Best of the best hostel”
Stayed at Ryokan @ Muntri Street for 1 nights with my friends. This hostel has impressed me in all aspects from the moment I checked in till the end of my stay. The staff were all very friendly and attentive to assist me. They were willing to service you the best, this is rare in a hostel. Moreover, there was some sort of butler who escort us to our assigned room. wow! I am paying less than 50 bucks! The room was clean and well designed. Environment of the entire hostel make me feel that i am home! In overall, the hostel is much more beyond what you paid. I would definitely recommend this hostel. It's a must to stay here when visiting Penang.
neat and tidy hostel with excellent service”
overall, i am very satisfied with my stay with roykan @ muntri street. the hostel was clean, staff was friendly and nice, aircon was well working. we had 8 friends, so we booked 2 four bed dorm. it has not failed our expectation. all of us have a very good impression on this hostel. we said we wouldn't mind to come back to ryokan to stay for our next visit. there's a reason ryokan@muntri street have a good review rating on agoda. the location of the hostel is strategic in george town. it is near to many famous restaurants, night pubs and local arts. it is also within walking distance to the seaside.
Simple, basic hotel with prime location”
Ryokan offers a very basic and comfortable 2-person room at an affordable price. Location of the hostel is very good and very near to various attractions like the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, museums and the ferry from BUtterworth. Very easy to find the hostel which is tucked away in a quiet lane (Jalan Muntri). Staff are friendly, approachable and knowledgable about the area and how to get to places outside of Georgetown. Good job!
An enjoyable stay in a ryokan-styled hostel!”
I’m going to Japan end of this year on a budget travel. I came across the word ‘ryokan’ often enough and it made me wondered what it means exactly by ‘ryokan’. When I found out that there’s a ryokan-styled hostel in Penang, I grabbed the opportunity to give it a try. I was simply amazed and loved my stay there. It was unfortunate that I planned for only a single night stay. From outside, the hotel might mislead you. You must step over the threshold to see for yourself what an amazing hotel this is. For a budget hotel, this is a fantastic place to stay. Security is definitely a high score for the hotel; something that I thought would not exist for a budget hotel. The bed was comfortable. As it was a weekday, I had the whole room to myself. Amazingly, since the showers and toilets were for both genders, they were clean. Shampoo and bath foam were also provided. The heater worked too. I could have go on and on about the hotel. But I would suggest that you stay there and experience it for yourself. It would be worth your stay there.
Great Hostel and service with a smile”
Ryokan @ Muntri Street Penang My experienced stayed 4-night in Ryokan Hostel. The administrators organizer they were excellent extremely helpful patient and caring for their guests. The house keepers are helpful and kind. they takes good care of their facility clean and spotless. Accommodation price are reasonable. Interior design is modern colourful and most important good quality of mattress and comfortable reflexing environment throughout the share area. Ryokan is conveniently located right in the heart of the Georgetown and easily get access from AZ I highly recommend to all traveler.
Still my favourite place here in Muntri Boutique Hostel. Solo travelers can opt for the dorm (mix/female only) room if you are ok with sharing toilet. The cleanliness is up to standard, breakfast is provided in the morning. Location wise - good. if you are driving, get a parking spot in the opposite of the road (RM25/day overnight) and then travel around uber. it will be much more convenient than to find parking outside!
Before going to Penang, I'm planning to let my kids stay in the BnB style hostel. The first impression i saw the Ryokan Muntri hostel's photo, I like it, so I decided to choose it as our hostel in Georgetown for one night. As we reached there, my kids love this hostel very much. The location of this hotel is very good, we can walk around to see the artworks. The staff are very friendly and helpful. I definitely will recommend this hostel for my friend who wants to enjoy the BnB style hostel.
