Location is Great!”
We booked entire 4-bed dormitory with own toilet. Cons: The room is in the basement so it was very cold and only 1 heater provided. The bathroom is a bit small. It will be great if hostel can provide a pair of slipper in the toilet, hair dryer (currently only available in one of the shared toilet - only 1 unit as the other one is out of service), as well as a floor mat outside the toilet. Pros: The hostel is near to the train station and main attractions. There is a storage room in the Hostel which is an added value. We can store our luggage before we can check-in at 2pm and after check-out for FREE. The check out time is 10am which is quite early but it is okay as we went out early in the morning to explore York. The staffs were friendly. The guy staff was so nice and offered us to carry our luggage. In the common area, there are utensils and water boiler. Free WiFi in the room and public area makes everything convenient and easy. It is a good and nice place to stay.
The 1st & best experience with Hostel and yes I select the right one!!”
Overall it's the best Hostel for my 1st experience as female solo traveller!! You will get a best treat from them and believe me you will definitely love this hostel for sure!! Thanks guys for your warm hospitality.
Best hostel I've stayed in the UK”
-Best location (very close to York station, city center) -Cheap but not comprosing quality -Spaceous room -Private space with individual bed-curtains and lamp - I loved it the most! -Quality breakfast for only 3.5 pound -Free luggage storage I would stay there if I visit York again and I wish other hostels in other cities are like Safestay york.
Beautiful ancient townhouse”
The hostel is located inside the city walls, about 5 mins' walk from the train station. It's a very beautiful old townhouse with history, with a large common room downstairs. We booked a 4-bed room but was upgraded to an 8-bed room, which equals very large space. Our windows overlook a beautiful chapel and garden. The hostel staff is nice. Breakfast is good, although comprises mostly of croissant, ham and cheese, and milk and cereal. The only downside is the stairs - beware if you have heavy luggage, although the hostel staff may offer to carry it for you.
The hostel is in the Micklegate area; the railway station is maybe 10-15 mins' walk away. Other tourist spots are also within walking distance. There's no lift so if you have a big bag it's a little inconvenient (although the night staff did offer his help when I arrived). The shared toilet in the dormitory is not cleaned everyday so that's also a bit uncomfortable. Other than that this hostel is a nice, safe, affordable place for single female travellers.
Great staff, location, and valuable price”
Keep standard of Safestay Hostel
Super value for money”
Spent one night here to meet a friend and this is probably the biggest bed I've slept in in any backpacker/hostel :D Room was spacious with heaters available..also wall sockets are ample in the room. Staff were very friendly too! Only downside was the room beside was too noisy and them slamming the toilet door or shouting means we can hear them quite clearly Will return again if I ever come to York again!
Overall this is a great hostel, just 5 minutes walk from the city centre and about 5 minutes from the station as well. The beds can be a bit shacky but are comfy to sleep on and have curtains for privacy. Our bathroom was ok but the toilet seat was broken so I used the communal one instead. It’s generally a clean, big hostel in a lovely historic building. I would definitely stay here when I next return to York which I absolutely loved!
Hello! Thank you very much for your review! We are pleased to hear that you had a great time with us in our lovely Georgian townhouse and enjoyed our central location! Apologies about the toilet seat, it has been changed since then! :) We hope to see you again soon! Happy and safe travels! Kind Regards, Laurine
A bit noisy but wonderful room”
The hostel is near the train station and most attractions and it is very near to groceries store. Curtain is installed in each bed to protect one's privacy so that we were not disturbed even when others light was on. There is washroom in each room and the washroom was clean and tidy as it is cleaned daily. However, as there is no hair dryer in each room, I had to walk to the third floor to use the hair dryer and it is not that user friendly (like you have to keep pressing it to make it work constantly). It should be noted that the postcode given on agoda may be wrong that when I entered the postcode on google map, I could not find the hostel though it was just a few blocks away from it.
Hello! Thank you very much for your review! We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us and liked our room and central location! In future reference, you can also borrow a hair dryer at the reception for free. We hope you had a nice time in York and we will hopefully see you again soon! Happy and safe travels! Kind Regards, Laurine
Great staff who multi task between kitchen bar & reception.Friday am Glass Bin Collection woke me up around 4am.Was woken around 2am by late night arrival of other ‘Bunk mate’!Nice atmosphere in the bar though throughout the evening as usual.Mix of Mexicans & Columbian guests...Safestay is the best value for money in York.
a good budget hostel”
merits: good location, just a few min walk to downtown. Each bed with curtains to maintain privacy. Staff are overall nice & responsive, my room power supply was broken one night but fixed in the next day. things to improve: no lift but all rooms are upstairs. front doors are often found open, not a good image in security.
Not very Clean far from railway”
the toilet not clean. the floor is not clean. its wet & humid. we stayed in the room downstairs. The room ambiance is a bit scary. No lift u have to carry ur suitcase upstairs or downstairs. the location is a bit far from railway if you need to carry ur suit case.
Hostel just located few minutes to the train station
Nice for York city but various prices”
Good location, beautiful hostel, simple breakfast for 3.5£, nice staff, please check its various prices
Best hostel ever, beautiful, have everything I need. Staff is wonderful, lent us an umbrella, arranged us into the same room while we booked a different one. 7mins walk to train station. Impressive. But don't check out late.
Really cosy and kept clean, love the privacy curtain. Fantastic location. Should REALLY do something about the bathrooms - there are too few, and they are entirely too small (and not only in proportion to the rest of this vast mansion). The water sprays everywhere, and none have windows, so they all get immediately steamy and messy.
Good place in York, especially if you have tight budget!”
I got a bed in a mixed 10-bed dorm room. They basically have everything required for a hostel. Excellent location, very close to the train station and the centre. Staff was also very helpful. They may not let you in before normal check-in time, but there's a safe room if you wanna leave your luggage. I only stayed there 1 night so couldn't say anything much. Room was warm, bed was clean and comfy. Should have a lift since I had to carry my suitcase up 3 floors (although it didn't matter much). Wifi wasn't stable all the time. Shower was quite small and water wasn't warm enough. Kitchen should be more facilitated, at least a bigger fridge, a gas burner and some cookers, not just a microwave! Free water and juice anyway. I didn't have breakfast so can't say anything, though it smelled nice in the morning. Cheap room so I won't complain much!
Reviews told me the fort boutique hostel in york was better,. I stayed in both and this hostel beats that hands down. Comfortable rooms, decent shower and good facilities made this a much more fun stay. Staff were great!!
My staying experience was horrible. A middle-aged man opened my curtain and tended to get in to my bed. I talked to the reception, and the receptionist required me to add money to change to the female room.
Can’t be beat for value and location. We were on a stag do and booked 2 x twins (bunks) 1 x double and a quad (2 x bunks) all with en suites and I have to say, it worked out £33 a man for a Saturday night in York and you just can’t beat that. Location is very central within the old city walls and loads of bars and restaurants right nearby. The on site bar is cheap and has a pool table. The staff are totally sound and very friendly. I wouldn’t stay here with my Mrs although there are en suite doubles but for a group night out in York I wouldn’t look anywhere else.
Hello! Thank you very much for your review! We are delighted to hear that you and your friends enjoyed your stay with us and liked our central location! We hope you had a good time in York and we hope to see you again very soon! Safe travels! Kind Regards, Laurine
