The Burmese family which ran Scindia guest house were friendly, honest and helped organise our stay in Varanasi with out the need for hawkers and over pricing. Make sure you walk the ghatts to get to Scindia or get a rik shaw guide, otherwise you will never find it.

Overall it was great. Helpful tips from staff. Organised a seamless transfer from guest house to train station. Only downfall was that wifi was unreliable.

A guest house which does not have the facilities of a regular hotel.”
The guest being located near the river bank has a serious access problem. Room rents are exorbitant compared to the facilities. The toilet is not equipped with a commode shower, hand shower, proper towel and proper drainage. Rooms are small without a cupboard or even hangers to hang your clothes; poor lighting without a bed lamp;TV with cable connection that does not facilitate English news, sports or any Bengali channel. Room though has a good Wi-Fi internet connection. The front balcony provides a good view of the river is furnished with a couple of plastic chairs. The complementary breakfast is is Toast Butter with an Omlette every day. Only veg food for lunch and dinner which is good.

    Great centrally located budget option”
    Location, helpful/friendly staff, good food
For the price, Scindhia guest house is a great option. Perfect location next to the river, helpful staff, and good clean food at the restaurant. You can step out the back door of the hotel and down to the river, for a boat ride or a walk along the ghats. I considered staying farther away from the river, and am glad I didn't, as it was nice to be able to explore the river area at my leisure. When staying at a guest house, you have to keep in mind that you are only paying ~$30 for a room, and you can't expect the same things you would find at an international hotel that costs four times or more in the Cantonment area. Keep that in mind and staying at a guest house is a great way to see the old city area in Varanasi.

    Incredible location.
If you want to be in the thick of the action, stay at this guesthouse. The staff, especially the manager are great. Only warning - if you have any lung issues the Burning Ghat is a constant presence and you will not be able to get out of the smoke.

Incredible location right in the heart of the magical ghats. The family took very good care of us. Kush is a thoughtful and sweet host. The food is very good - especially dinner. Some of the best home-cooked food we had in India.

    Very good”
Good location, little north of the center of the main ghat but if you‘re into the burning ghats it probably is perfect as it is just a 3 minute walk to the main burning ghat of varanasi (beware of scams, and do not take pics of the burning ghat - consider this as someone unrelated coming to your mothers funeral and taking pics - inappropriate!). The guest house has great overviews of the river and offers all you can think of. However: the „old city tour“ with an old friend of the house mainly contained „look at this - how old!!“ and included a visit at a friends silk seller where we firmly had to say „NO!“ we don‘t want to buy. (After all, „up-tourism“ seems the better choice for a guided walk, albeit more expensive). Matresses are thin but considerate for the price. Restaurant means someone will cook for you, food is good although don‘t expect culinary highlights.

    24 hours in Varanasi”
While basic, the accommodation was in a traditional style dwelling and was very clean. The owner was terrific...he had good English and was able to organise his boatman to take us out in the evening and morning at very short notice. Take earplugs...Varanasi is "on" 24 hours a day, whether it be the local monkeys running over the tin roof or the prayers and ceremonies at the burning ghat just next door. We were only in Varanasi overnight and for part of the following day. While that was enough, make sure you take time to walk through the town near the ghats...it's a slice of a very different life...plus see the town behind the river, there's always a lot going on!

The view is spectacular as it is right on the Ganges. Staff is quite friendly, can arrange boat ride”
Very difficult to find without a guide. Smoke from burning ghat was sometimes a problem. The were many bugs in my room at night. However, the experience of being so close to the river was overwhelming. Easy to walk along the river to see the major sights. Price for the room was cheap. Price for tours, fairly reasonable for India.

    Not what was advertised”
Very basic room. AC old did work but was noisy. No AC when power cuts. No roof terrace or restaurant with a view. Entrance way to the guest house was very dirty, slippery, unsafe. Part of the building was in a demolished state. Mineral water was expensive at 35 rupees. No auro rickshaw can reach the guest house, on foot only for about one km. Menu in downstairs restaurant limited but OK. Breakfast stingy. No fruit juice , curds or cereal. Only eggs and toast. Our rowing boat on the Ganges was very enjoyable and the best thing about this place.

Located directly on Scindia ghat this well run hotel occupies a superb location convenient to all the activity along the River. You can see the burning Ghats from your balcony. The very friendly owner/manager personally attends to each and every quest to make your stay in Varanasi a pleasure. He is both knowledgeable and helpful and can arrange to all your needs. The all veg restaurant will do for breakfast. but the Brown Bread Bake nearby is by far the best eating option in town. Best room are Deluxe with balcony...watch out for the monkeys!

it was my 3rd visit to India, during about 10 years, there is a fewer and fewer such places where you are really warmly welcome, without additional conditions or expectations with nice chating and discussions about India. Location. Views. Peaceful. Clean. Happy energetic and helpful Kushagra.
This was my third visit. First as couple, second with friends and third as couple with British, Swiss, Polish friends. Everyone loved it each time. The sunken temple is just in front of the window. The Manikarnika ghat is close enough to reach in one minutes walk. Dolphin restaurant is 5 minutes and the Dashashwamedha ghat 7 minutes. You feel like in one of those homes in the narrow streets. You actually walk those streets for 15 minutes to reach from the cab drop off.(There are porters). The other side of the guest house exits directly to the ghats. I have stayed at other well known ghat guest houses before Ifound Scindhia house. Now this is the first choice each time.

Great service. With notice the can handle any of your needs. Great view of the river as you eat home cooked food.
At first I was wondering if it would be a problem having to walk 10 minutes to the hotel. That actually became part of the appeal. From there you could either hire a boat to get around or ask the hotel to arrange a cab where the driver would come and walk you to and from the cab. The room was comfortable and the food was good. It's a great location on the river. I would go back! Jock
