Best hotels & accommodations in Kyoto

My husband and I splurged on this hotel to experience the westside of Kyoto during out visit and we weren't disappointed. (We stayed on the eastside for two days and one night.) The staff was incredibly pleasant and welcoming. They helped to store our luggage before check-in so that we could sightsee until our room was ready and when we arrived for our room they had al...

For the price and the location, this place was a steal! You'd better book this fast before it gets popular and the prices sky rocket! The rooms available on Agoda were for the suite-style rooms. Apparently there are normal rooms there, but not posted on Agoda for booking. The suite style rooms were out of the world, considering the prices of ryokan in the area. The hot...

The location is nice and quiet (kyoto is a real tiny town and the hotel near a lot of bus station), room is the biggest during my japan stay. Staff is nice and helpful, can speak a little Chinese but not native speaker, so it’s better if you know some Japanese too. We booked a new year eve dinner here and it’s really good taste and laaaaarge quantity hahaha, we can bar...

If you love immersing yourself in a culture and just going with the flow, a ryokan is a great way to experience a part of the long and ancient culture of Japan. A traditional style hotel, it is a different universe from your 4 or 5 star modern hotels, but as a unique experience, it is superlative. I cannot recommend enough that you go for the full experience - the kais...

Wonderful onsen for the price! I arrived early and left my bags with them which were waiting for me in my room when I came back to check in after sightseeing. although it's in a beautiful area and located across the street from a train station I gave it a satisfactory on the location since the train line that runs to it isn't from Kyoto station. There is another sta...

Junei hotel was fantastic for our 3 night stay in Kyoto. The staff were extremely helpful booking us restaurants and answering all our questions with their great knowledge of the city. Hotel rooms and bathrooms are quite large for Japan's standards and our room included a 'handy' phone which we could take with us for the duration of our time there. This helped a great ...

I love this ryokan. We booked 3 rooms. It's quiet new since it's newly renovated so it doesn't have that old feel. So we get best of both worlds, clean and new plus traditional style. It even includes a booklet that explains the different parts of a ryokan room which I think was cool. Toilet was ok, much better with a modern shower booth which I think was excellent...

We arrived at the hotel early and was told that check in was strictly 3pm or after. Once we were brought to our room, the attendant who was dressed in a kimono was able to help us with our questions despite her limited knowledge of the English vocabulary. The room was way above my expectations (neat, tidy and clean) with all the amenities provided. For dinner we chose ...

I spent a month researching ryokans and hotels in Kyoto and I'm glad I picked Yuzuya in the end. I wanted my trip to be perfect because it was so precious for me to travel with family. I want to say Thank You to Yuzuya for making the stay delightful. I was concerned with the noise mentioned in some posts, but in the end it did not become a bother. I was lucky to get...

Fantastic Ryokan about 50 minutes north of Kyoto nestled in the mountains right off of a river. My girlfriend and I arrived in the rain and were greeted by three employees with umbrellas who guided us into their beautiful establishment. The room we stayed in was amazing - we had a balcony with luscious green views and could hear the relaxing sounds of the river ambli...

This is literally the best accommodation I've ever stayed in my life, no exaggeration. The owners and the staff were always respectful and took care that everything was in place. They provided us food every time and it was delicious, the location is excellent, the beds were super comfortable. My intention to visit Kyoto was to immerse in the Japanese culture and the ow...

This hotel had it all! While the hotel did take some time to get to from Kyoto, the staff literally ran to us to greet us outside with a warm welcome. The hotel has both public and private baths. The public bath times change genders so you can experience both rooms. They are both lovely, but one of them includes an outdoor bath overlooking the mountains (absolutely bre...

Me and my hasbund had a great experience in Kyoto, and this hotel helped our trip pretty well. Hotel offered us free room upgrade, and we had comfy room with usuful private bathroom. We could buy 1day bus pass at the hotel every day, used traditional big public bath any time. I hope we can come back to this hotel. Next time, I hope they can provide laundry room and mea...

