Might be better to select the tatami beds. The western beds had old springs. And the room has no view unlike the tatami rooms.

It is an expensive location, but it is worthy. The room is large and comfortable, the onsens are really nice, especially the outdoor one and the location is superb.

It is close to bus stop”
If you want riverside soaking experience then this is a great choice. Conveniently located besides the bus stop, though buses run so infrequently like 2 or 3 times a day. i stayed in the western room and are made with nice cedar. Bed are small, one of their staff, Honda, speaks good English. But I do not like Buffet breakfast and buffet dinner. My personal preference is more about Japanese dinner like grill fish or beef. Not spaghetti fried chicken and stuff. But they do have the more traditional stuff like tempura, salad, and fish.

Classic onsen ryokan with great staff for Kumano Kodo hiking trips.”
Apart from the distance and time required to travel to the area, this is the place to stay if one wants to have some privacy as room have their own bathroom and toilet, which is the biggest difference to the other hostels and ryokan in the area. Very friendly staff, many of them speak good english. Open air onsen is excellent, they provide bathing towel/cloth for people as it is a two pool mix bath and one can choose to bath at either pool. The only problem area for me is that there are places in the room that have dust gathering and there is always a slight Citrus smell especially when the air condition is turned on, probably from cleaning solvent, and the hair dryer have seen better days, but most old ryokan is like this to be clear, all in all a very pleasant stay.

Ideal Kawayu Onsen hotel”
Kawayu Onsen is a relatively remote but spectacular riverside village in Hongu, Wakayama Prefecture. While there are aabout a dozen smaller minshuku and ryokan, the Midoriya offers serviced hotel facilities with the only riverside rooms in the village. We stayed in the Japanese style rooms, adjacent to the river. The Midoriya offers indoor baths and outdoor pools that were popular across the whole day. Good value, very helpful staff.

Best place to stay in Kawayu!”
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Midoriya, from the moment we arrived and were welcomed by the very friendly staff. They were so helpful and genuinely pleasant during our entire stay (3 nights). We stayed in the Japanese style room and our beds were made up for us each day at 7:00pm, and disassemble each morning. The location was perfect, with a bus stop 10 meters from the Ryokan. The bus took us to the start and finish of all our walks each day. Not a lot of buses scheduled though. The room was absolutely wonderful (twin), very big with a delightful view of the river. The onsen was great. Breakfasts excellent. Once again, the staff were so friendly! This was the best hotel of our entire trip and I would definitely go back.

We were travelling by car from Koyasan to Wakayama, via Nachi Falls. This hotel was just perfect. Beautiful room, suitable for three adults. Lovely view over the river. Fabulous onsen facilities. Very good breakfast.Thoroughly recommend this hotel.

Peaceful setting in the mountains and river view”
Quiet hotel out of the town. room was quite spacious, a little bit dated though but overall still nice and looked authentic. Love how tranquil this place is in the evening, the entire area is perfect for relaxing and getting away The beautiful view outdoor bath is a bit small but not crowded anyway.

Friendly English speaking staff to cater to needs”
There was a young staff who is able to speak English and thereby was helpful with our needs, guidance and direction. Ryokan room was good size. Outdoor onsen in the open may impact some who may not feel comfortable walking with towel covering their front and not their bums for the men. But generally good food and variety

The onsen is very good; one of the memorable experience as it is just beside the public river that provides you a fresh air. The dinner and breakfast are also the best part of it. I will go back, if I have a chance.

Awesome service and river onsen experience”
2nd time staying here on our Kumano Kodo hike after 5 years. The river onsen experience is really a special experience especially after walking the whole day. Soak in the warmth during sunset and marvel at nature! The buffet dinner quality was much better than 5 years ago! Manager Honda-San went the extra mile to recommend routes and get luggage delivery arranged last minute. Many thanks to his hard work!

Friendly staff and great shuttle options”
You’ll pay a little more but this felt like luxury. We enjoyed our riverside view and pre dug onsen so we did not have to go dig our own. The staff were very sweet with our toddler and made us feel very welcome. The shuttle was the highlight as the busses don’t run regularly to Hongu or the other sights. Being able to call the reception to get picked up at the end of a long day of hiking was perfect.