Do not belittle this hotel by its outlook. From the entrance, u may think it is a budget small hotel. But hey...it is really a hidden gem. The room is cozy n bed is sooo comfortable that we really enjoy just laze in the room watching tv on bed. The bathroom is clean n spacious. & I love the shower. It's a rain shower, water pressure is good and its so easy to adjust the water temperature. U know u hate the time when ur shower water is running slow..n the handle is loose n the showerhead keep falling? U dun face this here!! Great!! :D I also think the location of this hotel is perfect! Google "muntri street! U know u r at the heart of georgetown! N U got plenty of cafes around. Staffs are super friendly! N they are young. So it kinda fit into the concept of a chic hotel. Haha. Well, u know what I mean? u wouldnt feel the chic if the staff is 40+ year old uncle right? Now, if u ask me what is the thing that I least like about.. I would say its the noiseeee. Ok, while the room is cozy..but our double room is at the ground floor and there are dormitory rooms upstairs with wooden floor. Thats bad. U can hear sounds of ppl walking/running around upstairs. If u are very sensitive to noise..this may not be an ideal place. Well for us...the coziness beats the noise. So we still hearts it! ♥ will be back.
Great location and vibe ”
The Ryokan was overall a great hostel! The location is excellent in Georgetown-- very close to all of the typical things you'll want to see in Penang. It has a cool atmosphere and nice vibe with good facilities-- outdoor seating area, indoor beanbags for hanging out and reading, nice showers and bathrooms-- and everywhere was clean and well-maintained.Included breakfast has quite a few options and the staff was very helpful and friendly. The only disappointment was the bedroom. After everything else was so cool, it was just very simple and actually rather uncomfortable for me. And it got rather noisy from people in other rooms moving around. But it did have lockers, individual lights, and plugs, which I appreciate.
Still a best value”
This was my 5th stay, the first being in 2013. Over that time, it has consistently been clean, well maintained, and had a great staff. The free breakfast is ok - better than average hostel food - but with so many great food options in Georgetown/Penang, I generally skip it. While it is located on a quiet street, it is only a couple of minutes walk to coffee shops, bars, restaurants, and the ever present 7-11. :) My only complaint, and it is a small one, is the quality of the wifi. They use a login system similar to the Zone5 one that you see at Starbucks these days. Very slow to log in - at a minimum, about 30 seconds or more. Additionally, the wifi signal, while available throughout the hostel, is exceptionally slow. On this past trip, Skype video was unusable and voice was not consistent. If you need good quality wifi, you might want to try somewhere else or hit one of the local coffee shops or, as I do, get a local sim card with a data package. Very reasonably priced in Malaysia. So, despite that one complaint, I will continue to stay here for the foreseeable future.
Great location with very nice room”
i really love this hostel very very much...it's a very nice hostel, beautiful and clean, the staff there also very friendly and helpful. it near komtar, bus station and a lot of attractive place at penang. At nigth we can go Chuliat street, love lane, campbell street it all very near only, and there is al lot of nice food over ther...only a few minutes destance only form Ryokan. I sure my next vist to penang will continue stay ay Ryokan again. Thank you
Great hostel in George Town ever and value for money”
I enjoyed my stay here more than my stay at other hostel in Penang. This is my 3rd stayed in this hostel and will definitely come back again. I stayed 4 nights here and got free upgraded from 6 bunk beds to 4 bunk beds without paying extra. The hostel is right near major places in Georgetown, a world heritage site. Location is nearby to Love Lane & Chulia Street, the happening area and also food court. Everything was perfect from clean towel to comfortable bed with quality pillow & blanket, every bed has an electrical outlet and two USB ports, lockable cabinet with a lock to leave your belongings, enough clean separate toilet and shower. The shower provide body shampoo and shampoo for us to shower, so there's no need for traveller to bring these items. Excellent buffet spread of breakfast with prata roti canai, noodles, toast with jem & butter, sausages, baked beans, mashed potato, hard boiled egg, coffee & tea. Half boiled egg upon request and free flow of filter water all day.