This delightful Ryokan was just outside Kyoto. We planned our trip in the morning so that we would have our last port of call Kinkakuji. From there we hunted around for a Lawson station and bought a few snacks and drinks for after dinner. We caught 2 taxies near the "Golden Pavilion". The cost was each which was well worth it since we had a group of 6 and we were all ...

I have been to Japan four times and out of the many accommodations I have been to. This is the prime example of Japanese hospitality. You are served a cup of hot tea, local matcha chocolate and cheese cake once you arrive. They are always thanking you for everything and bowing to you with much respect and courtesy. Every single staff is polite and makes you feel at hom...

This was a very traditional Ryokan in old town Kyoto, great service of all staff in the Hotel exceptional traditional Japanese Food, very attentive and helpful owner and staff. If you are looking for a traditional Japan Hotel experience in Kyoto, then that's the place to stay. Arrigato and sayonara until next time, we enjoyed our stay there a lot.

The staff are extremely friendly and helpful, and you instantly sense that they love their jobs and are happy to please the guests and ensure they enjoy their stay. We were greeted at the entrance by a nice and beautifully dressed lady in Japanese traditional attire. We were then ushered to the lobby and offered tea while our reservation was being quickly processed. ...

The staff were incredibly friendly. We stored our luggage at the hotel both before and after the trip; very nice if you know how hard it can be to find an open luggage locker at the station during busy times! Our room was immaculate and had lots of tiny details in it, like a fresh flower next to the calligraphy scroll, and what I think was a yoga mat rolled up and wai...

It was a great experience to stay at Sumiya Kihoan! Nice delicious dinner and breakfast and a cozy room. Especially I really love outdoor onsen(hot spring). It treated my skin so nicely. Actually it was a little accident during my stay, when i was at outdoor onsen I fell on the floor then my both legs are hurted. As soon as I talked reception staff, she treated me so c...

Location is good with bus stop within 5 min walk. Right next to Toji pagoda so very easy to locate on map. We took a taxi from kyoto station, cost us 1000yen. A supermaket and minimart is within walking distance. Room is clean and sparkling. Building is new as this hotel is open this year. bathroom is good size and a washing machine (detergent is provided). Small balc...

Everything is perfect: 1) View from the room is stunning ; 2) the dining experience is Ichiban; 3) the room is super clean and comfy (fell asleep on the tatami in 10 seconds :D; the onsen is truly relaxing); 4) the service quality is excellent and impeccable. Will definitely come back again ! I already miss this place .

The surrounding landscape of this place is peaceful and beautiful. Also loved the onsen part. A bit of a distance from Kyoto city (so be prepared for that travel), but this is also the draw (quiet and relaxing environment). You can spend the daytime exploring Kyoto and surrounding areas (going via either (1) bus & hotel shuttle, (2) subway and taxi, or (3) taxi all the...

We booked in here for two nights to make it stay in Kyoto special. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The location was great for people needing to be close to the station. Downtown is around 25 minutes away walking but we hired bikes and was able to get there quicker (also a taxi back in the evening was only around 1000 yen). The room was beautiful, spaciou...

This is our first trip to Kyoto, which has most traditional culture in Japan. We were lucky to choose to live here. First of all, the master was very kind and the girl AOI was so lovely and helpful who also mastered English conversation. Every request was answered and satisfied. They have two bathroom and we need to reserve before using it. The Japanese bathroom was am...

From booking the reservation to the staff bowing until our shuttle was out of sight, Yunohana resort has been one of the best, if not, THE best experience from beginning to end. They have staff who speak English so they were helpful when confirming my booking before our trip. They also emailed us a couple days before our check-in day to confirm our stay and to ask abo...

The husband and I both really enjoyed our stay here. As foreigners the breakfast was always very interesting, delicious and had something new for us to try. Before Japan we never bathed with other people, and it was really lovely to end your day of tourism soaking in the hot bathtub downstairs. The room was also very roomy and cozy. It was the largest room of the 4...

We are 2 adults with an eight year old kid. We are pleased of the good location of the ryokan. It is in a quiet residental neighbourhood so it was nice to have a glimpse of a residential area away from the tourist site. The ryokan is near a metro station and buses to sight seing sitesby, about 5-10 minutes walking distance. From the 3 days that we were there we took on...

