Wonderful Place”
The Kansuiro Ryokan is a majestic 100-year old building in Hakone. A two-minute shuttle-bus ride from Hakone-Yumoto, the Ryokan is perched right on the Haya River. The staff are extremely warm and welcoming and your stay begins with a tour of the facilities and some tea and sweets in your room. Everything is very traditional, and while charmingly old the building is well-kept and clean, especially the baths. There are the original baths in the basement, a private bath on the second floor and outside baths overlooking the river. All of them are beautiful and relaxing, and I found the onsen water in Hakone to be especially calming. The kaiseki dinner and breakfast were delicious and generous in portion. I highly recommend staying here if you would like a traditional onsen experience!

Visit the Japan of a different era”
After several days in hyper-modern Tokyo, a trip via Odakyu Romancecar to the Ryokan Motoyu Kansuiro was a blissful voyage back in time. After our 15-minute walk from Yumoto station, the staff were all at attention to welcome us to this wonderfully haunted century-old wooden building. Dinner is served very formally in the room and we so enjoyed the distinct way our gracious hostess, Ichino, pronounced English words like "drink" and "rice" as she set ceramic dishes, each in its own way a wonder, precisely on the table before us and gave them a turn. There are both indoor and outdoor hot springs and the outdoor springs at night, especially after a day's hike on the Old Tokaido Highway, are absolute heaven, while the indoor grotto is quite marvelous, as well. The futons the staff arranges on the floor after dinner are wonderfully comfortable. And do go upstairs to the 4th floor to see the old theatre and reception rooms.

Excellent facilities, friendly staff . Vegetarian / vegan friendly”
My girlfriend is a vegetarian and there are not many in Hakone that cater to this. Make sure you contact them beforehand to clearly specify any dietary requirements you may have, as Japanese have different definitions on vegetarian (they usually take fish and fish broth). We made the mistake of not doing so, but they were kind enough to quickly adjust for dinner so kudos to the staff! The facilities are excellent, try the outdoor onsen after peak hours with your loved ones. Also try getting a room with private onsen, I think it's worth the difference in money. Building itself is great and 400 years old, with many charming spots and some photos from the past you can have a look at. Amazing view too. Location wise, it is convenient and located on the main stretch of the road. You can either take a short walk from Hakone Yumoto station (recommended as you get to shop around and sample local delicacies before arriving at ryokan) or take a mini bus which costs about 100 yen.

GREAT ONSEN RYOKAN WITH VEGETARIAN OPTION”
We searched ages for somewhere that looked beautiful, didnt cost the earth and would do a vegetarian version of the amazing traditiknal japaneae dinner and breakfast. This place had it all and we had a wonderful stay. Location - Great. 15 minutes from the main hakone shinkansen station means its quick to get to the ryokan, but you still feel remote and buried in yhe hills. Bus stop right outside from which you can go direct to cable car, lake and views of Fuji. Perfect trade off for a 1 night stay. Staff - very friendly, not much english but all worked out 100% fine. The boy who served our dinner (in room) was very polite and didnt stop smiling :-) Food - this is a large part of the reason for coming. My girlfriend is vegetarian (no fish) but im not, so finding somewhere that did a "proper" veggie version of the standard menu was important. This place didnt disappoint - her food was as good as mine (or perhaps even better!). Just state your diatery requirements when you book and theyll get back to you to confirm. They also asked about egg and milk, so may also cater vegan? Onsen - The best bit! This place has 3. The first are public indoor baths (men and women separate). The second is a private indoor bath (just go in and flip the sign to "busy" and its all yours! So mixed sex is fine. ). The third is a public outdoor baths (again, split male female) which are STUNNING! Views over river, so oeaceful, wouldve stayed in there all evening if it hadnt been for dinner arriving! Note that after 10pm the outdoor ones become private (again, read mixed sex) with the same "flip the sign to busy" rule and a 30 minute time limit to make sure others get to go. Would 100% reccommend.

A fantastic splurge”
I travelled with a friend and we took a chance to splurge on this hotel for two nights and it was worth every penny. It was our favorite place to stay! The food was unbelievable and the service very personal and attentive. The onsen spa facilities are very nice with a river view open bath on the higher level and a very interesting grotto like onsen inside (plus one more tiled one). Our very spacious room had a river view and a private soaking tub with a mini patio and meals are served in your room. I even loved the lotions and soaps they supplied! Super impressed and the staff made you feel like you are the only guest there. Easy to get to by bus from Odawara station and the bus stops just past the ryokan. Hakone is a wonderful place to explore!

Unique and worthwhile experience ”
We had a great stay at Montoya Kansuiro. It was unlike anything we’ve ever done and were grateful for the extreme hospitality we received. Even as a young, foreign couple with tattoos we were treated like VIP’s and even upgraded to a river view room. Our off season February visit meant that the inn was very quiet and we had the onsen baths to ourselves, despite making more that a few dips in a short one night stay. The kaiseki dinner was beautifully presented and featured many high quality ingredients that were unfamiliar to us. I wish I had reserved a vegetarian meal in advance as I learned after arriving in Japan that I can’t stomach the taste of dashi broth, which is a base for most Japanese food. I tried my best and appreciated the quality of the meal and experience. I would recommend not planning to pack other sights or events into a stay at the ryokan, because there is a ouch relaxing and soaking to do here and it’s nice to make use of the expensive, but well worthwhile experience.

