    Strategic location, very clean”
It is very close to a bus stop. Location is top! Also very clean, i like the kitchen, you can use the utensils and cook there. But there is no separate luggage room. Lugages are stored in an open empty space near the kitchen.

    Good location”
Good location near bus stop Gojozaka. Walking distance to Kiyomizu-dera and Gion Area. Convenience stores nearby to buy mineral water since hostel doesn’t provides (not sure if the tap water is drinkable). Shower room, kitchen and laundry room on 2nd floor. Nice common room and cafe on the first floor (didn’t try the food). The room isn’t soundproof, you can hear car engine from the highway—this might be a problem for light sleepers. Also, you can hear every movement in the room; someone zipping bag, open the door, etc. Other than that, if you’re not light sleepers, this hostel is nice.

good location, really nice staff and the capsules were really good. only thing that lets this place down is the complete lack of appliances and crockery or even drinks in the common area. to stay it was sparse would be an understatement, everything else was really good

    Great Stay in Kyoto”
We visited Kyoto from Osaka that day so only JR was available. I strongly suggested you to take public bus or cab from Kyoto JR station to the hostel as it was 30 minutes walking distance. Great receptionists who were kind and friendly, even helpful of finding local coffee shops around. Easy access with public bus with 230 yen per ride even late evening around 23:00.

Overall, we had a great stay in Santiago guesthouse. Here are some good and not so good points: > They let you stay on their lobby and use their bathroom even we are not yet checked in. (We came from Tokyo and arrived at 8am while check in time is 4pm, they let us use their facilities and left our luggage in the 2nd flr.) > They keep the facilities clean (bathroom, common area, kitchen). I saw the two receptionist was also cleaning the kitchen and the carpet at the same time. > Even you accidentaly left some stuffs from the bathroom, they will put it in the lavatory for you to see it. > I love the carpeted hallway. Not so good... > 20 minute walk from the nearest train station. > You can hear the traffic noise.

Nice hostel with a cafe on the ground floor. It's located near the Kiyomizudera Temple Tourist Area. Little bit far from the city center like Shincho, Gion, etc. It's also quite far from Kyoto station. But you can easily use the local bus to get there (approx 10 mins).

Budget place in tourist attractions. ”
Guesthouse is clean, spacious public area for everyone. Location is not so bad as is at the Higashi-Gojo intersection, across the road is pathway to Kiyomizu dera temple. A short walk to Gojozaga bus station, but a bit far(750 m) from the nearest convenient store(100¥ Lawson shop,7-11)& Kiyomizu Gojo Hankyu station.Guesthouse also provides Public kitchen ( oven, microwave ,other kitchenwares )to cook.

    Very good”
It was ok for price. Showers are next to the kitchen area. The kitchen lacks basic tools like cutlery, only two spoons available. The big issue I found was the humidity in room #4. Blankets felt damp and you could feel general dampness around.

A clean hostel with a great staff.”
The staff here was incredibly friendly and helpful! When I checked in the staff member at reception recommended a lot of great spots to check out around Kyoto. The hostel is connected to a really nice cafe. The entire hostel was very clean and tidy. It is a little bit far from Kyoto Station, but other than that, everything was perfect.

    Best I’ve had (per cost)”
Best hostel per budget so far I’ve been to in Japan. You get fridges to store food, kitchen to cook, coin laundry and locker to store small valuables. Downstairs is a cafe where you can eat all day, Nepali chicken curry is very good. Note that you make your own bed. For access, take Keihan train to Kiyomizu-Gojo station and walk here, or JR train to Kyoto station and take the bus 86, 100 202, 207 to Gojozaka bus stop. The hostel is near Gion area and the entrance pathway to Kiyomizu temple. Other attractions are easily reached by bus and I suggest buying 600 yen one day bus pass from the hostel staff if you will ride the bus at least three times in one day, except for Fushimi Inari which is much easier to get to by train. For food, head left towards Gion direction for about 300 metres, there’s a 24 hr Fresco supermarket which sells much cheaper stuff than convenient stores.

Nice place a short distance from the main "downtown"”
Only a short bus or a 20~30min walk from the downtown (and less to Gion), and right by one of the famous tourist temples. They are Japanese-style bunk/capsule beds, so lots of privacy. Clean place, friendly staff, good toilet/shower facilities, nice common room/kitchen. Would stay again.

    Good choice for lower budget”
The room was not very clean and quiet, and it seemed that some other travelers got drunk and threw up in the toilet. For the room, It would be better to choose the lower bunk to avoid the noise and strong wind from the air conditioner.

They are just greedy hostel owners”
I couldn’t come on the day I booked the room, because my bus got canceled due to the typhoon coming. Called them and asked if they could change my booking dates, from 1st-5th to 2nd-6th, they gave very unclear answer. And the next day I came, they told me my booking was already fully paid so i still got charged for the first day that I didn’t stay, and even asked for more money for a new type of tax that never got mentioned on the booking. Well greedy business people never care if there is an earthquake or typhoon or whatsoever if you already pay, so my best advice is you shouldn’t choose to pay through Agoda, but pay at the hotel, so you don’t get charged if you can’t come. They use volunteers as room cleaners, since they don’t wanna pay for any staff. The room is smelly, even though the volunteers try to keep it clean, but 12 beds in one narrow room would always make smelly room.

    Good for short stay”
Beds were cozy. Everything was clean. No one was really using the common space while I was there (it's just some low tables on a hard floor) so it's not super cozy. It's a late check in (4pm) and Agoda is a little misleading. Breakfast is not included in every booking. At the cafe it's 500yen so if you're planning on eating there anyway you might save a bit by booking that room option.