Location – Great, reason why I booked this place! It is 7’straight line walk to Kyoto station, about 4 blocks. The location can be confusing to cab drivers, so please follow the PDF directions the hotel staff sends ahead of check in. Service – Best part of my experience here! Memorable friendly service, organized hotel staff. Maria, at the front desk, whom we interact...

Sometimes, it’s hard to review a place because it was such a special experience that words can’t seem to do it justice. Ryokan Harimaya is one of these places. The family that runs this little traditional inn is wonderful in every way, and staying here is an opportunity to have a very local experience. We stayed for 6 days at this inn, and it was the highlight of our ...

The room was great--clean and well-air-conditioned. Tatami bed was clean and comfortable. Hot water service and complimentary green tea. The shared bathroom and shower rooms were orderly and well-maintained. The whole hotel has this old world visual charm that comes from the architecture, which is nice. The best part of the hotel was the kind front desk manager. ...

I arrived around midnight. Even though I did not provide Mr Momoyama enough notice prior to my arrival, he was kind enough to arrive to the hotel and provide assistance to my entry; he even carried my 20 kg bag to the third level. The hotel was clean and a good experience. I asked Mr Momoyama about activities and things to do in Kyoto and he was very helpful and pati...

We arrived in this hostel only to find out that they were overbooked..but the thing is I think that is a blessing. The Kyoto Happy Family is an old, rundown hostel with lots of mosquitoes. It is value for money as for the price it is cheap (Japan standard) and the location is central. So, they were overbooked. But the staff WAS EVER apologetic and offered to transfer u...

Ryokan Kyoraku is a perfect base for exploring the wonderful city of Kyoto. The main train station is a few minutes' walk away, and there is a bus stop practically outside the door, for the line that takes you past many of the main temples and historical areas. Great wifi and very helpful staff. They provided very detailed information for transportation, attractions...

Managed to only stay for a night as it was fully booked during the period of my visit. The staff were very friendly and made us felt at home. I was slightly disappointed that they were not serving the Japanese breakfast (which is highly recommended by many) during my stay. I love the fact that the ryokan is situated a reasonable 10 mins walk to/from Kyoto Station and i...

The Kyoto Higashiyamasou is in an excellent location. The staff was some of the friendliest staff I've ever dealt with at a hotel, which is quite typical in Japan. The only negative is there is no restaurant at the hotel and the hours of the restaurants nearby as quite sporadic. Other than that, the stay was great!

It was a good experience for ryokan hotel with affordable price. The location nearby with the main road and convenient store and walking distance from kyoto station. The room and the facilities are complete and clean. All the workers able to speak good english and that makes everything even better, we've been entertained by one of the workers named Mai (if im not mista...

We stayed five nights with our baby. The old ladies gave us the best room in the house and were giving everything to make us feel comfortable. They e.g blocked the Japanese Bathroom for us, so that we could enter when we were ready and also tried to keep adjacent rooms free during our stay. Of course this may also have been because the walls in this century in old hous...

good location, kyoto city bus is just outside the hotel, very near the temples and famous shopping streets. inside the hotel room, emm....maybe a bit old....the tatami is little bit sunken, ceiling wallpaper a little bit broken. Second time to Kyoto, and just wanted to stay a day, and overnight there to do some nearby visit. Great location, just opposite Kyoto Station (exit near Porta underground mall) and bus station (buses to some of the attractions e.g. Kiyomizudera, Nishiki Market, Gion). You can also access through the underground mall (just be mindful up is only staircase). Booked room...

Don't pick this hotel expecting to gaze at beautiful gardens from your tatami floored room. This hotel is located in a busy part of the city with no views. Now that those expectations are out of the way, do pick this hotel for it's great location and large clean rooms. It seems that Japanese hotels aren't very flexible on the check-in time rule. 4:00 pm check-in is qui...

The ryokan is in a quiet street not far from an underground station, but you'll have to climb a little to get there. Tammy was a great host, she might pick you at the station if she can. We had booked a small room but she upgraded to a bigger one since it was unoccupied at the time. The bathroom are clean and the kitchen have everything needed to make a nice breakfast ...