Amazing Traditional Ryokan”
An absolutely sublime experience. The room, staff, cuisine, and many onsen were all of impeccable quality and delivered a memorable experience like no other. We arrived just as the 2020 global pandemic was breaking out, so many businesses were closing, but the staff went to great lengths to ensure we enjoyed our time in Hakone. The many onsen here are all amazing, including the private one the Momiji (eng: Maple) room had. The outdoor baths are particularly enjoyable, especially around dusk and dawn, with a beautiful view of the river valley. If you are at all interested in history, this place has a legacy dating back to the 1600s. Many historical figures, from poets to politicians, have enjoyed Kansuiro's hospitality; and now you can too!

A truly amazing ryokan & staff we'll never forget!”
My guest and I really enjoyed this ryokan. The room accommodations were clean and inviting. The traditional interior decor and set up transported me to a different time. The dinner and breakfast meals and in-room service were excellent. I really loved the experience of visiting all the onsens available. It was a really lovely and relaxing time exploring each one. The staff was generally warm, helpful, and attentive. I'd like to offer my thoughts on a unique experience that happened during our stay. When a medical emergency occurred with my guest, the staff reacted immediately and went above and beyond all expectations. Each available staff member made every effort to try to assist and guide us through the medical services available in the area. They were in no way obligated to help us to this extent of care and dedication. My guest & I have only positive and grateful feelings toward this establishment. We highly recommend staying at this ryokan and hope to return soon!

Exceptional”
Awesome 400 year old ryokan with lots of charming photo spots and nooks to explore. The outdoor onsen was fabulous! I didn't go for the indoor ones because the view from the outdoor onsen was not to be missed. Food and service were good and the sleep was the best I had during the whole trip to Japan.

Hotel is an attraction itself though a bit old”
Only took a few min of Orange hotel shuttle ride (100 Yen per person per ride) to reach to the hotel from the Hakone-yumoto station. The hotel itself is a historic attraction with many nice antiques, arts on the 4th floor which definitely worth checking out. The hotel is very quiet, atmosphere is a little bit cold and mystery. Dinner and breakfast are tasty and well prepared, it's just that we would expect better explanation in English. The young lady who served our dinner and breakfast was extremely nice, but didn't speak much English, therefore although I was very curious about everything in the hotel, we couldn't communicate much. That was a bit pity. Room setup is definitely on the old side. We were staying on the first floor, I could sense the 'smell of history' - the humidity and even mold in the room. Note sure if the upper floor would be better. Sound of A/C is a bit annoying at night during sleep. Overall I would recommend this hotel to first-time Hakone visitors.

Food and views are outstanding! Just a piece of heaven on earth! ”
This 400 year old gem is authentic Japanese heaven. We are a family of 3 vegans and had a lot of trouble finding food in Japan that was compliant. The food here is easily the best we have eaten, vegan, or not. The staff was incredibly helpful and kind. I really cannot praise them enough for anticipating our every need. The hot spring bath was relaxing and scenic. Even the walk to the outdoor bath was beautiful. Please be advised that you must pay cash upon checkout, so be ready for that. Every detail in this Ryokan is beautiful down to the ikebana floral arrangements in every corner. Did I mention the food? This was one of the most memorable moments of our time in Japan!

Lovely traditional ryokan experience”
Our Family (2 elementary-aged kids, 2 adults) enjoyed our stay experiencing a traditional ryokan stay in this historic building - especially the lovely dinner & breakfast (served in room) and the multiple bath options. Staff was exceedingly attentive throughout our stay.

Full on Ryokan Experience ”
Stayed just a night. We were given room with an en-suite bath but no hiroen (table and chairs by the window in a separate tatami area). Original booking showed a hiroen and no en-suite, only attached toilet, not bath. I like hiroen so I’m not sure I consider it an upgrade or not 😅. Very clean and authentic. I like how despite being very old (the building is 100 years old) the en-suite bath is new. Room is very nice and large for 2 pax. No view unfortunately. And it is clearly seen by people going to the outdoor Onsen. A bit disconcerting since the sliding windows do not offer full privacy 🤪. Meals were served in-room and they were exquisite and far too much even for a Japanese food lover like me. True Kaiseki with dishes being brought bit by bit. The hostess attached to us spoke good English and was very friendly. Our room was on the 2nd floor. Onsen on the 1st and 3rd floor as well as the nice albeit small rotenburo up the hill.

Treat yourself”
Want to just get away for a while, mentally and physically? Look no further. I spent three (far too short days) here, walking in nature and then retiring to the wonderful outdoor baths before enjoying the seclusion of the suite. Only to be interrupted by some of the best food I've had in all of my month in Japan. If I'd known how good it was I'd have had a different itinerary, but was already booked in for further travels. Go in the autumn, Nov/Dec, when the forests all around are resplendent greens, yellows and reds. Hike the Old Tokaido Road. Get up early, leave after breakfast and head to MotoHakone (bus leaves outside) and you might catch a glimpse of Mt Fuji before the mist rolls in. Bring a long book.

Wonderful find! The staff were super friendly, and accommodating! And the outdoor onsen was lovely. Certainly helped with my aches and pains for traveling. We stayed only one night, but I would've happily stayed more!
