“Private hot springs and romantic relaxation”

Yufuin Ryokan Fukinoya Accommodation Review While planning a trip to Yufuin, Japan, I discovered Fukinoya while searching for a ryokan with private onsen. I had high expectations, and I was more than satisfied with the actual visit. 1. Reason for Choosing the Ryokan The main reason for choosing Fukinoya was the private onsen. Every room has a private open-air bath, allowing guests to enjoy the onsen quietly, and my experience exceeded my expectations. Enjoying the onsen while appreciating nature in a tranquil atmosphere was truly special. 2. Room and Facilities We stayed in a family suite for two, and the room was very spacious and comfortable. 1st floor: There was a tatami room where we could lay out futons and sleep. 2nd floor: It had two single beds and another tatami room, making it comfortable for up to six people. Of course, it might even be possible for over ten people to share comfortably if they get cozy! That's how spacious and pleasant it is. Additionally, a tea ceremony set was provided in the room for brewing and enjoying green tea, which was incredibly tasty, and I drank a lot of it. 3. Onsen In addition to the private onsen, there were various onsen facilities available, offering plenty of options. Foot bath Three family baths Public baths like red bath and blue bath In the private onsen, I could enjoy the onsen while feeling nature, and the water temperature was just right, perfect for relieving fatigue. It’s designed to allow guests to adjust the temperature themselves if it’s too hot or too cold. Particularly, the day I visited was cold with snow, and the combination of the chilly air and warm onsen made for an even more romantic experience. However, caution should be exercised as the floor of the private open-air onsen is rocky, which poses a risk of slipping or scratching. 4. Meals Due to weather conditions, many flights were delayed, resulting in a late check-in, but thanks to the prompt feedback from the ryokan, I was able to enjoy dinner kaiseki without any issues. (They respond quickly via email inquiries). The staff were very friendly and attentive, and each meal was made with care and attention to detail. Notably, the most memorable dish was the lemon fish cooked rice, which stood out for its fresh ingredients and clean taste. For alcoholic beverages and drinks, there is a separate menu, and you can settle the bill all at once during checkout. 5. Service and Amenities Fukinoya was very satisfying in terms of service. Staff friendliness: They demonstrated meticulous care from check-in to check-out. Transportation convenience: They offer a taxi-calling service upon request during checkout, making it easy to travel. Free coffee provision: Guests can enjoy free coffee in the lobby, and there are also vending machines available for paid use. Amenities: Note that there is no convenience store near the ryokan, so it takes about a 15-minute walk to access one. Onsen usage guidance: The staff provided detailed explanations, and there was additional information available in the room, making it convenient to use. 6. Overall Satisfaction This was my first ryokan experience, and it was more satisfying than I had expected. It’s a place I would recommend for families and couples alike, with private onsen and excellent kaiseki cuisine being significant advantages. However, keep in mind that it takes about 15 to 20 minutes to walk from the bus stop, but using a taxi alleviates any inconvenience. If I have the chance to visit Yufuin again, I would definitely want to stay here again!

    “I like ryokan.”

Four adult women stayed for one night. After arriving by express bus, we sent our luggage via a service that moved our bags, then went to see Yufuin/Lake and did some shopping at a mart before taking a taxi. There were reviews mentioning Uber, but we couldn't get one at all and ended up hailing a passing taxi, which cost about 600 yen. The checkout taxi was called from the accommodation, and there was an additional fee, so the 600 yen fare increased by 300 yen. Walking would have been difficult, I think. We couldn't apply for a kaiseki meal, so we had dinner at the unique nearby meat restaurant suggested by the staff (the service was unfriendly but the food was delicious). The tatami room was nice, and the room, toilet, shower, and sink were all separated, making it good for multiple people to use. We used both the Blue and Red ryokan for our reservation, and the one with the open-air bath was better; among all the hot springs, I liked the spacious open-air bath the most (luckily, there weren't many guests at that time, so all the baths were continually empty). We took a lot of certification photos wearing the provided yukata, and we could also rent a pretty yukata for 200 yen. The breakfast was served neatly and was delicious, and there was a coffee machine we used. There were some reviews mentioning that the staff used translation devices; while we were having breakfast, the housekeeper asked if they could arrange the bedding using a translation device. The housekeeper was a foreigner, so they probably used it. The Japanese staff were very friendly. Personally, while the accommodation itself was good, I was already quite satisfied with the hinoki bathtub accommodations in Korea, so I don't think I'll go back to Yufuin again, spending money and taking a flight. I would recommend experiencing a ryokan at least once.

    “It was good.”

I go to ryokans two or three times a year. This place is slightly remote compared to others, so a rental car is essential. The staff is really friendly, in line with the ryokan's reputation. However, the training of the foreign staff is somewhat lacking. When serving kaiseki, if a dish is accidentally placed down with noise or if food spills a little, it's typical in a ryokan for staff to apologize profusely and quickly clean it up, but the foreign staff simply served without any response. I don't think this issue will be bothersome for Korean guests experiencing a ryokan for the first time. (My younger brother, who lives in Korea, didn't mind at all.) The hot springs were nice since all the baths are private, but the scenery was somewhat disappointing (there's just no scenery to speak of). The cleanliness and tidiness of the room were satisfactory, as you can expect similar quality at this price from any ryokan. I had a good rest. When the foreign staff served dinner, they didn't react at all even if some soup spilled or if they made a loud noise placing dishes on the table. Having lived in Japan for 16 years and visited various ryokans, I can say that the foreign staff's service spirit is lacking. It doesn't align with the essence of the hospitality that Japanese ryokans provide. Aside from that, the service from the Japanese staff was very polite and good, and the hot springs were nice. The private baths didn't feel as natural as I expected, but the regular outdoor bath was smooth and great. The room seemed to have been renovated, and I really liked how clean the washbasin and shower room were. Oh, it's unfortunate that there was only one chair in the room. I think typically, two people would spend time in one room... and the overhead light hit my head every time I stood up from the chair, which was quite painful... I had to keep thinking about the light when getting up from the chair... I believe this is a downside felt depending on a person's nature.

    “I am truly, truly satisfied.”

I’m leaving a genuine review of my stay. First of all, I’m extremely satisfied!!! I will explain the reasons for my satisfaction and some minor drawbacks! 1. Great value for money! Compared to many ryokans, this place is relatively inexpensive, so I was worried, but the quality is truly top-notch for the price! 2. The staff is really friendly. When I checked in, they translated and explained how to use the ryokan and the house rules in Korean. They answered all of my questions kindly and even brought me towels! 3. There are many types of ryokans! There are a total of 5 baths, and 2 of them require a reservation, but the other ryokan is really spacious and beautiful! The other 3 ryokans are also very pretty and clean. Additionally, there’s a separate shower zone, and they provided shampoo and body wash, which was great. 4. The room is really clean and has a nice atmosphere! I stayed in a tatami room that was truly clean and well-heated! The bedding was really comfortable. The view from the terrace is also very pretty. 5. The ryokan itself is just beautiful, haha. The front yard is pretty, and the interior of the building is really spacious with plenty of photo spots! The yukata is also very pretty, hehe. 6. The dinner kaiseki and breakfast are truly Instagram-worthy... The presentation was beautiful, and it was delicious too! If I had to mention a drawback, it’s that the accommodation is a bit far from other places. It’s a little distant from Yufuin Station and tourist attractions, and there are no convenience stores nearby. However, I personally enjoy walking, so I walked about 30 minutes to the tourist spots and was able to access convenience stores on foot at night as well!! I’m really very satisfied, haha!