Ryokan shimizu is definitely the perfect place for a peaceful and traditional stay in Kyoto. The location is very near to Kyoto station and everything was convenient. The owner and the staffs at the ryokan were extremely friendly and helpful, and would recommend places around Kyoto or help you to get around. My daughter and I were touched by their little moves such as ...

This was our first time in Japan and this our first experience in a Ryokan and wow were we blown away with this place! Ohanabo Inn is an excellent place to stay and experience the traditional Japanese way. You MUST also ask for their dinner option, it is DEFINITELY worth the extra money as it is an 8 course meal and is served in your room by the super friendly staff. Y...

Location: Incredible — right in the heart of the quiet, quaint historic Gion district in Kyoto. A four minute walk across the bridge to the bus stop to/from Kyoto Station (which is only an 8 minute bus ride away!). The various metro stations nearby are only a 5-15 minute walk away, too, depending on which one you need to go to. Fushimi Inari was only ten minutes away! ...

Was our best accommodation in Japan! A bit expensive, but it was worth it! The hotel/ryokan was very near a very convenient station. The station was also at a very good location in Kyoto. Japanese breakfast seemed like a small serving, but it was actually very filling! No internet in the rooms, but there was Wi-Fi in the lobby. The room was very clean and looks very au...

It was a nice clean place to stay at. The location was great. Would recommend staying here if you want the full Japanese experience. The staff were also very friendly. The walls are very thin so if you are a light sleeper it maybe difficult to sleep. Also, it appears you are able to smoke in the rooms and it may bother some people who do not like smoke. Other than that...

Everything went well especially the services is really good. The lady in Concerige speaks fluent English which is easily understand. My travel partner and I wanted to stay in a moderately priced accommodations for our first visit to Kyoto. Compared to other "Western" style hotels that we have stayed in Japan, we were really impressed with the size of the room. Definitely a comfortable space for two people. We also had ample space for our luggage. This modern ryokan was able to provide us with a tra...

Overall, a great stay. We hadn't stayed in a ryokan before and I have to confess, didn't really know what expect. Nenrinbo really surpassed these expectations with the staff's attention detail from the initial welcome. The meals we're excellent really excellent both the kaiseki on the first night and the shabu shabu on the second night were great. It takes a little mo...

I am a Japanese who emigrated to the US in 1986, so I know what to expect from hotels/inns at various price points. A quality traditional ryokan (Japanese inn) tends to be pricey regardless of location. Izuyasu is in Kyoto, and if one wishes to experience the real thing in Kyoto, it doesn’t come at a bargain price. Visitors need to keep that in mind when deciding where...

The hotel is located near Kyoto station. so its very easy to get there. The staff is very friendly. Explain everything that we need to know and inform about the current situation (unfortunately we came when the thypoon came, so its rain everyday). The breakfast served in Japanese style. We love it so much. The food are delicious. Nothings left in our plate. Very value...

The room is amazing, beautiful cozy and seemed designed, although they don’t provide one single king bed but it shouldn’t be a matter. The atmosphere the staff is incredible, one of the best local non chain entry luxury hotel I’ve ever stayed. Some might think twice of the money so did I; but it was truly worth it, do not hesitate when booking. Also the breakfast is a...

Mugen is such a gem. Set in a beautifully redesigned former kimono shop, the renovation is so tasteful and done with such care and attention to detail. The location is very convenient - close to some good bus lines that take you right to many of Kyoto's main attractions but tucked away on a quiet street and with a public bathhouse only steps away. *swoon* Mugen combine...

This ryokan is very comfortable, and you get an authentic experience. Having a hot bath in their facilities is amazing after a long day of walking around Kyoto. Would highly recommend Sakanoue because of their wonderful staff who really look out for their guests.

When we first arrived in the room, it was on the smaller side and there was not a lot of room for our belongings. We had prepaid for the room, and concerned we had overpaid. However, in time we discovered the details that made for a lovely experience (first time in a Ryokan). From the comfy beds, quality sheets, soft towels, comfortable robes and pajamas, amazing ced...

