Wonderful find!”

We wanted to get off the beaten track in Japan, and this beautiful peninsula was perfect. My husband and I were there with our two year old, and had been worried about going to a traditional fancy ryokan and having our daughter cry and wake people or otherwise wreak havoc. This is not a fancy, onsen-style ryokan, but a family run operation., and the public areas are definitely more family than zen - but in a nice, jumbly, warm way. The owners are wonderful, warm people, who welcomed us and our daughter with no hesitation. We were upgraded to a gorgeous room overlooking the ocean - so that was lucky! But the owner also took us on a little ride on his boat around the harbor, and made amazing meals that rivaled those I've had in upscale ryokans - as well as making special child's meals for our daughter, even without our asking. There is little to do in the town - which is what we wanted - but we do recommend getting meals at the ryokan, as they are both fabulous and possibly the only game in town for breakfast and dinner! There is a quite amazing shrine two minutes walk away that has morning and afternoon ceremonies, a lovely hike to a lighthouse, and some streets to wander - or you can just sit and watch the harbor. Matsue, which is a tourist town with a neat castle and etc. is about an hour away and made for a nice day trip.

A hidden gem near Sakaiminato”

I stumbled upon an article about Mihonoseki and decided to book Ryokan Fukumakan for a little escape from the city. It turned out to be a very memorable experience. The owner, Fukuma-san was kind enough to greet us at the JR Sakaiminato Station and drove us to the ryokan. Our room is a sea view room on the top floor. We were very pleased with the room as it offers a traditional and authentic ryokan-staying experience. Mihonoseki is a remote fishing village near Sakaiminato. It's a peaceful place without a lot of tourists. We enjoyed walking around and enjoy the scenery leisurely. The included dinner was very delicious with a wide range of fresh seafood. After dinner, we took a short walk in the stone-paved alley which took us back to the by-gone era of a hundred years ago. It's a pity that we have only stayed for one night. We wish to visit this magical place again.

A special out of the way place with a gracious generous host.”

This is a remote place on a peninsula outside of Matsue. There is bus transportation from Matsue station which we were unaware of. When our host learned we took a cab ride at 10000 yen, he upgraded our room to a house with two floors and comped us breakfast. Mihonosecki is a special seaside village with the most serene peaceful feel. They say it is filled with spiritual power and I am a believer. Call your host before your arrival. He will give you instruction on how to get there. He may even pick you up at sakaiminato train station which is closer to your final destination.

Great hidden destination!”

Mihonoseki is a fishing village that has been in place since the Edo Period. This Ryokan has been in the same family for 400 years. We stayed in a Japanese style room. With comfortable upgrades, and a view of the harbor. Room 502. Takashi, the owner speaks very good English, and is very hospitable. When he is not busy, he willingly picked us up at the Sakaiminato station, but it is also pretty easy to take a bus that comes right to the Ryokan, he also treated us to a ride in his fishing boat, which can be done during the months when the North wind is not blowing. The meals at the Ryokan are fabulous and extensive. There are a few small cafes also in the town, be sure to try the coffee in the coffee shop across from the tourist information office. They fresh grind the beans and serve it in a beautiful stoneware cup. Take the hike to the Azalea garden at the top of the hill and follow it back down to one of the shrines, or if you are a great hiker, to the lighthouse.

It’s better to have two meals included in the room price (because of quite few dining choices instead nearby). Also, a rental car should be necessary for foreigners.