Best Hostel in Georgetown ”
This place is exceptional! Fred, the owner, is super friendly and accommodating. He makes a genuine effort to make sure that everyone is enjoying their stay at Ryokan. Highlights: 1. Location is perfect. Short walk to restaurants, hawker stalls, the famous Red Garden, popular Georgetown sights, Love Lane but is still in a quiet neighborhood. 2. Clean. Everything. Everywhere. All the time. 3. Breakfast is actually filling. 4. Staff are always helpful and friendly. 5. The hostel offers activities all throughout the week, for all types of travellers, trekking and beach trips for nature lovers, sight-seeing, walking tours, night-life, going to the Sunday pop up market together or going to see Malaysian bands. I had a wonderful time. I can't wait to come back!
i stayed 3 nights here and wish could have stayed more nights! i had a single ensuite room which costs rm136 - a bit higher than most other backpacker hostels but this one worths! the room is simple yet clean and cozy, with big lcd tv (never used it though), very stable wifi connection, nice bathroom, comfortable big bed and wardrobe. location is great - right opposite to muntri mews cafe (nice one), just 5 minutes walk from love lane and 10 minutes from chulia street where you get almost everything. however the hostel itself is in a more laid-back location so no need to worry about noise. there are large bean sofas in the common area. public toilets are also clean and nice-looking. my room has a bit noise of water from the air-con pipeline but that is not a big distraction to sleeping. smart-card entry to the dormitory area so it is very safe.
nice, comfortable 2 nights stay”
everything was perfect!. The price is highly reasonable. I've been here three times before and they never dissapoint. They keep upgrading and improving every single aspect. The floors are now covered with mat. And the breakfast provided is much satisfying! Thumbs up for ryokan muntri street. Highly recommended for backpackers!
More than a 2-star hotel!”
The staff were fluent in English and very helpful! Whilst it rates itself as a 2-star hotel, there is housekeeping daily and the design of the boutique hotel expresses itself as a very welcoming and stylish hostel while having that artsy Penang feel. Keep a lookout for the board opposite the check-in counter - there was deals for cafes near the hostel the last time we stayed there. ;)
Value for Money and nice location”
Ryokan located in Jalan Muntri next to Love Lane, if you want to experience the backpacker life in Penang island , here will be the great place. A hostel build in an old Chinese house, was a great 1st impression to me. I love this hostel because of the friendly facilities, like we have to take off our shoe when we enter the chilling and room area and they prepare us a shoe rack to leave our shoe, its make me feel more comfortable when i relax in the hostel. Individual lamp in each dorm is a good idea, for us not to interrupt other at night, yet we can do some reading and writing on the bed. Nearby the hostel, there was few nice bar and cafe for me to visit.
Clean and strategic location”
Ryokan @ Muntri Street is clean, reasonable and nice. It is located at the heart of Georgetown city. Therefore, you can spend your time in Georgetown by walking or bicycling.
A good stay for backpackers.”
We are group of 5 travelling and found out the place nice and suitable for backpackers. The toilet and showers is clean and enough and we save a lot of time on this. Anyway, for those who are driving, beware that the guesthouse don't have specific parking and you have to park along narrow Muntri street. Muntri street is a coupon needed parking everyday from 9am -9pm and as and alternative, you should park at Chulia street (the main street next to Muntri street if you are travelling on weekend as the coupon only need until Saturday 1pm. Also take note that the guest house is very strict on their check in time even though the room is available. Other than that, it was overall a pleasant experience staying in the dorm for all of us.
it was a nice experience to stay at Ryokan @ Muntri Street. Especially at noon, it nears to cat cafe and camera museum which truly recommended. More, at night, pubs and local bars are around this area so Ryokan is truly convenient. Another plus of its convenient, just few house near Ryokan, there is bike and motorbike rental. About the place itself, it clean and i can say that they give good quality pillow! Oh and the socket are available in every bed, another plus point!