This ryokan was located about an hour outside of central Kyoto by bus but was certainly worth the trip. Staff were extremely nice and friendly - very welcoming to weary travelers! The location was serene with beautifully attended gardens and coi fish pond. The meals (breakfast/dinner) were amazing! Best I had in my travels around Japan. I would recommend this ryokan...

It was a great experience! Staff were really nice, they literally did everything for the guests. They were extremely polite and always said thank you to the guests. This little gem in the centre of Kyoto puts you in touch with the true Japanese culture through great service, amaaaazing product, and by far the most professional and humble hosts you will ever come across in any hotel! Overall wonderful experience. Yukiko and the whole team there are absolutely fantastic and made our stay truly memorable.

For anyone wanting to experience the way a Ryokan would have been along the Tokaido in the days of the Shogun please stay at Seikoro. The service is magnificent, friendly and speaks English. The room is traditional except for the free wifi and spacious. Having your own Japanese bathroom in your room is a luxury. There is also a public bath too that should be tried. Thi...
Traveler impressions of Kyoto
Great place to visit, lots of old/historical sites to see, mixture of modern shopping and relaxing areas.
I loveeeee Kyoto! Kyoto has impressed me so sooo much, this city has been one of my dream destination since The memory of Geisha movie.
many streets.morning and nights have its special.walking all is not enough.many things to buy at the Big Camera.
Kyoto is a fun city with a lot of attractions. It's easy to get around but I wouldn't recommend more than 3 days as there are a LOT of shrines and temples.
it is such a cosy, cultural, accessible and friendly city! it sounds royal and big but really a perfect sized destination for a 4-5 nights stay!
Beautiful city, culturally magnificent, easy to get around, transportation excellent and very clean! Food is reasonably priced if you know where you to go to eat.
Kyoto has many well-preserved historic places of interest. It is the main place to see all things unique to Japan.
If you are a sporty type, just skip the crowded bus system entirely and rent a good bike! I've done Kyoto by bike 5 times now and as long as it ain't raining, bike is the WAY to go!
i cant think of any reason not going to kyoto in a lifetime. i visited to kyoto during the red leafs high season.
Kyoto has lots of culture and sightseeing places. Good variety of restaurants. Bus system is easy to use and to get around town.
my husband and i really enjoyed kyoto. alot to see, many temples, shrines. shopping is amazing. you never have to leave the kyoto station.
The temples is beautiful & attractive. However, the season (begining Nov)I went the leaves still not turn to red color a bit disappoint.
We spent two nights and one whole day. We visited the Arashiyama bamboo forest, the Romantic Scenic Railway and Sanjusangen-do.
Will come back again, wearing kimono leisure walk along the streets its really enjoy, recommended !!!
A combined bus and subway pass is a great way to get around Kyoto. There a a number of great temples, castles, etc for sightseeing.
Kyoto is an ancient city that last for more than a thousand year, thus it has a lot of old, historical places, and also temples.
If you are a culture buff, this is the place for you. I love how they try to preserve their culture.
Kyoto is a must to see in Japan, plenty of amazing temples, spectacular gardens, very vibrant city. In my opinion the gloden Kinkakuji pavilion in northen part of the city is the best what tourist can see in Kyoto.
make sure to stop by at the shopping streets near Gion. there is a lot of fine quality tea shops along the area
There is so much to see in and around Kyoto. We stayed three days, but would definitely return and stay longer.
It's really nice to visit the different temples, the famous bridge, food is absolutely amazing! I highly recommend to go to Osaka too!
Kyoto is the quintessential "old Japan." Go and don't stay for less than two nights. For nightlife, people who don't want to go to Snack/Pub hostess bars or the few nightclubs near Kiyamachi go to Osaka instead, but everything is great here: history, culture, architecture, nature!
A big city with a lot of trains underground.. It is helpful to have some one who knows Japanese if you want to take trains or buses.
Love this small little town that is full of historical. If you love culture, this is a town for you.
Google map is very helpful, it will recommend you how to take a bus / MTR and the roads are not complicated to find.
