restaurant and helped me arrange transportation at reasonable fares. I felt that her excellent service came from her genuine kindness and it is easily the best I experienced in Chiang Mai. Overall I'd highly recommend this place to anyone who's looking to stay in a comfortable place and explore a local neighbourhood.

The sisters that work there are lovely, really helpful booking taxis and they gave us maps when we arrived and sat us down and explained where everything was. The cat cafe is a bonus, they were all really sweet. And the rooms are ideal, just what you need.

- Location is 30mins walking or 7mins by car to Tha Phae Gate which is the city center so to say - Staff are super friendly and helpful they gave me all the recommendations for food around the guesthouse, the markets, excursions...etc. right when I arrived. They also took my laundry when I needed to do it and had it back in my room. - Room is clean however bedbugs and mosquitoes are inevitable. - Also the place provides you with a bike whenever you need it at no extra charge. And 2 bottles of water everyday.

Up and Nancy are fantastic at taking care of you and provide you with maps and info on arrival. The rooms are nicely presented and quaint, tho dated. They are clean and services are provided everyday including fresh water. There is also a fridge and water machine, providing both hot and cold water, on the 1st floor. Showers are hot and toiletries also provided. The bicycles are also free. Why pay a hostel when you can have your own room and all this? Highly recommended!!

We stayed at Banilah for 6 nights. The rooms are clean and comfortable, and the bathrooms are basic, but also very clean and the showers had great pressure and hot water. We walked to the main square, night markets and Nimman area several times during the day and night, and it was a safe a nice walk - but taxis and Ubers are also cheap and easy. It was also nice to be out of the touristy areas, and there are many great options for food, drinks and coffee near the hotel. I loved that they provided water in reusable glass bottles and had a station to refill your bottles with both cold and hot water.

Just finished a great stay up in Chiangmai at the Banilah Guesthouse. The reason our stay was so great was the fantastic job by all the staff. So helpful in getting information on places to go, places to eat, and help booking our tours and activities. Made everything so easy for us to just come in and enjoy our stay. Even gave us a ride to the airport for our early morning flight. Would highly recommend Banilah Guesthouse for anyone travelling through Chiangmai. Thanks so much!

Definitely again”

We've been to banilah only for two nights due to leaving for Bangkok but we'd stay again in a heartbeat. The room is really nice and clean. Bathroom is reached over the small balcony and water is provided. Even hot water, a microwave and a fridge. The women working there were super helpful and gave us city maps and took care of our luggage after we checked out for the whole day. The only downside is the noise. It's not Khao San kind of noise, but the water from the small pont and people talking and walking. It feels like the window is open to the open space in the middle. The glass is not holding any noise. But it wasn't that bad and the cool house and the perfect location definitely made up for that. Thanks again to the team

best place we have stayed in on our trip so far! staff is extremely helpful and gave us a very helpful and thorough map when we first arrived. walking distance to may mall and day market. pedal bikes available to borrow and she helped arrange a scooter rental for us for a day. rooms are spotless. will def stay here again if we return to chiang mai!

Would stay at Banliah again in a heartbeat. The staff are so kind, helpful and genuinely hospitable. We loved the location, close to the old city and Nimman for all the usual tourist adventures but if you want a more authentic taste of Chiang Mai this is the spot, tons of good street food and local eateries to explore! The room itself was clean, comfortable and well-decorated. Would absolutely recommend!

Little bit outside but great!”

Banilah is located about a km outside of the Old City of Chiang Mai. But you can walk there easily. When we first arrived we immediately got 3 maps and a explanation where to find what and how to reach it, she colored it in different colors while explaining! She even teached us some Thai words (like not spicy ) or where to get some good and cheap food Then you can borrow a bike and motorcycles! They clean the room everyday and make the bed. Our double room is small but more than enough. The shower and toilet is part of the room but you have to conquer a really small balcony to get there. We had a tv (with english and even German canals) and got water every day . We wanted to stay here for 2 nights but decided to stay here for 3 night in total. The cat cafe is really sweet and it seems like they really care about them (for there is of course food and water for them . On the tables is a sign how the cats should be treated from visitors). The cafe belongs to banilah so when you arrive you get invited to come in. All in one I highly recommend that place!

STAFF - friendly & very helpful. They gave us maps and even took time to discuss about the places to visit inside the old city. I seldom write reviews, but I promised myself to make one for Banilah as a way of expressing thanks to the 3 nice ladies and their lovely cats for accommodating us. Definitely going back to this place on our next visit to Chiang Mai ROOM - it is a bit small, just good enough for two people. toilet is at the back of the room. all the basics are provided and a comfortable place to get rest after a long day. always remember to keep the doors closed or else mosquitoes will get in. LOCATION - a bit far from the old city. but its easy to get a ride from the hostel. you can also take a walk as there are lots of shops around the area PRICE - definitely worth every single cent (fast internet connection!)

Amazing staff and great value”

We booked one night and ended up staying five! She was so helpful and sat us down for at least 15 minutes explaining where everything was in Chiang Mai. Location is outside the old city, but it very easy access to get there there once you learn your way around. Nice and trustworthy scooter rental next door. Very clean room and well taken care of. Great local food around the corner. Would definitely recommend. Also amazing coffee and shop and doughnut shop a 5 minute walk away!

A very nice place”

I rarely write a review about the hotels because I think it depends on each person's opinion about what a good place is, but in my opinion this place is a very good place. The owner is very nice, she welcome me with kindness. She also give me several map and give me a detailed guide about which place to go, which restaurant is good, which activities are available in the area, etc, ... In my opinion it's nothing better than being guided with detailed information from a local. The room is kinda old, but it's good enough for me as the price is cheap. I will definitely choose this place again when i visit Chiang Mai next time.

Noisy, small, ants everywhere! ”

The walls are very thin, and you can hear the streets and neighbours. There was a dead cockroach in my room next to my bed, with ants everywhere... Even in my bed at night! The bathroom had spider webs up on the roof. The room was dark and small, and didn't feel homely or comfortable. The cleaners were noisy every morning, and would leave rubbish outside my room allowing for more ants crawling in trails around my window. I have stayed in many places in Thailand, and I am usually not fussy... But this is not a three star room. But on the upside, the staff were really lovely and friendly, always happy to help. Lovely homely communal area, beautiful settings outside. Great location. Refilled water every night. The staff were what made this stay pleasant.
